Graham Clark passed away in July 2023. Opera magazine noted as part of its obituary: "At the age of 33 Graham left a good career in sports education to try his hand at professional singing. Briefly, the two jobs overlapped. In 1975, after auditioning for Richard Bonynge, he was immediately hired by him to sing bits of Verdi with Joan Sutherland in a televised fundraising gala at Covent Garden, the television commentator Humphrey Burton describing the ‘fairy-tale debut of this marvellous tenor, who still works for the Sports Council in Reading’.
Joan Sutherland is the Queen of High D's to me. Good God!!! This is one of her two or three best high notes. Not high and shrill but big and full. So many overtones!!!!!!!!! Enormous like those early Callas high notes when she was heavy. I am so happy to find this as all I knew was an excerpt and the sound was not so good. Sutherland looks very good here.
I came here for Joan Sutherland, who I saw many times in New York. But I also noticed the concertmaster, Erich Gruenberg, who himself had a fascinating biography. Born in Australia, studied in Israel, became a legendary violinist in several great orchestras, played for the Beatles Sgt Peppers album, and died in 2020 at age 95.
Elkins is also stunning in this concert. Much under-rated in Australia in her day.
Wut
Bravo Theo N! Along with Yvonne Minton and Lauris Elms (who was more at the Alto end), Elkins is one of the greatest mezzo's that Australia has thus far produced, while the also now late Heather Begg was also an international league singer (along with Clifford Grant) who spent much (if not most) of her latter career in Australia further to her having originally been from NZ...That said, Graham Clark, who later went on to sing Wagner spieltenor roles is an absolute knockout here!
Virtuosity defined. And another great example of what a generous and warm icon she was.
Her final note at about 13:25 ist just q spectacle of it's own.
A wall of sound.
And how the other singer is looking at Sutherland like 'YES BITCH THATS MY GIRL' in full support of her colleague.
omg. joan is stunning in this concert.
Her absolute peak of her career, in my opinion, early 1975...
Everything from around this time is stunning, and any role she recorded around this time, can hardly be beat by any other time in her career. Particularly her 1975 Houson Texas Lucrezia Borgia. She sound unlike I've ever heard...
I agree. This was her vocal peak in both dramatic and virtuoso qualities.
The Nella Pace portion of this concert is, I think, my most played UA-cam clip over the years. The combo of the music, melody, singing (Oh my God, the singing!-unbelievably sure, strong, and voluptuous sounds), warms and reassures me. And... SO glamorous and serenely beautiful.X
What a glorious evening!! Great singing all round and Maestro Bonynge in complete control of the proceedings. Elkins, Begg, all the men, and the Jewel in the Crown, Joan Sutherland.
The lovely and talented Dame Joan Sutherland.
38:32 Dame Joan clearly sings 2 feet above a background blurred noise :D
In some way it is a bizarre thing to see her bow to Prince Charles. But also captivating to see her flow of movement, where she only rests briefly in the bow and then straightens up again to be taller than him and having much more personal radiance and dignity. I always am amazed by this kind of people. In a way they indeed float above the rest. Like the elves of Tolkien lol.
Schnee von Gestern Yes. He was representing his mother, the Queen of Australia ... which is also a bizarre thing in this day and age. ;)

Ah! La Stupenda!!!!
Thank you so much for this winderfull concert with the best and most beautiful voice of the 20th century!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, Margreta Elkins, who usually sang mezzosoprano and contralto parts, singing a soprano part! Impressive! Thanks for sharing.
Oh goodness me!! Thank you so very much for uploading this delightful recording. I remember when we first knew it was going to be released on vinyl. The excitement that charged the air in our home. We had no idea what was going to be sung or actually on the Decca recording. I sill have the vinyl. Bravi to all! Thank you MrQwerty88.

maravilloso todo............................
Even though Verdi didn't write the soprano's final high note, after hearing Sutherland sing it one wishes all other sopranos did as well.
This is not Verdi
@@Tkimba2 Ah...the final aria is from Rigoletto. By Verdi.
@@Eiswirth1 you're right
This opera is "Maria Stuarda," one of the three Donizetti Tudor queens operas: Ana Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux. NOT Verdi.
@@jonathanbriggs3234 No, this opera is NOT Maria Stuarda it's Verdi's Rigoletto. You didn't watch this until the end. the quartet starts at the 38.08-minute mark. See what you missed by not watching this to the end?
siempre son bellas las voces que cantan con sutherland...............pero la voz de sutherland..........es mas que bella....................es de otro mundo.....................

I'm looking for armando sierra tenor videos if anyone knows please let me know
magnificas ambas
Yuck.
Which?
Sutherland. No vowels sounds. Just making noise. Her sound is ugly.
No vowels sounds? So, to your ear, she is only singing consonants? Please go away, you're an imbecile.
So you are so dumb that you think we can only make vowels sounds or consonants? ROFL! I mean, please tell me you can think better than that. And for your information, SHE complained about her lack of vowels HERSELF and blamed her husband. You jackass.
Sutherland.
