Fool's Gold is called like that because only a fool would think it looks like real gold.

Pyrite is an awesome indicator and replacement mineral for organic material in fossils. As shells/bones/plant material breaks down, it seperates into its base minerals - Iron and Phosphate. If conditions are right, the Iron turns into Iron Sulphides (Pyrite) that can create golden coloured concretions and fossils, most famously the pyritized ammonites from germany and the uk. Pyrite as a lithogenic mineral is found associated with Nephrite and Serpentinite deposits, as these rocks started life as massive deposits of Gabbro and Dunite (Iron rich mantle rocks) that were altered via heat and fault action.

Few "pure" metals can be used in jewelry. Platinum is an exception.
All others tend to be to soft, corrode/tarnish or are too difficult to cast into the intricate shapes desired.
Gold can be alloyed into white, rose and green (off-white).

How can people be fooled by that? If I were to see fools gold in nature, I would think: "Da heck is this stuff? It looks golden, but in a metallic-already-refined golden way"
Normal gold: "Yellow-ish ... Metall ... is that gold?"

Crash Kojote when discovered in veins in caves, the sight difference is slightly harder to tell apart. When mining for Gold or just exploring, many unfamiliar viewers might see riches, only to be fooled.

Also natural gold usually contains Lead which makes it much less yellow.

That’s pure pyrite, pyrite found in nature looks closer to gold than you think, look up pyrite inclusions in lapis lazuli it looks like gold surprisingly.

@@quinnsterd4764 I was going to comment this... The Iron Pyrite she used was low in Sulphur Inclusions... Maybe if looking for Gold doing panning where Tenths of Grams and Hundredths of Ounces mattered... Then Pyrite with High Sulphur Inclusions were easily mistaken for gold dust.

Pyrite has a clear crytal-like structure, with clean, planar faces. Gold, as a metal, doesn't have that.
I like Silver or Titanium best for jewelry; I prefer the austere look they provide to Gold's more remarkable yellow.

Being a very pale person with cool undertones I look way better with silver jewelry, the only yellow gold piece I hold dear is a pendent with real gold flakes my sister got me from Alaska. Aside from that I'm very partial to the coloration of white gold
But personally I really like the look of pyrite, its has that brassy metallic gold color, that again would work with skin tone, plus i actually have my own sizable chunk from cavern that you can visit around where i live.

Do you mean what alloy is better for jewelry?
For daily use 18kt is better since the extra alloys make the piece harder. Like what is said in the video gold is very soft. For bullion purposes 24kt is better since pure gold is preferred in the growing asian gold market. 22kt is good as well.

999% silver tarnishes but cleaner stronger than gold & Silver is antivirus/bacterial . Silver is brighter than any metal. Under shade & side to side silver
    Pops up brighter. ( Gold: jewelry/electronic/money. ( silver: jewelry/electronic/money/medical/more industrial than gold . 😎 ka-shaww.

They used a pyrite specimen with too little sulphur in real life the difference is less obvious because of sulphur content, chalcopyrite is even harder because it can be malleable like gold.

I’m a chemist, not a gemologist, and I still know better. I was also triggered when you said you’d mix pure gold with an alloy and started listing off elements to turn gold /into an alloy/. I mean, unless to gemologists copper, nickel and platinum are somehow already alloys - however what I assume you meant was “You’d mix pure gold with these elements to make an alloy”.

You forgot to mention that gold is soft and can easily be molded while fools gold has harder surface and is not as soft. it flakes off rather than molding to the pressure from scraping with a nail. If it.is harder than the nail chances are it is fools gold. And color and even the appearance if it is formed in reflecting mirror patterns it is probably.fools gold.I want to be more than a mine geologist I find lots of fools gold but there are more than just one type of fools gold seems like one has iron in it another is part copper and another type cant remember still can't find real gold In the blue grey stone. In our rock we have what I think is calcium bicarbonate, dull amethyst not see through, and a pink crystal powder rock Washington rock quarries in Kapowsin but in our other pit king creek wa rock we have agate' s and jasper
