Mount Pleasant Hike - Camping at the Summit - Virginia Sunset / Sunrise

  • A 7.2 mile George Washington National Forest hike to some pretty spectacular views with 2 summits for viewing. Both the east and west summits are equally beautiful. 5 camping spots at the top, although I preferred the east side to pitch my tent inside the grove of mountain laurels. Incredible mountain to catch a sunrise or sunset. But be warned the temps vary greatly at the summit than in the valley below and when the winds get high up there the temps drop fast!
    Questions about this hike or the camping? Just let me know, I'm always happy to help.

      I didn't have my winter gear for this trip. It wasn't suppose to get that cold either. I've had to night hike out before, but glad I didn't have to for this one. I didn't get a lot of sleep from all the shivering, but man is it gorgeous up there from both of those views. I need to go back!

    Yesss! I love the Mount Pleasant area. Hands down one of my favorite areas anywhere in Virginia. I've lost count of how many times I've hiked that area. Great that you made it out there and camped at the summit. There are actually so many better camp sites spread out through the area but the summit can't be beat for the views. Last time I was up there I squeezed my tent right into that spot you showed at 5:10 mark. It was perfect. That's a bit unusual to see the snakes on a cold day but they were probably looking for any sun they could find to warm a bit. That was a beautiful sunset you got even with the cold. Glad you survived the cold night. It's hard to predict temperatures up in the mountains. They always fluctuate and the mountain creates its only microclimate up there. Remember to always subtract 3 to 5 degrees for every 1000 feet of elevation gain. Most of the forecasts will be for a town down in a valley, so if you're camping high up, you can adjust the prediction depending on the elevation difference between where you'll be versus the elevation of the town used for forecast. The sunrise was beautiful, again even with the clouds. Those water crossings are normally not that bad. Creeks looked like they were up a little more than normal. Sadly the parking area is pretty small and can't handle the volume of traffic that is sometimes up there. This is another spot that is best on a weekday if possible. If you ever get a chance to hike the Hotel Trail, it has that name for a reason...great place to camp! Glad you enjoyed your visit to Mount Pleasant. I enjoyed your video!

      Hey Smell N Roses appreciate the watch! Thanks a bunch! One of my fav spots for a sunset & sunrise for sure. Believe me, I won't be going through another night of suffering like I did that night on top of that mountain. I now have a 20 degree down sleeping bag, some warmer base layers, gloves, and a couple of thicker puffy jackets to choose from etc. I am not doing any backpacking trips until the night time lows are 40 degrees or warmer. I will just settle for day hikes now. I learned a big lesson for this trip. I will def check out the Hotel Trail - sounds interesting.

    Beautiful views- sunset and sunrise! Great job going by yourself and making it through such a cold night! Good thing you could keep your feet dry, that wouldn’t be fun to have wet feet or wet shoes at 30 degrees. Thanks for sharing a bit of Virginia with us - new friend returning the support from Washington State! 🌲🌲 🥾🥾 Happy Hiking!

    I loved the real moody skies, real drama there.. Amazing views but not that keen on the view of that snake.......Looked quite a sheltered spot to camp and a nice hot apple cider to watch that awesome sunrise. Sounded dam chilly there mind but good to hear/see you made it through the night, cheers Alan

      Your my second European viewer that said that, lol They are just a part of nature over here in the US. They are all around us all the time. Those were only harmless nonvenomous garter snakes. The ones we have to watch out for in the mountains are Rattlesnakes and Copperheads. They are both venomous and typically like to sun out on rocks. Thanks for your continued support of my channel my friend.

    What a nice winter camp-out! I don't know if I want a snake this close to my camp! 😁 You're so right about watching a sunrise or a sunset. You can never put that on camera to do it real justice! 😁 Nice one! ATB, Kaat

    • @RVAHikerGirl
      @RVAHikerGirl  3 роки тому +3

      Thats just a harmless little garter snake, non venomous. They go to their dens at night to try to stay warm since they are cold blooded. They move super slow in these colder temps. They are all around us no matter where you go including the venomous ones that we have in my area rattle snakes and copperheads. Its their home and I am an just outsider visiting. Snakes are afraid of humans and they leave you alone unless you step on one or reach down in the leaves which is when most people get bit.

    • @StepsbyKaatje
      @StepsbyKaatje 3 роки тому +1

      @@RVAHikerGirl Ok, we Europeans are spoiled! We hardly have any dangerous animals out! Humans probably are the most dangerous onces! 😁

    • @RVAHikerGirl
      @RVAHikerGirl  3 роки тому +2

      @@StepsbyKaatje We have black bears and bobcats too. (Its rare to see bobcats but not rare to see bears and their babies - mama bears are super protective over their cubs) You really have to scan the trail in the mountains for snakes as your hiking during the warm months. The rattlers are usually sunning out on rocks but they also cross the trails in nonrocky sections as well.

Researching now on which one I am going to get. I don't like being confided in a mummy bag, but I think thats what I am going to end up getting.

    Curious, do you also carry bear spray??

    • @RVAHikerGirl
      @RVAHikerGirl  3 роки тому +3

      Hey Sylvia! No I don’t. Bear spray is only good if a bear is within 30ft of you. And you have to make sure the wind isn’t blowing towards you so you don’t spray yourself. Most people carry bear spray out west in Grizzly country. We just have black bears here in VA and they just run off or you make a lot of noise to scare them away.
