I was with a "book hangover" for about 4 years, but when I saw yoongi was reading this book, I liked the sinopsis, started reading it, loved it, finished it, and now i'm reading another one (confessions of a mask) AND in other language which is english, that I thought I wasn't ready yet to read novels in this language, but turns out I'm doing great at it and I loved your review, agreed with all of your opinios about the book :)
I believe the character of Dora was an important one because after meeting her yunjae had that piercing pain in his chest which was just a crush and this developed into him feeling and at thend finally crying in front of his mother That was a heartfelt moment
"I never thought about how language limits emotion" a very astute note, I really like this push-and-pull the story seems to elicit based on your review. I also remember watching Matthew's review too, which was equally compelling and persuasive. I'll have to keep this one in mind, also interesting to hear of how it feels maybe a tinge different from other South Korean authors you've read like Han Kang (who I love!) so hopefully I also enjoy Almond, I'll be curious to observe its storytelling mechanics too since your mention of it being a debut, debuts are always a wild card!
I didn't mention this because it slipped my mind at the time, but it is also a quick read. The chapters are really short so it has a really good momentum to it. I'm definitely excited to see what other people think of this one!
Great review of what sounds like a unique reading experience. I wonder when you talk about language and emotions how the Korean language and the English language might also play into this. It really brings up some interesting food for thought. Thanks for the recommendation and giving this book some attention.
I definitely thought about that too! I think the translator did an excellent job of conveying the difficulty of capturing emotion with language, but it would be really interesting to see how much of the text deviates from the original. If only I read Korean!
It is very thought-provoking, but it was also extremely readable! Chapters were only about 2-3 pages, and it read very quickly. I felt like I needed to slow myself down so I could think about it as much as I felt like I should. Highly recommend!
You might be looking at the paperback edition? The hardcover came out earlier this year and the paperback will be released next year. However, the hardcover also may be out of stock if it wasn't reprinted due to lack of consumer demand
this was so beautiful... i finished it in 3 days and even when i wasn't reading it, my mind was always on the characters in almond
They are definitely unforgettable characters. There are scenes that will stay with me for a long time.
I have finished it in two days most favorite book so far 😍🥰

This sounds like a really powerful and unique novel. It was on my radar because of Monica Kim but you've definitely piqued my interest even further!
Thank you! I'd definitely be interested in hearing more perspectives on this one :)

Sounds really interesting. Sounds super philosophical as well.
