  • The Verges Dance of Death forms part of the Procession of Verges, which is held on Maundy Thursday. It is a representation of medieval origin with ancestral and unique characteristics. The first documentary reference dates back to 1666.
Five skeletons perform the dance, emerging to the repetitive and sober rhythm of a drum, with a series of small jumps that modify their posture as they advance. The objects they carry are a scythe, a flag that indicates that time is short, a dish full of ashes and a clock without hands, symbols that remind us of the unavoidable fate that sooner or later awaits us.
At the end of the Procession, the Dance of Death continues to the church square, where they take a bow that concludes the Procession of Maundy Thursday.
The Government of Catalonia declared the Procession of Verges a Heritage Festival of National Interest on 23 November 2010.
This video was produced by the Department of Culture, with the support of Verges City Council and the Procession of Verges.
