  • On February 20, 1962, Astronaut John H. Glenn Jr. became the first American to orbit the Earth. After two sub-orbital hops made by Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom, Glenn rode atop the far more powerful Atlas booster during a 4-1/2 hour mission during which he made three orbits of the Earth.
    Despite several technical issues throughout the flight, Mercury-Atlas 6 (known better by the callsign Friendship 7) was a resounding success and massive leap forward in the American space program.

    What blows my mind is this was less than 17 years after the end of WW2 and less than 100 years after the end of the American civil War.

    I lived near Cape Canaveral as a young boy and was fortunate to see the early launches in person. Later I worked at Kennedy Space Center and got to meet many of the original Astronauts. These were men with nerves of steel and adventurous spirits. You might say they were adrenalin junkies. But they were also demanding and expected the best efforts from the support crew of which I was proud to be one.

    The small particles that John Glenn described starting at 3:30 (also called "fireflies"), turned out to be ice crystals from his spacecraft.

    I recall the actual event from my childhood days, which was viewed through grainy TV footage back then. This excellent animation brings it to life again and reflects the bravery of John Glenn and his pioneering colleagues.

    Your animations bring the history of space exploration alive in a way other documentaries cannot achieve. This production of John Glenn's Friendship 7 flight is another valuable contribution to our understanding of what early astronauts experienced. Thank you for taking us along for a ride in a Mercury capsule! Superb!

    It is clear that you put a great deal of hard work into making this production. I was particularly glad to see that you correctly blew off the protective thruster caps from the retro pack, as nearly everyone get it wrong and shows thruster flames with the caps still on. Well done!

    Could it have been ice particles he was seeing? It occurred just as the capsule was coming into the sunlight. The heat from the sunlight could have loosened up any accumulations stuck to a vent or something.

    • @CbassProductions
      @CbassProductions  Рік тому

      It was later determined that the "fireflies" was condensation that came from the life support system and froze to the side of capsule during the night. They came loose and were lit up in the sunrise.

    • @aerostorm_
      @aerostorm_ Рік тому

      Also the affect is somewhat similar to the "twilight effect" seen during launches where when the booster reaches an altitude where it reaches sunlight again. The exhaust illuminates and shines brilliantly from the perspective of the ground.
      The sunlight is being scattered by the exhaust, and here from what condensation was falling away from the capsule during the orbital sunrise.

    Wasn't john supposed to be humming battle hymn of the Republic as he was a big fire ball like ed Harris did ??? Im so used to the movie. Still a great viddie and he was such a great brave man who was always so humble about his accomplishments not a loud blowhard hero like some fighter pilots would.

      @CbassProductions  Рік тому +1

      Ice particles originating from the environmental control system breaking off and being lit up by the rising sun. Scott Carpenter, who flew after Glenn, basically made it his personal mission to definitively find out what the "fireflies" were.

    I've noticed in virtually interview and documentary, Glenn maintains that he was never informed about the landing bag deploy indicator,... yet we clearly hear them informing him during the re-entry procedure. Has he simply forgotten this, or does he purposefully exaggerate the story for the sake of a story?

    • @CbassProductions
      @CbassProductions  10 місяців тому +2

      He was more upset he wasn’t informed of the bag deploy indicator when it actually happened, rather than at the last possible moment. The indicator went off at the start of the second orbit, but Glenn wasn’t even clued in to anything being wrong until near the end of the third orbit. And once he was told something was off-nominal, he wasn’t told exactly what until several minutes later.

      Even if there was nothing he could have done about it, as a test pilot he still wanted to have as up-to-date information about his spacecraft as possible, even if just for situational awareness. Being kept in the dark robbed him of that.
