The best smallmouth bait would be a 12 inch version of this with a 2 inch minnow lure tied 6 inches in front of it. They are so competitive it would slay them...
I ran across the video where you said something like, "there is tupalo wood, but we don't need that". And now I've found the video where you proclaimed it to be the best. Digging throught the historic archives has been a journey.
Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.
You have inspired me so much. I went through some very rough times at home and whenever I got really sad or didn’t want to be living anymore I would turn on your videos and they just made me think that when I get out of college there was something I love out there. Thank you I want to be able to make some cool lures and send them to you, if you still have your channel. Be ready in a few years.
When the weather warms up, Nate needs to get that boy on some bluegill with a bobber!!! Can’t start them too young! Even if he doesn’t film it, take the family bluegill fishing Nate!
This is my favorite lure you have made so far. It really shows the dedication you have toward your art. Good job and thank you for sharing your passion with us...
Saw a guy, walking stick maker, dropping wood like that, comparing green and seasoned wood. Here you can hear the tupelo, higher pitch, is more dense than the balsa.
Such a lucky man. Beautiful wife, cute and charming kiddo, an amazing talent, and his job literally revolves around fishing, the sport and hobby I love. I envy your setup in this world good sir. Please keep up the amazing videos and thank you for letting us see such wonderful and creative content!
Seeing your kid getting bigger is nuts. Something my father told me that I will keep with me forever and felt I'd pass along. "Your kid is going to disappoint you at times in your life, wether it be in big or small ways. And it's ok. That's life. You will laugh with them about it when they have screw ups of their own. It makes the proud moments something you'll remember till the day you die" Also smoking lure!
Nice detailed swim bait and nice action. Great working bait you will gave to test it out on the water and see if you can get a nice small mouth bass.. Great work as always . and you do great video work to. You can tell you take pride in your work . i think you are the best on the internet.
Hey Marling I've been a huge fan of the channel and even started making my own lures. I was wondering if you would be interested if I sent one or two and you did a video rating them.
Nate dude u got no idea how much this helped me. Was literally suicidal almost fucked up like wow even 4me that's a colossal F'up. You're younger than I but you're honestly one of my heroes. Role model @very least. Got my son back after6 of the hardest yrs of life. Point blank period. Lost dad @4, mom @12... just Ryan on my own for last 30some odd years, f' hell I don't honestly know my own age. 40somethings all I know. This video esp seeing son with dad saved a life. Nate I don't bullshit. You saved a life tonight. My deepest thanks and thought he will never know, I'm certain Kayeden McLain, my 7yo son, would .....hard to see thru tears....thank you more than the biggest thanks in entire history of appreciation Thank you sir, thank youthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyourhankyou. Thank you mr nate marling. You're tonight at least a godsend, lifesaving, master fucking baiter and I, sir, appreciate you and have since the first video in which you spoke and have only gotten greater with each and every video but ... don't think this one,for me, wll ever EVER BE TOpped. Thanks nate
"FUN FACTS" ...... is BACK !!! Digged the way Fun Facts rolled over the building sequence !!!! New 'T-Shirt' .................. discount advertising !!!! Great Bait !!!!
One of your most beautiful to date! Can`t wait to see your fishing rods come to life. I`m sure there will be a process but will be worth it! I fish a lot up here in Canada and it is so relaxing to watch you create your baits. Thanks for the chuckles to.
That is amazing. Think it's my favourite hard lure you've shown us. Everything about it is perfect. Nice to see the family too - looks like you're living the dream Nate.
I’ve known it for years, but your carving work is absolutely beautiful. It comes out extremely well on this particular project. Keep doing what you love!
That explains the red eye that the smallmouth bass have: Because it is in the sunfish family. How odd. Really love the intricacies of this lure. Reminds me of the baby smallmouth I used to catch in Colorado.
I am new to the channel and catching up on the back log, just have to say I am absolutely addicted!!!!! Small Mouth are by far my favorite fish to catch and have to say this lure is an absolute work of art!!!
Definitely one of my favorite baits you’ve done so far. Have really enjoyed watching your boy grow up man, there’s nothing better. Just spent weeks teaching my 8yr old to fish, just hanging out, catching fish and teaching him shit.... now I’m back in the god forsaken snow and I want to do more of it. The best years are yet to come man. Cheers
I agree, creek smallmouthing is the BEST! I still remember the first one I ever caught. A yellow/gold one in 1987. And yeah, it was about the same size as your bait...
You've inspired me to start making baits! I got back from a deployment and now I can start! I was thinking about bait making the whole time. I'm collecting tools and building a work bench! Can't wait!
You’re making your page so perfectly. I’ve been following your page for a while now, and you’re keeping me interested. I love it marlin bates, don’t stop.
Smallmouth have turned into my favorite fish to catch as well, and until a week ago, I'd never caught one before. I found a creek that has a bunch of little ones (and some not so little ones), they make ultralight fishing even more fun.
With all the craziness and everything going on right now it was nice to see a simple, straight forward build with a beautiful outcome. Great vid marling!
I follow you from France. your work is amazing !!! the details, the painting . the satisfaction when you have to catch a fish with your creations !! really wonderful work 🔥🤜🏼🤛🏼🔥
Thank you for going back and making lures I've learned a lot about lure making from you thank you and if you are ever in Maine and you want to do some fishing hit me up I have some nice fishing holes around me and keep up the good work
This is, without a doubt, the best produced fishing video I've yet to see. And I'm pretty darn fussy in the video production category. The crafting of the bait, as you noted, was indeed fabulous. But the montage of the techniques used in crafting it, over the VO of the Wiki-read, was perfect. Add the family touches and the usual wry humor, this thing was da bomb!!! Made my Monday, for sure!! And re the rod build possibility, I have the predictive response of... Time to add the next creative skill set. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Am I the only one who feels really inspired to make stuff after watching these videos 😂
not at,all not at all....
Every video!!!
Inspires me to edit my videos. Funny, informative and gets the creative juices flowing.
i wanna make a tiny wooden fish too
I’m guilty of this
I have never been able to watch the full video, but now, I've figured out you are very detailed. I am very detailed.I really like the bass.❤❤
The best smallmouth bait would be a 12 inch version of this with a 2 inch minnow lure tied 6 inches in front of it. They are so competitive it would slay them...

If you made a shirt that says “smallmouth Sun bass” with a really small smallmouth under it... I’d buy it
Me too 🤣
And a gold speckled turd shirt 🤣🤣
Me to
Just a big a$$ pic of that bait and
“Smallmouth Sun Bass” right below it.
I’d buy that.
You have inspired me so much. I went through some very rough times at home and whenever I got really sad or didn’t want to be living anymore I would turn on your videos and they just made me think that when I get out of college there was something I love out there. your son saying “dada” then coming around the corner should be the intro clip to “the best of marling baits 2021”
That's an idea🤘😂
When the weather warms up, Nate needs to get that boy on some bluegill with a bobber!!!
Can’t start them too young!
Even if he doesn’t film it, take the family bluegill fishing Nate!
Time stamp
Just very surprised that he didn't call him daddy. My teenage cousin calls her dad daddy. Not the 18+ way
This is my favorite lure you have made so far. It really shows the dedication you have toward your art. Good job and thank you for sharing your passion with us...
The B roll of your son was so wholesome, and I enjoy how interested he is in what pops is up to.
He's back! Hope everything is going good with the family. How about a line through top water frog with twister legs? Popper mouth.
THAT WOULD BE AWSOME
LOL
Love your baits. Love watching you carve em too. The calmness is a therapy.
We need a ghost fish that glows in the dark and looks all spooky n such.
A ghost carp, you can get ghost mirror carp aswell as common carp. They look awesome when swimming near surface
Halloween special time bois
Interesting I wouldn’t have guessed this lure would come next I would totally buy
"That's probably not going in the video." That definitely went in the video...
Makes me wonder how much of that stuff we don't see
Saw a guy, walking stick maker, dropping wood like that, comparing green and seasoned wood. Here you can hear the tupelo, higher pitch, is more dense than the balsa.
@@douglasfur3808 it sounded so bright, you'd have thought the wood cracked.
how do you know
I'm so glad I found your videos, been watching for 3 years now and I still look look forward to every post.
Last time I was this early she said we should just be friends
RIP
depression maximus
Omg marling baits has a good sense of humor
Such a lucky man. Beautiful wife, cute and charming kiddo, an amazing talent, and his job literally revolves around fishing, the sport and hobby I love. I envy your setup in this world good sir. Please keep up the amazing videos and thank you for letting us see such wonderful and creative content!
Rod building is very addictive, equally as enjoyable to. Nothing like catching them on a rod you built with a lure you made lol.
We need an all wood baitcaster reel next to pair with the spinner haha
sassybass01, and if this keeps up, he'll be raising his own fish next.
It makes the proud moments something you'll remember till the day you die"
Also smoking lure!
LOVE IT!! I'm working on a lure right now but it can definitely wait for this!
Dude, thank you for the baking soda and super glue trick! I'm building a table and that filled in the knots SOLID! AWESOME IDEA.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL carving! You have inspired me to take up making lures- I hope that I can be even half as good as you some day!
The detail is insane. Definitely top 10 most realistic
This the most beautiful lure I’ve ever seem
1. Love the baby! 2. Like the fun facts while u are working 3. The word u were looking for the lead issue was “rationalizing” 😊
You need to start making your own wooden floats with a Marlin Baits logo on them. I would totally buy one! 👍🤞
I love how you have the montage of him making the bait while explaining the fish entirely, this is saving time.
“Gold speckle turd” Marling baits 2021 🤣🤣
Marling Baits - The Reason I open UA-cam in the morning! Amazing Lure
I think you should do a deep diving walleye swim bait.
This small mouth bass lure has to be one of your all time best. Would love one!
Little fins first steps on UA-cam. Huge moment
Definitely one of the most beautiful Designs I've seen from you...
I’d love to see a walleye swimbait those crazy eyes would be sick maybe use glow in the dark material for the eyes
Nice detailed swim bait and nice action. Great working bait you will gave to test it out on the water and see if you can get a nice small mouth bass.. Great work as always . and you do great video work to. You can tell you take pride in your work . i think you are the best on the internet.

Your Fun Facts segments are great!! Please keep doing them! Thanks!
“Technique established. Stick it in there, and fill it up till you start seeing it at the top.”
a work of art! Your kids are even more so. Take good care of them and the lovely wife.
your son has magically grown up. i'm not good with time, but seems fast.
This is one of your most beautiful baits. Thank you.
Hey Marling I've been a huge fan of the channel and even started making my own lures. I was wondering if you would be interested if I sent one or two and you did a video rating them.
Do you sell them?
Heck yeah! A new Marling Baits video to watch as soon as I get back from fishing with some Epic Puds and 1.7s.
Today is a good day. 😎
To the tune of One Day by Metisyahu: one day, is all it takes, to make these baits and the angler will play. One day... one day.. one day-a-ah-hay.
Love that song😁
Fore sure best one you ever painted 100%. Great work.
I would like to see a lighting trout lure

Good evening Nate.
The pinnacle of bait making right here imo. This is definitely one of my favorites you’ve done.
I love how the whole vid is just a voiceover of him reading wiki

New 'T-Shirt' .................. discount advertising !!!!
Great Bait !!!!
Makes a smallmouth bass lure, but doesn't use basswood. thats just a missed opportunity.
One of your most beautiful to date! Can`t wait to see your fishing rods come to life. I`m sure there will be a process but will be worth it! I fish a lot up here in Canada and it is so relaxing to watch you create your baits. Thanks for the chuckles to.
Make a Chip bait with a tail that wags so it has some action
That would be awesome.
As long as he "walks the dog"
I really like the pressed in scales. They look great. The carved fins are also a nice detail.
The inspirational music in the end tops the cake. Lol. Beautiful bait yet again. One of my favorites from your channel. Well done sir.
Way to go extra! That bait looks awesomely real. I need one in my life.
Handsome wee man you have there. He should be 'helping' in your workshop before long.
I enjoy seeing your young assistant pop in for a visit!
I’ve been a long time follower for a few years now and I’ve gotta say this is among one of the best baits you have made. Bravo good sir Marling.
By far one of the most realistic looking I've seen made by hand 🔝🔥
the scale patter rolling technique is so cool, great way to get some actual depth and texture without carving individually
Finally. Gonna watch this as soon as I get of work.
I don't know why I'm amazed and impressed every time I should be use to it by now lol. Great work
You're paint jobs are incredible. Nice work
The painting portion was just great 😊
When it floated perfectly was praying you left it alone and you did. Turned out amazing

Love to see Finn, great job on the bait. Looks super fly.
That is amazing. Think it's my favourite hard lure you've shown us. Everything about it is perfect. Nice to see the family too - looks like you're living the dream Nate.
This is the most realistic lure that I have ever seen!

This is the coolest bait so far. So realistic.
young Marling Junior looking good in his arctic gear ! ready to take over the bait making business !
Definitely one of my favorite baits you’ve done so far. Have really enjoyed watching your boy grow up man, there’s nothing better.
