Out of all the woodworking videos yours are the best. No ego. Lots of humor. Lots of humility and fun. Satisfying projects and fun to learn from you! I wanna make your california state cut out sometime! I'm a novice woodworker based in Pasadena, CA
French cleats are one of my faves for mounting "Stuff" I've used it for mounting wall hanging pedestals for art work, floating cabinets, etc. I have a dream of one day having a whole wall of french cleat mounted tool organization that you can customize according to what your working on. Thanks for posting, enjoy your videos here and at Mere Minutes.
A darn good job, Steve. Not only are your hand tools better organized, but it looks much neater, and is very pleasing to the eye for folks like ourselves. Who like to spend time wood working. A credit to you, and well narrated and explained!
Great video...........best part is it can easily be rearranged and changed. We just had a 12 x 20 shed put on our property last October. You've just solved my storage problems.
I've built a FC wall above my workbench and came here for some tool holder ideas,... you never disappoint. Thanks for sharing. I enjoy your videos and your personality.
Got Inspired by this video and started to build similar storage system today. Extra effect - used for that all leftovers accumulated for years and got extra space! Thanks Steve!
This is a fantastic project but I will kind of miss your old messy storage ... That was the perfect background for mere mortal videos! Thanks for sharing ...
You are brilliant. I design furniture now i am taking the plunge and im going to build them myself. I have spent alot of money on my tools and my business is going to start in 6 weeks. Your probably thinking so what but im a woman and i dont see many out there as carpenters. Keep these videos up they are brilliant. Thank you so much.
Like the fact you showed how the screwdriver holder didn't work and needed modifying and that you thanked your Facebook contributors. It gives your video an honest and humble feel to it. You also look like you are having a great old time, which makes it enjoyable to watch, some video makers take life way to serious. Thanks
Great idea!! I also use the same old system, the peg board, to hang tools and it looks like a disaster, "no matter how much I tried to organized it". Your french cleat storage system idea, is definitely, by far a much better system for hand tools... Thanks.
I am fond of french cleats myself. I used french cleats to hang window planters and such on the fence around my yard. You can also buy the metal french cleat hangers at big box stores. The avantage of the metal ones is they fit a saw kerf - great if you are hard up for space, or the thing you wish to hang is small. On a different note, the Charger chrome would fit on the screw driver holder nicely, I think. John in Hadley
Steve, good to see you still growing. Impressive. I followed you years ago when I copied a lot of you bandsaw boxes. I see numerous tool sponsors you have picked up. I think it was around 2009-12 when I first donated a few $$. back when I first moved to Florida. Glad to see you again.
I know this video is old, but I was looking for videos about French cleats and this is one that came up. I am finishing out a cabin and I am thinking about using this type of system for my home.
I like it! i just moved and now have some room to make my own workshop. No more dragging everything outside to do any kind of project. This will definitely be one of my first. You have a lot of good tips for doing fun little projects. Keep 'em coming. Thanks
Love it! I've come across french cleats for this purpose before, but this is the first time I've seen it used for organizing tools. The final setup looks great.
Very clever system you implemented! Lucky you! You've got all the right tools for such a task! And on top of that, you're artistic too! (turning green with envy)!
I do not really comment much, but this is what I have been looking for all time, thank you so much for such a great video, I loved it and it inspired me a lot, many thanks
Great video, thank you. I’ve pulled almost everything off my work bench and have started making shelves for my timber. Was trying to work out how to organise all my tools 😊
Sonny I am fully convinced now to give Pegboard a miss. Metal I can handle but French Cleat is great! You are a very good Instructor and now I know to do better!
I actually have a huge french cleat system designed in my head to store all my remodeling tools on the garage wall so I don't have to drive them in my van with me everywhere I go. Loved seeing a mini version of it to give me some ideas before I start building my own. Now I just need a little free time.
Nicely done Steve. I have always loved the french cleat design. so simple and yet so functional. For your saws you can make a 1/4" piece with the same profile as the hanger and put one screw in the middle to attach it to the hanger. When you hang the saw turn the 1/4" piece 90deg and you won't have to worry about your saws falling off.
I have pegboard also. Although I like the cleat idea, I use "Talon" pegboard pegs and they are much better than the steel ones. I also have only 1 full set of screwdrivers and only 1 full set of pliers which makes it easier to store them. Good video and the production quality was very good.
Gracias por estas ideas tan buenas. Unos días atrás construí un mueble para ordenar mis herramientas, pero dejé pendiente las herramientas más pequeñas. ahora ya sé como ordenarlas. Gracias de nuevo.
Steve, Good looking system! I was glad to see you put the fronts on the screwdriver holders, you do live in earthquake country. You would not want them all to tumble down at once, especially if working at the bench. I am actually in the process of reorganizing my shop and this comes at a great time. Thanks!
Wow! Thanks so much for this video, I’ve zero experience but own loads of basic tools most of which I can’t name and I’m pretty sure I don’t use them for their designed purpose but I’m going to give this storage system a red hot go because my current mess is unacceptable and this makes sense. Wish me luck!
*looks at all those pliers enviously* Good job, and I love French cleats! Figuring how to use this in my cellar with its horribly crooked and crumbly walls. Perhaps mount a few sheets of multiplex first..
I really like your French cleat system and it looks great. However, I still think it’s lots of work. For an amateur wood worker, like me, the pegboard with an assorted peg hooks you can fairly well organized quickly. Also for screwdrivers and such, I have used an eight foot long 2x3 and drilled whole bunch of holes and attached it near the bottom of the board. I can easily access screwdrivers, drill bits (blind holes) etc easily. I can create.instant storage without having to spend time on making specific tool cleats. This said I think you have much neat looking storage and adorable someone young and setting ups new shop may be your system is worth considering.
Thanks for your video. I just put up some interior walls on a new garage and am leaning towards using all French cleats but am tempted by pegboard as well. The lazy side of me thinks peg hangers would be easier but I do like the idea of making custom holders for the few tools I do have.
Good one Steve, Ive been making stuff cleats, Ive put the cleats right around the woodshop , the cleats are strong enough to hang clamp racks and cupboards on and can be moved so easily if you want to change things around, great vid blogs all the best Will
I feel you on the cold. I have been busting my butt all week moving back into our house, overdid it, and picked up a bad chest cold. This chemo might be saving my life, but it sure does a number on my immune system! Better than the alternative, though! I am reorganizing my shop, I might use that french cleat idea, thanks a ton!
This will be my storage system when I build a new shop. Thanks Steve! I was think on your screw driver hanger. Instead of glueing the wood on the front glue a strip of rubber then cut slits in it with a utility knife. Then you can pop the drivers in and out the front instead of pulling them up.
Over the years, I've become a minimalist. I acknowledge that I spent a part of my life over-compensating for my general lack of skill by hoarding 'gear'. Doesn't matter the hobby, it's very common. Some hobbies are notorious for triggering the hoarding impulse (woodworking and guns being the two most extreme examples I've ever seen). When I finally realized that I don't need 7 sets of screwdrivers and the same block plane 3 times over, well, the next week was a helluva yardsale. My weakness is .10 cent files at yard sales. New ones are just so expensive, the old ones are just so good, I still buy those. But otherwise, yeah. 5 framing hammers? Adios to 4. The emphasis is now on getting better at using chisels than acquiring more and more and more chisel sets.
Man...after uploading my first youtube video, I have a greater appreciation for all the work that you do. Thanks for not only all the great tips, but for all the time you spend editing and uploading. Aloha!
Ha ha. I am in the middle of building my own. I love it so much I am doing same system for my electronics lab as well. Anyone thinking of doing this, then yes you have to do it! The best part is being able to move hangers about. One thing I did was make my cleats five inches top to bottom as I found this gave me better fixings on large hangers. I have used 1/2 inch ply and made holders for not only the screw drivers but all my heavy power tools as well. It is surprising how strong these can be made.
Out of all the woodworking videos yours are the best. No ego. Lots of humor. Lots of humility and fun. Satisfying projects and fun to learn from you! I wanna make your california state cut out sometime! I'm a novice woodworker based in Pasadena, CA
I like this guy, he's down to earth I enjoy his projects ,there never over my head
I love the way he keeps randomly giggling :D it's fun to watch!
I’m getting back into woodworking and binge-watching woodworking videos. Yours are the best by far. Thank you!

You can tell you were having a lot of fun making the different hanging solutions.
I was smiling the whole build. Such a satisfying project!
I really like how versatile this is. Much stronger than a peg board to. Very nice

This video changed my life. I think I had more fun building this than any other project
Brilliant job. Can see the functionality in it straight away. Light even hang my shadow box using french cleats.
I've looked at lots of tool storage systems and this is bar far the best! Thank you.
Seems like a lot of work making the parts for every single tool, BUT I have not heard of this cleat system. Very simple and functional. Amazing!
Like the fact you showed how the screwdriver holder didn't work and needed modifying and that you thanked your Facebook contributors. It gives your video an honest and humble feel to it. You also look like you are having a great old time, which makes it enjoyable to watch, some video makers take life way to serious. Thanks
Those French cleat systems are the bomb as they are infinitely customizable!
Very nice System, And man what a difference it makes! Great Project!
That's very much of an improvement over what you had there , trying to organize my own walls now and thanks for the ideas.
Great way to do it. The best part is that you can arrange or rearrange it as the need arises.
Great idea!! I also use the same old system, the peg board, to hang tools and it looks like a disaster, "no matter how much I tried to organized it". Your french cleat storage system idea, is definitely, by far a much better system for hand tools... Thanks.

love what you did with your workshop....aesthetically pleasing. good job! you gave me great ideas for my tool shed as well
I know this video is old, but I was looking for videos about French cleats and this is one that came up. I am finishing out a cabin and I am thinking about using this type of system for my home.
Really good ideas and as always, a pleasure to watch. Hope you feel better soon.

Steve
I really appreciate the organization theme you have going on the last few episodes.
Keep up the good work!
Very clever idea. Simple and elegant. Thanks
Love it! I've come across french cleats for this purpose before, but this is the first time I've seen it used for organizing tools. The final setup looks great.
Man 2013 Steve looks older than 2020 Steve! Whatever you're doing keep it up!
Great Job! Those French cleats would be a handy improvement to my own set up. Thanks for the video.
Well done my Good man
The Clutter was killing me !!!!
Love it. A basic system that you can make however complecated you want, and if you don't like how you did something, its easy to make a new hanger.
Nothing better than these Original UA-cam (or close to it), vids...
Cheers Legend
this is a great video. short, simple, super informative and inspiring.
I actually have a huge french cleat system designed in my head to store all my remodeling tools on the garage wall so I don't have to drive them in my van with me everywhere I go. Loved seeing a mini version of it to give me some ideas before I start building my own. Now I just need a little free time.
just made my own french cleat tool storage with the help of the video. Thank you.
French cleat is king! Nice job Steve.
That's really good. An excellent idea for when I eventually get around to sorting out my garage and buy the right equipment.
Your storage projects have been repeatedly my favorites.
in general, modular solutions are solutions that can be re-used, require more work, but will save you time in the future. it's really nice.
Thanks Steve I like the french cleat hangers, can't wait to get over this winter and revamp my garage.
Nicely done Steve. I have always loved the french cleat design. so simple and yet so functional. I don't even make stuff with wood, but I really enjoy your videos.
This was great, I’ve never seen this system before but it is absolutely brilliant.
so many great ideas to fix our tools, thanks steve.
greetings from Italy
I have pegboard also. Although I like the cleat idea, I use "Talon" pegboard pegs and they are much better than the steel ones. I also have only 1 full set of screwdrivers and only 1 full set of pliers which makes it easier to store them. Good video and the production quality was very good.

Steve,
Good looking system! I was glad to see you put the fronts on the screwdriver holders, you do live in earthquake country. You would not want them all to tumble down at once, especially if working at the bench.
I am actually in the process of reorganizing my shop and this comes at a great time. Thanks!
hey steve your method is the best yet.
Sweet! The best thing is you aren't really locked into anything. You can add and move stuff around as you see fit. Great idea!
Great job, you gave me some great ideas to reorganize my shop, thanks so much!
Dude... Nice. I love the French Cleat. Using right now to hang a coat rack on the wall. I have used in to a entry way bench to hold it to the wall.
Wow! Thanks so much for this video, I’ve zero experience but own loads of basic tools most of which I can’t name and I’m pretty sure I don’t use them for their designed purpose but I’m going to give this storage system a red hot go because my current mess is unacceptable and this makes sense.

I was thinking the same about your screwdriver holder before you said you needed to adjust it. Looks good.
love the french cleat - interesting variety of ways to hold tools
Great System Steve, I like the way you solved that chaos in to structure but kept it to look like chaos..... Yub, I like chaos!
*looks at all those pliers enviously*
Good job, and I love French cleats! Figuring how to use this in my cellar with its horribly crooked and crumbly walls. Perhaps mount a few sheets of multiplex first..
Absolutely brilliant little tuition
Great video! Planning to use a french cleat system to organize my tools and your ideas will get me started. Thanks for the video!
Great job Steve.... love the flexibility that system allows. Who knows, that hand held drill might make it's dusty way back.
Cheers.
Looks awesome, like something old school workshops have.
Very cool! I really like that french cleat hanger system.
Really clever design! I like the saw holder idea.
Very awesome mr.steve, any wood work is very easy thanks to you, I can make it 👏
Very nice set up. I wish I had clamps like you have screw drivers....you can never have enough.
Very impressive and a captivating personality.
Great ideas, clearly shown in good video. Lots of good ideas to pick and choose from.
im glad you fixed the screw drivers. i was thinking those would fall
I'll have to keep this system in mind when my garage/workshop is finished. Looks real useful.
You should be on TV, your the best!
This maybe your best video yet! Thanks.
I really like your French cleat system and it looks great. However, I still think it’s lots of work. Your videos keep getting better.
Hi Steve Great vid another option I use for screwdrivers and chisels is the old wire spice rack that hold those little boxes or jars/shakers.
Thanks for your video. I just put up some interior walls on a new garage and am leaning towards using all French cleats but am tempted by pegboard as well. The lazy side of me thinks peg hangers would be easier but I do like the idea of making custom holders for the few tools I do have.

Dude that is some GREAT stuff. I like how your mind works.
Another wonderful job
Simple ideas - Great solutions - Great job Steve
I used the French cleat idea from this vid to hang my john heitz drill press cabinet. thanks for the great idea!
"BOOM!!! THEY'RE GONE"
Best tool organization video, simple, easy, entertaining!
I can only wish to be this knowledgeable on woodworking!!!!
This will be my storage system when I build a new shop. Thanks Steve! I was think on your screw driver hanger. Instead of glueing the wood on the front glue a strip of rubber then cut slits in it with a utility knife. Then you can pop the drivers in and out the front instead of pulling them up.
This system is just the idea and what i need for my shed...Thanks heaps
I am impressed with your set up! Very good.
love what you did there..Very clever,I need some organization like that..Now I have the inspiration to do it...Thank you once again Steve
Great stuff I can put to use. Also very professional video, it felt like I was watching a show and not UA-cam.
One of your best projects, Steve!
That is a very inventive system! I like that idea! Thanks for sharing.

The emphasis is now on getting better at using chisels than acquiring more and more and more chisel sets.
Two chisel sets is pretty justifiable though. One where you meticulously maintain a flat back and one where you...don't
