I had the same problem with my 2003 grand am. The switch cover broke away from the switch assembly and the switches broke. I was without cruise for about 1 year until I found a new assembly on eBay for a decent price.

Like me, they probably didn't watch your video BEFORE they tried to "fix" the cruise control buttons..the bottom of the button housing pulls off rather easily (too easily in my opinion) with the entire steering wheel intact. Oh Btw I have an 03 Grand Am with 228000 miles on it. Motor is still running strong!

Did the Coast light come on when you set the cruise?

No, they quit putting CRUISE lights on the cluster after 2001 I think. The only light that’s on is the ON/OFF button on the wheel.

@@MichaelAdamsRocks Might be based on trim level or a light out in the instrument cluster? My '03 GT has the Cruise light.
Somewhat related is that some GM vehicles will disable cruise control when the third brake light burns out/breaks. (Interesting way of letting you know its broke...)

Can you just unhook the battery cables instead of pulling fuse to the air bag and fuse to the horn

My cruise on my 99GT is not working. The on/off switch was not going in an now after working on the switches it is but i don't think it stays in. I have led brake lights that i'm wondering if they are the problem. I have a resistor on the 3rd brake light because the abs light was coming on. For fixing the flash rate on the other lights i modded that flasher circuit built into the hazard warning switch. I really would like to get my cruise control working.
Update: There is a tiny metal piece on the on/off switch that can fall off the shaft it is on if the gap between the top and bottom plastic housing pieces is too big or if the shaft it is on breaks. That piece is what locks the switch on when it is pressed in. If you take the switch apart be careful because the tiny metal piece can fall out without you even noticing it. My Grand Am has a metal shaft that holds that piece but i have read Aleros have a plastic shaft that breaks which will also cause the button not to stay in. It is a very tiny piece with 3 lobes on it.

I switched to all LED's, every single light, and my cruise still works. I got tired of replacing them dumb circuit boards for the taillights 2x a year even though they have a lifetime warranty. I bought some Spyder brand LED taillight assemblies and changed all the other bulbs to LED.

Seems to me you've been screaming at the top of your lungs inexhaustibly for hours on end during your sleep. Happened to a guy once. Saw that shit on Investigation Discovery. Shits whacked.

You didn't actually need to do any of that with the steering wheel/airbag, you could have just installed the switch part of the assembly which was missing on yours. Would have been a 5 minute job at most.
