Will Grass Seed Grow WITHOUT Topdressing (Before & After) ?

- This customer requested scarifying and aerating, and asked if I would throw some of his seeds down for him. I offered to do the seeding for free, but spent some time explaining to him that the seeds may not germinate as well because there is no topdressing.
Anyway I decided to think about what I could do to at least get the best chances of decent germination.
After all, heavy rain, birds and strong winds can all move seeds around and end up leaving bare spots.
Watch the video in full to see what I did, and how it turned out in the end.

101 UA-cam videos covering the same thing but this is the best I’ve watched, like the way he explains things straightforward and simple, even showing grass seed used, etc. Top video
Thanks 😊
So helpful for me to have a go at doing my garden thank you
great style of video doing a before and after. Brilliant work Shaun
Thanks
Amazing work all around.
Before and after shots always add fantastic insight. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Thank you so much 😀
Very nice Shaun.👏🏻
Great job Shaun. Thanks for all your help. Did a renovation 4 weeks weeks ago. Yes I've got patches and top dressed but such heavy rain since I did it. Still waiting and hoping.
Hmm ok.. I'd say if still patches in 2 weeks then reseed those.. thanks
You're amazing at this work
Thanks 😁
Top notch! I do the same thing at work on bowling greens and putting greens :) wish my wife and I had the money for top dressing back at our new house as I could barely afford seed! Great job
Thanks!
Good morning mate….
Great vid as normal. Just about to scarify my lawn today overseed, dress and net! Love watching you’re vids!
🤓
Best of luck! Weathers looking better finally!
Im a subber, and love your tips and tricks, you do awesome work!!.
We just did our own lawn, after your recomodations, and now waiting in anticipation 😀👍.
It is still too cold, but next week will be warmer here in Denmark, so, just waiting 🙄😀👍
Thanks from Denmark 🇩🇰
Thank you for watching, really appreciate it! Let us know how it goes in the next few weeks!
Mine is an Apache and I’ve sent complaint to the company. Thanks for your help again.
Nicely done. I have one area in the back that has always been terribly compacted. (New construction 3 years ago.) I have aerated and overseeded but it's still very thin. I'm going to try some gypsum in that area and see if it helps. Thanks for the great videos.
Thanks for sharing!
Great work!
Thank you! Cheers!
i’d say you did one heck of a job sir. the back yard turned out a lot better than what you
we’re saying. and the front looked great. the shaded area gonna be hard to
maintain. but still looks great. 💯
Thanks!
Good stuff👍
Yea great stuff I watched a old video of yours on moss and I drilled a section of my clay lawn were miss is 3 weeks back I am getting new grass shoots and less moss thanks for that video I think my neighbours think I am loosing it 😀 😄
Ha ha great to hear and yes we all get funny looks 😁
Top man Shaun

Hi shaun great job , top dressing is a massive facter here on lawns. Today i used the lanzie spreader which is a wicked tool to use for dressing lightly cover once over the seed, mix of compost, topsoil & sand the seed will love this mixture. Iittle bit worried thou that the weather is getting bit colder next week at night for about 4 or 5 days average temp at around 2 to 5 deg and in the day 8 to 11 deg.
Hi that temp doesn't worry me too much.. even the odd brief blip below zero should be just fine. Nice mixture suggestion for the seed
ok thankyou shaun about the weather wise
Great job there Shawn, Aer ate mate!!
🤣🤣🤣
Hi Shaun. We find that builder's bags are a better option for waste thatch from scarifying. They are relatively light, hold a large amount and the bags never split and are convenient to handle.
Hi totally agree.. And easier on the back ☺️☺️
Just scarified my Dads lawn, thanks for the inspiration.
Scarified, aerated (throughly with garden fork) overseeded and put down preseed then composted rolled and watered
Can you scarify too much if you still see moss? I did 5 passes with my electric scarifier and raked many times. I got a lot out but stopped at 5 because I was scared I was damaging the lawn
Thanks Roy
Hi basically the more you take out the more you potentially will need to reseed. Nothing wrong with getting as much moss out as possible.. all good 😊
An interesting option of no top dressing there. Would be good to see how much comes through now temperatures are on the up. Talking of Lawnsmith seed, I was thinking the other day when you mentioned about your own lawn being reseeded with a more ornamental mix, the Lawnsmith ornamental seed would be a cracking option. 80% fescue and 20% bent.
Great suggestion! im still undecided, just busy with renovations. def gonna address this though soon
Amazing what a man can pack in his van lol!!!
Thank you Shaun really learnt a lot from your video's. In the case of reseeding just small areas's on my main lawn and the new seed just germinating can I mow as the good parts of the lawn the grass is quite high around 3 inches'.
Hi yes absolutely, just tread carefully and when turning the mower 😊😊 thanks
@@LawnRight Thank you
I did mine last week without the top dressing, 223m2, but I never used a roller, I just sprayed it with a wetting agent. I will use a roller next time, thanks for the good advice.
That will help stick it a bit.. fingers crossed
Had a new seeded lawn sowed last year, after a very wet winter what grew is great but very patchy, let's hope this works
You can do this 😊
I use lawnsmith and seeded the whole lawn with the Classic mix. I don't use it now for overseeding as the fescue is just a nightmare for thatch. I scarify a couple of times a year and there's always bags full and my lawn is only 65m2.
Looks good though doesnt it.. but can get disease also
Yes it is a good lawn
Very helpful thank 👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
thanks!
I'm stealing that aerate joke.😅
Omg lol.. it's definitely a dad joke..
Seeding our back garden in the next few days. We have 3 dogs so no chance of using a lot of topsoil so I will just throw it on. I have done this a few times now and it always seems to work. Going away in a few weeks so the night before put more seed down and it will have 7 free days of nothing walking on it, will put water on it as well.
fingers crossed.. a fleece would help if going away
Is this true even when they are peeing on it? I have a puppy and I'm planning on temp fencing the garden an doing half at a time with a fleece
Most of the instructions provided on boxed seed will tell you to lightly rake over the seed once spread to get them mixed into whatever soil is present. This has worked for me in the past but if you were going to add compost to your lawn it is better to time these two events to coincide.
Completely agree. The seeding on this job was free so I wasnt going to rake all the lawns on this one. Too much work. I hoped the scarify and roller would be enough. Its def a good point though so I'm going to write a post explaining that.. many thanks
Hi Shaun great video as always looking for some quick advice. Today I did some scarifying, over seeding with some fertiliser and used compost as a top soil and brushed and went around and pressed it all in. I then gave it some water but here are my questions:
1) How often should I water it at the moment
2) How long should I water for on let's say the standard cone setting
3) How long do I leave the lawn until I mow it? Or what signs am I looking for for it to be safe to do a mow
I did the scarifying with a rake but i'm definitely going to invest in a wolf garten one for the next time I do it
Hi you need to keep seeds damp for afew weeks then regular watering after.. ant setting info e but medium to light in intensity cheers
@@LawnRight Thanks Shaun for the advice. Keep up the great content
I have been inspired by watching many of your videos to do something about my lawn. In the 12 years of living in old converted barn on the edge of a field it has never been cared for at all. It is uneven covered in unbelievable amounts of moss and weeds with barely any actual grass. This week I have started the scarifying and in most patches to bare soil as most of the moss of weeds have come up before moving to aerating. Do you think I should actually put down lawn weed killer first and then wait to re-seed and top dress and would it be better to use top soil or a compost. Thank you kindly in advance for your advice. Dave
Hi Dave..if you use s typical weedkiller now you'll need to wait at least 4 to 6 weeks before reasonably ok to seed without the weedkiller affecting it.. this outs you into summer heat and the huge increase in watering needs, during and after its come through.. you could use roundup now but itll kill everything it touched including grass.... on the good side you are safe to start reseeding after 2 weeks. Only other option is to just seed and acceot weeds in the new lawn for a few months and use a general lawn weedkiller later in afew months.. good luck
If you don't have a lawn lute or roller, what are some budget approaches to ensuring seed to soil contact for smaller gardens?
Great videos by the way!!!
Hi. A brush or back flat edge of a rake work just fine, and instead of a roller just walk on it to tread it all in
Really enjoy your videos andrew. I scarified, aerated and overseeded my lawn 2 weekends ago - had a full week and a bit of rain here in ireland, now we've had this lovely sunshine since Sunday, should I start watering the lawn now or should it be wet enough til the weekend til the rain comes again? Thanks
Hi Cormac, main thing is o not let the seeds/groun ddry out till its all come through.. and then after that to still water a few times a week for a few months to help the roots develop.. so even when it has been raining iyt may have been dry at times.. anyway, yes keep watering and see what happens.. should be very close now
@@LawnRight perfect thanks for taking the time to respond, shall do some watering before work in the morning
Hi Shaun. Upside of cool damp Spring is no need to water! Just a bit more patience needed for germination.
Apologies if this question was already asked. I had a quick scroll through and couldn't see it:
The moss looked quite brown on the video and there seem to be very few broad-leaved weeds, so I'm wondering: before you scarified, did you apply any weed and moss killer at all?
Hi yes this customer has all our treatments so there should be pretty much no weeds at all
Great video and very useful. What would suggest as a top dressing and how would it be applied
Hi I generally use this stuff lawnright.co.uk/compost/ you can use a compost spreader or throw it on and brush it in
Great video as always, thank you. I’d like to ask if the the Landzie manual aerator is any good, would you recommend it?
I’ve only got a small lawn, new build so sh1t soil etc. I bought one from elsewhere and it’s pants, can’t even get it in to the ground despite the ground being constantly wet.
Hi watch this video ua-cam.com/video/evJW7lw_9Qk/v-deo.html all 4 are good. They all clog at some point but a poke and squirt with wd40 makes them great again
Hi Shannon great video...
My lawn has separated and growing in clumps.. what would you suggest to do? Many thanks
Might have to kill it off and start again but start with a scarifier and give it agood run over then reseed and see how it goes.. sounds like some grasses died and left clumping varieties
Hi Shaun watch your videos could you give me an idea of how much you would charge for an average size garden scarification thanks lee
Hi Lee we dont share our prices I'm afraid but a typical scarify might take 1 to 3 hours. It depends on how much thatch is in the lawn and if it needs scarifying more than once. So pricewise depend son your own overheads and what you need to make to cover that, wages etc
If I was the homeowner I wouldn't even bother trying to make that shaded spot a lawn. It would look much better as a small cottage garden area and it would cope with the shade so much better.
its a good idea
That's not too bad, considering there was no top dressing. I think I'll do that (just over seed) when mine has taken hold, just to thicken it up in places where it's not so good. I've just finished my 270 square metre front garden, and HAVE top dressed with Field No.4 Organic Fine Grade Lawn Dressing on 200 square metres, but ran out so had to buy some emergency panic purchase regular multi compost with booster feed for the other 70 square metres (to finish the job). Oddly, the 200 square metres was one side of the garden (there was just enough of the Field No.4 organic dressing for that side - for guidance to others, 1,500 litres covered 200 square metres), and the other 70 square metres (8 x bags of 50 litre multi compost) was on the other side, with the driveway in between, so it will be interesting to see whether there is any difference in results between the two dressings. It is also interesting that the 70 square metres is roughly 1/3 of the 200 square metres, and the amount of compost used was 8 x 50 litre bags = 400 Litres, which equates to 5.7 litres per square metre, whereas the other 200 square metres, took 1,500 litres of the Field No.4 organic dressing, which equates to 7.5 litres per square metre. So which one covered the best, and which will perform the best? We'll see!
hashtag watch this space :) nice feedback!
I will be amazed if you see any difference between the 2 top dressings
Where I live ( north east uk )
Feild no 4 is out of the question
Would be cheaper to top dress with silver flakes
@@boyasaka Well around 3 weeks or so later, I'm quite happy with the results. To be honest, it's hard to see any difference between the two top dressings. If there IS a difference, it's not noticeable. I do have a lot of worm casts, and ruddy moles are digging here and there! I've no idea how to stop them. Typical - all my hard work, and a small rodent comes along and digs the place up!
❤
Hi Shaun, many thanks for the videos. Can I ask a question. I have been suffering with ants in my lawn for about 2 years now. They have annihalted it with ant hills and kills patches of grass. I've tried everything from powders, granuels and bait stations. I even started digging in my lawn to try remove as much nest as possible. I've just cut my lawn really short today to start the scarification and noticed 2 more ant nests on the edge of my lawn. I've dug about 3-4 inches deep and about 3 inches wide along my border out in frustration. I've put granuels down now. Will I just fill this with top soil or would you put compost down first then top soil? And do you have any tips for ant nests? Maybe buy a more heavy duty grass? They seem to have come when my patio got put in. Thanks again, Shaun.
Hi this will help.. ua-cam.com/video/M7lWY6vIWnQ/v-deo.html ditomateous earth seems to work well as does the ant gone,in that video cheers
I think you could have told me none has germinated and I would have believed you. It just looks like the existing grew and got greener due to further in the season. I would have liked to see a close up of actual new short shoots. Doing reseeding in WA state and temps are still on the low side for germination, thus I wonder how much of this lawn's seed really germinated.
When I next go I'll get another update
Could you show us how to keep up with dog patches and could you do a video of making a good compost please
Hi this video will help ua-cam.com/video/xVrKBXghTW0/v-deo.html. I now grow grass in pots and use it to transplant any burn marks
Extra protection - some rocks to prevent the owner driving on the grass 😄
🤣🤣
You forgot to put the links in the description for the tools
Great informative video as always !! Can you topdress by just scattering compost over the seeds ? Or does it need to be compressed in ?
You can do that. Just use s brush or rake though to work it in and down between the grass blades
@@LawnRight thanks for your quick reply mate , seeding today so it’s appreciated bud 👍
Hi there mate I have had a fair bit of problems with my new build lawn drainage problems, Mossy, bumpy lawn. I have recently received a bag of top soil as a peace offering to level the lawn out but it's come looking very gravely and fill of stones. Can I show you it to see if they are having me on?
It shouldn't have stones on it for levelling purposes. But you can seive the soil. Not sure what's happened there but I wouldnt be best pleased. The main issue is wondering why it's gotten to that state.. and what is under the ground. I'd use a spade and dig a square out 1 spade width.. mark out the 4 sides approx 7 to 10 inches and push the spade in and try to go down at least 7 or inches. What should he there is at least 100mm of topsoil but I feel almost certain itll be very little or clay or rubble or stones. Sadly this is very very common at the minute
Hello sir, i really apreciate the job that you are doing. I have a question: what happens if you just leave the holes open, without filling them after aeration? Will they close by themselves? I did the same thing you did in this video, but i am concerned that leaving the holes open will cause an excesive dehidration of the lower levels of the soil, during hot summer days. Cheers!
Hi theyll close naturally in time. Keep watering though
@@LawnRight will do, thanks!
Should increase drought tolerance as water gets down to roots rather than running off surface
I enjoy your videos mate but would be great to have higher resolution video
They are in 1080p which is supposed to be hd 🤔
It’s been cold in the North of England and seed germination has been poor. Hopefully it will be OK with warmer weather in the second half of April.
Hopefully! Blooming weather
Living in the north east myself I always seed in may
March and April far to early
@@boyasaka Agreed.
Great video, would a drag mat be used instead of a roller or is that a tool for something else?
hi its useful for draggign dressings around for levelling.. if you used it.. it would for sure move some seeds into holes but likely will not provide too much benefit
Love your content. Do you know any decent lawn care specislists in thr cheshire/merseydide area? Had few guys before Nd Ll thry do is turn up once a fortnight throw some plets on thr grass Nd get back in their van here for about 10 mins tops.
Yeah sadly not a lot of enthusiastic companies but often you'll find independant lawn care companies go the extra mile.. but not always.. sometimes one of the big franchises will have good guys running them
Hi Shaun does your scarified have solid blades like slitting blades or spring wire hook's got a job to do & very thick moss in places 8" deep before I cut it my mower got marooned on it. I can't hire on of those caged rollers to top dress do you suggest fling it on with a shovel.
Hi mine is the fixed blades.. the thin spindly metal prongs will do a gentler job and sounds like you'll be there way way longer with that and maybe regret it. By all means try it and see how much comes out but you may have to to over it several times .. yeah you can make piles of dressing and brush them around just be careful brushing on bare soil as it can move some seeds
@@LawnRight Thank you.
Love the videos Shaun.
I tried a renovation following your steps in Autumn but results have been awful. The compost I used to top dress was very claggy so I think i had too thick a layer so probably killed off the existing grass. Timing was bad as there followed incessant rain which left 2 small lawns waterlogged - my soil is clay.
I plan on trying again, with hollow tine aeration this time after scarifying and wobered if it is better to use a 70/30 top dressing mix in an attempt to improve the drainage or should I use just use compost?
Thanks a lot.
Hi theres merits to both.. a 70 30 mix would be ok. So the ground has at least something different in there... flipside, the compost will get organic matter in there, and if you sprinkle some gypsum down... will slowly improve the soil over time... if you can dig super deep holes maybe with a post hole borer you can make bigger gains
@@LawnRight Thanks Shaun,
Would there be any merit in doing scarify, aerate and top dress with 70/30 then a few weeks later scarify, overseed and top dress with compost 0 or would that be overkill?
Thanks
@@tinheadtinhead6505 Hi its not the worst thing Ive ever heard of doing. If you've heavily scarified the first time there won't be much left on the 2nd time, so just tread a little lighter but yes its definitely adding in much needed goodness

As long as it's a decent engine ie briggs and Stratton or Honda itll be good.
Hi Sean, what do you do with all the thatch you rake out after scarifying? I started composting mine, thanks Peter.
I just take it to a local farm who recycles green waste.. once I get started on renovations I can have up to 100 bags a week
It'll be like that movie, "The Birds."
he he yep!
About 10 days ago I put a fast growing seed down on a bed of 70% sand to soil compost mix I see nothing at the moment should I just put Bermuda seed in or should I wait and it's a fairly heavy traffic garden any help is appreciated
Hi as long as it's been religiously watered and the seed bed ie soil prepared right I'd wait another week or so to see any new shoots.. if its heavily used area a good forking would have been helpful prior to seeding but no worries on that
Hi, my scarifier tends to gather the thatch/moss into a ball under the deck so much so I have to lift the rear wheels to free it. It’s a fairly new machine. Is this normal? It’s a right pain because I have to keep stopping and starting to free the thatch and moss..
Hi mine does too.. however I make sure the rear flap is lifted up so it can discharge nice and easy..I dont use a collection box
How are you finding the camon now you’ve had it a while?
Love mine but v hard on hills
Yeah I dont mind it at all now.. agree on the hills though. For those I mich prefer the classen with the drum at the front but hey ho!
Hi Shaun, I’m in the process of completely renovating my lawn to include a herringbone drainage system. 5 tons of top soil was delivered, I was expecting not to see any stones in it but it has quite a few, is this ok for new turf to be laid on?
Hi.. this can happen sometimes sadly :(... Id be fairly ok to leave some small stones in like fingernail size at most but not too many maybe 1 or 2 per every 10cm square... roughly... if youve paid for and requsted screened soil and its not screened right Id certainly consider asking the supplier about it
I had this happen to me. Top soil full of stones.
Hi Shaun, I haven’t got a roller, is there anything else I could do/use for this part of the renovation ? PS thanks for the vids, I’ve learnt so much from you 😊

Inspired me to try again, scarified and seeded my lawn last year and it was going great until we got the hosepipe ban, couldnt keep the seedlings happy and most of it died off. I have since added in some salvaged turf to bare spots but worried its going to look odd as looks a different grass, is my best option just to scarify and over sow again? Also do you have any recommendations instead of the roller & lawn leveller? Would a lawmower with roller work? Limited on storage space as it is!
Hi lawnmower with roller will be fine.. theres agood chance itll stand out from the other grasses yes but will blend over many months. Could always scarify the rest and reseed with similar, or just the patch
@@LawnRight Thanks so much for replying, im going to scarify & overseed hopefully this is the year! Do you recommend using a specific lawn topdressing or will any compost do? So basicly cut the lawn, aerate, add seeds and use a roller for good germination contact ?
Yep.. but I MUCH prefer to add a topdressing. Oh and scarify too
Scalp lawn, scarify, aerate, add seeds, top dressing, walk or use roller, water and fertilize.
Would you recommend the Camon aerator Shaun?
Hi it's good yes absolutely and I like it for most situations.
What do you think of using straw instead of compost to keep the seeds in place?
Great idea 😊
@@LawnRight I don’t know if it’s better. It’s just cheaper. Have you ever compared co post to straw?
The only thing I know is that if you use straw, you need to use those certified to have no weed seeds in it. A friend of mine bought generic straw and ended up with a front yard full of every weed imaginable.
which part of the scarifier did you use the wire or blade roller?
The blade.my scarifier doesnt have the wire spokes 😊

Weird how the customer had the full monty 5 star treatment, but too tight for the most important part for germination? Odd client
In all honesty he only wanted aeration doing. I said it could really do with a scarify as well. He said if you can out my seed down I'll have it scarified.. so thats kind show it all panned out.. but yes shame it didnt get the dressing on but I do think it should mostly come back
In short, aerate and seed yields low germination. Add topdressing and it increases massively.
So your customer didn’t want you to top dress, I’m sure you explained to them as you did to us as to why you should do this. I’m interested to know why they didn’t want you to do this, surely it wasn’t down to cost?
Hi, they originally only wanted aeration, but I explained that it desperately need scarifying also, and he agreed on the basis I would throw down some of his own grass seed, so I just did what I could that without spending hours and hours. Luckily I think it's going to come mostly good in a few more weeks though

🤣🤣true!
Wouldn't it be easier to use a grass box to collect all the dead grass. I'm always surprised when you're not using one❓
Yes but they fill up literally in like a few seconds so its kind of a waste of time sadly
I actually put one on mine I do have to change it every time I go up once. But I would rather do that then scrape it all up at the end
How much for the job
I don't disclose our prices I'm afraid but it was just over half a days work
That shady patch would do a world better if they would pay you to trim up all those bushes and shrubs nice and tight. It’s a shame to see you do all that work and not get the benefits of soil amendments like compost/top soil. People just don’t get it. 👍 They need a remedial driving course too! 😂🤷🏼♂️
😁😁
What else does a blind customer expect?
It looks aerate 😂😂
ha ha lol lol lol cheers!!
Not surprised they didn't want top dressing if they are running that hot tub at the current electric prices 😛
:)
What a depressing looking home. Looks like a prison. Thanks for the video, helpful content.
Lots of houses have been rendered because it’s trendy - personally I prefer their brick neighbours!
At least the lawn is easy on the eye now!
Looks like man taste .
