  • Large scale recreation of the Solar System in Minecraft.
    Please Read Video Description for FAQ.
    This is all made in Minecraft Vanilla 1.8. Download link below.
    All the planets are the correctly sized in relationship with each other.
    All the moons have been included and labeled.
    All the planets rings have been included and labeled.
    I wanted this to be an educational tool as well as something awesome to look at, so maybe someone flying around the Solar System will learn something.
    Each planet has a chest with a book containing information about that specific planet.
    The Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune.
    *********** READ THIS ********************
    *Yes, I know the rings of Uranus and Saturn are tilted. They were made horizontal in this world because trying to put them at the correct angle, looked like colorful stairs and made it difficult to tell what you were looking at. Also, they wouldn't fit in the Minecraft world if I tilted them, so they would get cut off :)
    *Yes I know Jupiter has 4 rings too. But they are so thin and dimly lit that compared to the rest of the rings, I didn't have a way to put them in here with them looking correctly, because they are only visible when back-lit by the sun.
    *The Sun is small on purpose. If I made it to scale, it wouldn't even come close to fitting in the world of Minecraft. I made the world the way it is so people can download it and open it without it crashing their computers trying to load something that size.
    *Yes I know Uranus is pronounced "ur-unus". How I pronounced it is how I heard it the entire time I was growing up. It's a locality colloquialism that's a hard habit to break.

    This is great! Have you thought about creating a model that includes scale distances between the planets? I've had my students build similar models in MinecraftEDU, and want to include a more practical way of representing distances between the planets.

    • @capp00
      @capp00  9 років тому +1

      I considered it but with the massive distance between them and the way Minecraft handles chunk rendering, people would fly for literal months/years to get to them and the minecraft rendering world would destroy itself :)

      Minecraft has a maximum world height of 255 blocks. You can't change that. And when these large planets take up most of that space with their mass, their rings would get cut off at the top and the bottom and look really stupid. Another reason the sun is so small. if I made it to scale, not only would most people's computers not be able to render it (it's massive), it would be cut off and look flattened.

      I really, really thought about it. There are 5 (Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris...and Ceres in the asteroid belt). I went back and forth about adding them. Aside from Ceres, the rest of them are waaaay out there and very tiny. 3 of them would have only been 2x2 blocks or less at this scale. After sailing past the huge gas giants, only seeing a 2x2 block in the void might have been missed by most :)

    This is really cool and I am NOT bashing this so don't reply "like you can do better" or anything like that.... Uranus' rings are actually vertical because it's axis is sideways from our perspective. But you did a REALLY great job with this and that's some friggin dedication with Jupiter lol.

    • @capp00
      @capp00  8 років тому

      Thanks, and yes I'm aware. As I said in the video annotations and in the
      video description, along with dozens of other comments, I'm aware that
      the rings are tilted. They aren't actually vertical, they are at a 110
      degree slant. I couldn't do that in minecraft because it looked like
      broken stairs and with the size of the world restriction, it would cut
      off the rings on both sides.
