  • An 8mm film I shot of the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix held at Mosport Park on September 23, 1973. The race was won by Peter Revson driving a McLaren M23 and as of 2015 was the last F1 race won by an American born driver. Emerson Fittipaldi was second and Jackie Oliver third. It's quite amazing to see how close you could get to the drivers and the track back then and also the lack of safety barriers. I love the "Lotus" spray painted on the garage door at 2:31.

I was there. Camped by Turn #2 and watched at Turn #3 where the track enters that small straight.
I also thought it was curious that you could get so close to the cars and drivers. I remember Jackie Stewarts helmet just sitting on a table in the garage about an arms length away and well within anyone's grasp. I resisted the urge.
Nice you got some pics of Francois Cevert. He would pass away from an accident practicing for the US GP a week or so later.
I got to see a great dust up between Jodie Scheckter and Cevert in Turn 2 after Scheckter ran Cevert' car into the guard rail. Cevert was ready to duke it out but Jodie was like 6'1" and towered over Francois. Scheckter just put his hand on Cevert's helmet and was safely out of range.
Great times. Thanks for the film.

I was there for the weekend, too. I have a great photo of Cevert being helped through the paddock by two mechanics after his accident with Scheckter. And less than two weeks later, he was gone.

When Cevert was killed through the fast esses at the Glen, he was being directly followed by Scheckter (who was rumoured to be his new teammate for 1974 season in Tyrrell in case Stewart would retire). Scheckter indeed was the first to get and stop at the wreck place. My personal opinion is that Albert Francois, specially after their "coming together" at Mosport, was trying to impress Jody, to teach him a lesson, right there, throught the fast esses.
Curious fact: Scheckter is Jewish (to date the only Jewish F1 World Champion, and the only African F1 WC as well, being born in SA), Cevert's dad was Jewish (Cevert's real name was Albert Francois Goldenberg).

This is an amazing glimpse into formula 1 history. Seeing these monsters sitting there ready to burst loose is incredible, all I can say is bravissimo!!

    Great upload, thanks.
Such a shame that Jackie's last ever race was ruined by the safety car shambles, and so sad that Cevert, looking so great here, badly damaged his ankles in the crash with Scheckter. There seems to be no film of this incident, though the general consensus seems to be that it was Jody's fault.
Many people, including me, suspect that Francois's tragic fatal crash two weeks later at the Glen was, if not caused, then contributed to by
his ankle injuries not quite being recovered from enough to enable him to have 100% control of the car. Of course we'll never know the truth of it.

I was at this race. 100,000 people attended in those days. I stood right behind the paddock in the area between the garages and the paddock.. There were no passes or rules there was just a wire separating the garages that you see in this video. I have a slide of Mrs Fittipaldi with a big hat on standing in the paddock a few feet away. I was 19 years old. A few weeks later my buddies and I went to the US Grand Prix in Watkins Glen where Cevert sadly died in practice. Stewart withdrew so this was his last race. "Time it was, and what a time it was..." What a great time to be young.

They use to get 100,000 people at the grand prix and can-am races. I know because I was stuck in the traffic on 35 and 115 going down to the 401. Took hours to get home but it was worth it.

I was there that day, what a blast from the past. Mosport was always packed with people everywhere. I remember when they built the new garages... Much better for the teams in bad weather and spectators could walk through close up... Just started racing myself, great times!

I too was at this race. I believe it was the year when Wayne Kelly died on the Saturday in a Formula Ford race at the exit of corner 1. Tragic. Sunday morning we woke to haevy fog. They allowed a few cars out for some running in a heavy pea soup fog. Brave drivers back then. Brought back some long forgotten memories of camping at the track with my Dad and brother.

0:18 - "2T" was Ronnie Peterson's "training" car, which was used for qualifying before he used the "2" car in the race. The race blighted by lap scoring errors and inconsistencies. Marshals and team managers then assembled for a three-hour meeting during which they tried to reconstruct the race from scratch by manually adding each individual lap time together.

And then Peter Revson was declared the winner with Emerson Fittipaldi 2nd, Jackie Oliver 3rd(In what would be his second and last Podium), Jean-Pierre Beltoise 4th, Jackie Stewart 5th(In what would be his last start), Howden Ganley(Who mantains he feels he won the race) was declared 6th(In what would be his fifth and last Points finish), James Hunt 7th, Carlos Reutemann 8th, Mike Hailwood 9th, Chris Amon 10th, Wilson "Wilsinho" Fittipaldi Júnior/Jr. 11th, Rolf Stommelen 12th, Denis "Denny" Hulme 13th, Tim Schenken 14th, Arturo Merzario 15th, Graham Hill 16th, George Follmer 17th and José Carlos Pace 18th

With Dad and Brother in tow, got to see this race(and I don't remember if it was the year AFTER or year before), and it was incredibly wet both years. Amazing to watch the cars going by on the straight in front of the pits, wondering just HOW they could see driving the death-mobiles. If memory serves correct Revson didn't make it much further in F1 due to accident my Dad told me.

on 11:39 you filmed the crucial momento that decided the race...placing the pace car in error in front of 7th Iso's Ganley, the immediate car in front of him were first Beltoise , 2nd Oliver and 3rd Revson (in fact, from a point of view of a Pace Car driver who possibly did not know the car porperly, misnderstood the leadership of a Beltoise Marboro BRM for a Iso marboro is a lot plausible mistake... ) and made all three first leaders free track to almost complete a lap in front of Emerson Fittipladi and Lauda hold on traffic who were 4th and 5th place - in yuor shot iit looked like they would d go to lap Ganley the suposed leader when the pace car arrived. So you see pace car, 7th Ganley, 8th Stewart, 4th Fittipladi, 9th Stommelen 10th Carlos pace and 5th Lauda e so on....this shot must be 38 or 39 lap . So., when the race started again, Fittipaldi was almost one lap behind the first three which were at the end of queu but even this way he managed to get the 2nd place just 32 seconds from Revson. Rememering Revson even was positioned on 14th even behing Ganley in the first part of the race so it was very possible he would not resist a Lotus attack

Fabulous history! Did you know that you captured racing's first deployment of the Safety Car, according to Wikipedia ? First during the parade lap (time: 6:35) and then after Cevert came together with Scheckter (time: 11:35). Evidently, the yellow Porsche 914 picked up a back-marker leading to a confused ending . Excellent post, sir. Thank you!

And, the Safety Car they selected was the one used during the driver parade lap by Carlos Pace, therefore it had the letters "PACE" stenciled on the door!

Yeah, back then you could get into the back of the garage and watch the mechanics work on the car, and often talk to them. Terrible line through turn two, everyone hanging on the outside
