In this case though the protagonist marries the youngest daughter instead of the eldest. Sure it makes more sense considering the youngest in both versions were clearly partly aware of his presence but marrying the eldest in 12 Princesses meant he'd get to inherit the kingdom.

lol a fairytale full of fantasies like dancing with the devils and flying on broomsticks and the first thing you gotta say is that. I don't think that was the point at all.
I did a little bit of research after hearing this story. I found out that the reason the youngest got off scott-free is because she admitted to dancing with devils while her elder sisters denied everything, even if there's evidence against them. Just goes to show that lying about what you did (or didn't do in this case) would only get you into more trouble than admitting it
Well I guess if she admitted to her fault, that seems like she has a less chance of a harsh punishment. Bitter scolding but hey, at least she didn't deny her sins.
Now that you mentioned it, in the scene where the sheperd was explaining what happened to the king, the youngest daughter looked and acted ashamed, but the older two acted as though they didn't but you can see they were denying everything from their hair popping out of place.
I think the youngest didn’t get a punishment because only the eldest and the middle child dropped their spoon and fork at the devil place. So there was no evidence that the youngest had danced with devils which was the greatest sin. Going to the silver, gold, and diamond forests were forgivable but dancing with devils was not.
I wonder what kinds of STDs you get from "dancing with 12 devils" every night... XD yikes... sure anyone still 'wants' to marry that youngest daughter?
An interesting theory, and could be true. However, I've noticed a trend in these folktales that it's usually the youngest son/daughter that end up happily ever after with the protagonist at the expense of the rest. I think it has to do with the symbolism that youth equates to beauty and innocence. As it is further accentuated on this one when the elder daughters make fun of the youngest.
My people believed in witches and magicians and they were never burned, except the ones who are did "curses". But priests co-operated with good-magicians to catch them. Its complicated, our ancient paganism were fulfilled with similar creatures and persons like christianity. I have read a priests interwiev when he ask them why they call her "Babba Mary", and they answered " because she is beautyfull". But when i read a reporter's interwiev, they replied " Babba has nothing to do with Mary, except that she given birth to her too". 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think in the original story the youngest must have been the only one who apologized and that's why she doesn't get locked up. The other two get locked up for witchcraft

And I agree with those who said "dancing" is most likely an euphemism for something more serious, as usual in very old folk tales. The same goes for the 12 dancing princesses version.
Actually, it was said the traveling man married the eldest of the twelve sisters because the traveler used to be a soldier, and claimed himself to not be 'as young' anymore.
Plus she's always blonde. The youngest always seems to be blonde, even though most Hungarians aren't. It's pretty common to have 'golden haired' heroines in European folk tales because it's 'special,' but it would be a nice change if all the heroines of these tales weren't blonde.

As I agree the ending doesn't have a fair ending the reason could be that they are the older daughters and they know more as to not escape during the night, in the story it clearly shows how the youngest daughter knows less and is guided by the more mature sisters
the elder daughters were maybe old enough to know what they were getting into while the young one was still a child? ( you got married even in child age back then btw )
I was like "why is a german tale in the list of hungarian folk tales?" and then i realize how they come from similar cultural origins and used to be part one of kingdom/empire before things went haywire....yeah.
No, Germany and Hungary was never part of a same empire. Altough at the begining of the 15th century we had the same king, the countries were never united. On the other hand we were in a monarchy with Austria.
@@sharkstriker1 I agree, but if they had freedom they should not have used it to dance with devils. What I don't understand is why the youngest didn't get punished. That's just the way life works, do the crime pay the time
Alright, so this is pretty clearly ATU 306 (Twelve Dancing Princesses), but I'm seeing some interesting details here. Obviously the ending is the biggest difference to other versions I've seen, but this is one of the only ones I've seen that has the use of flying ointment. In European lore (and some parts of the US) "flying ointment" was a poisonous/hallucinogenic salve used in witchy ritual stuff. Although contrary to what fairy tales would have you believe, "flying" in this case was more like "astral projection".
Wait a minute. I have a book from my childhood which contains this story and there is no witch and broom and ointment and things like these in that. That version goes like this: there were three young man trying to find out where the girls are going every night. However, two of the three man felt asleep before getting a chance to see where they are going, because the girls gave them alcohol. Only the third one didn't fall asleep since he put a sponge under his mouth and poured the wine into it.
These stories are thousands of years old, they changed all the time as new versions where invented. It's how stories evolve over time, and how they stay alive.
This is basically a different version the the 12 dancing princesses, and my goodness a much darker version of it at that. The princesses were genuine bonafide witches in this one flying on brooms slathered in witch ointment (which according to folklore that I've read is made from the fat of murdered babies), dancing in hell with demons. There is honestly nothing redeemable about them as they seem to do all this willingly. Most versions I have heard of have the princesses usually naively tricked by monsters pretending to be handsome men or being controlled by them where they are in a trance like state and are unaware of the danger they are in. Both times they are at least semi innocent victims that have been mislead and need rescuing from their situation. Here they are active participants... also the youngest being nervous doesn't absolve her, I think she should have been locked up with her sisters.
Abi Farrell I’m inclined to agree with you in this particular case, since the narrator clearly states in the end that the slipper-tearing stopped completely, which implies one of two things (or possibly both): *(1) ::* The youngest princess only went along with her sisters’ nightly shenanigans out of pure peer pressure from her sisters, who more than likely bullied her into doing so (as evidenced by them laughing at her whenever she is frightened instead of showing any real concern for her), and/or *(2) ::* The shepherd was a good enough influence on the youngest princess that she ultimately changed her ways and was redeemed, unlike her sisters who presumably refused to change their ways and thus could no longer be trusted to wander freely at night. In either case, by all accounts, the king’s actions were a relatively fair and mild example of tough love that ultimately paid off, at least with respect to the youngest princess. And to be fair, that’s much more than what can be said for other versions of this story (which can range from the male lead refusing to marry the youngest princess because she had already danced with the demons, to the two older princesses (or even all three princesses in some versions) being convicted of witchcraft and burned at the stake).
OK from my understanding is that the 2 older sisters got in trouble because they lost their virginity to "he devils" (aka they dropped their spoon/fork) but the youngest didn't. Basically this story says that 3 chicks would sneak out at night, have some drinks, go clubbing at night with some dudes, two of them got laid, and when they were caught, the youngest was married off to some guy because not only did she not sleep around, she was obviously hesitant about the whole thing... and the older ones were locked in their room at night so they couldn't go sleeping around anymore.... is this accurate? Lol.
In fact, it's about the witch girls going into a trance, experiencing visions. The ointment (witch ointment, flying ointment) they put on themselves contains plants with hallucinogenic effects. It was believed that in such altered states of consciousness they could contact spirits, devils and fly to the other world where these beings dwell. As a Hungarian witch, I love these stories.
This reminds me of a fairytale from my childhood, instead of 3 daughters the king had like 12 daughters and the same thing with the shoes happened. They didn’t go into silver or gold forests tho, they only ran away into a forest and danced the night away, a shepherd did follow them and he married the eldest since she knew he was following them from the beginning and was the only one to admit to it.
So the reason the youngest wasn't punished was because she came clean unlike her sisters but is there any evidence that the youngest never wanted to join her sisters in the first place? She seemed very worried the whole time like she was scared of getting caught, a lot of people are nervous about that when they do something bad for the first time. and when they reached the palace to dance with the devils, she looks like she's cowering.
I heard somewhere that the reason why she got away free because she admitted that what she and her sisters is true while the sisters denied, despite the evidence presented to the king.
So basically, because of their father sheltering them and keeping them locked up, they rebelled and partied. So his response is to shelter and lock them up even further. A+ parenting.
It never really said he was harsh with them. And it’s horrible of them to go out and dance with devils. He only kept them locked at night as a punishment. I don’t think the king was in the wrong
I noticed in these tales, a lot of times the enchanted items are made from gold, silver and diamond. It's a recurring theme. Makes sense that those would be very valuable materials.
Interesting, in the story I heard growing up (from my Hungarian grandmother) the youngest girl never went along to dance, and so she wasn't punished and married the shepherd.
I watched Grimm,s Fairy Tale Classics’ version years ago. In that one, they tapped the floor in their bedroom and stairs showed up vs them flying out with a witch. I like both.
I noticed an interesting detail when it comes to magic items that come in sets of three in Hungarian stories. If the items involve a male character they come in copper, then silver, then gold, and if they involve a female character they come in silver, then gold, then diamond. Why is that?
It's not just a hungarian thing. Things in fairytales usually come in sets of three. There are usually also three allies, three events, three daughters... It's called "Rule of three" and it's everywhere in storytelling, you probably didn't even notice. But look it up and you'll see how many things use the number three even today. The reason for that is because "Two is a pair, three is a pattern". It's a very ergonomic number in stories. Down to the structure of beginning, middle and end. Simply put, two things are often too little and four things tend to become redundant. So storytellers often settle on three, just enough not to bore the audience.
@@d4n737 I wasn’t referring to the number of items, I was referring to what they are made of. Male character: copper, silver, gold Female character: silver, gold, diamond
Mu mu Booger i don't know maybe because the guy wanted to marry her. In hungarian folk tales the youngest sisters are always the most innocent, prettiest girls... idk it's weird
Simple, he didn’t rat out the one he liked for he didn’t provide evidence she danced with the devils. He only provided evidence that she was along for the ride but didn’t indulge in hedonism, tongue in cheek meaning for “dancing with devils.”
Mu mu Booger I’m guessing the older sisters kind of forced their sister to come along, which is why when the shepherd snapped the branches and the sound was made, she was the only one was frighted. When he gave his tale, she was the only one who showed remorse for the deeds. So in turn she was let off.

I still think it would've been wiser of the king to punish all three princesses, since they were all seen by their spy at all 3 forbidden places . Otherwise, the only lesson learned by the princesses is that doing wrong is only acceptable if you're the youngest child . In other words, the king showed favoritism to the youngest by only punishing the 2 eldest .
I remember this story... although I remember that there was a prince and a soldier who tried first and failed because the princesses put something to sleep with in their food, So in the morning the king sent them to the dungeon, a witch helped the shepherd with a cloak of invisibility and something else that I don't remember...but I do remember that the prize was to marry one of the princesses

She married a shepard
That sound's like punishment enough
@@walleras but the Shepherd was hot and intelligent though lol😂
@@moonlight3589 And dirt poor
I'm starting to see a pattern.
There is no such a thing as German tale. There a Bavarian, Saxon etc. tales.
What a crime, being a free woman
they were most likely young children / teens tho...
but old enough to get married it seems... Oh well
krisanthemum H.
While it's okay to be free, abusing that isn't right. Freaking dancing in what seems to be hell definitely isn't a good idea XD
Different time period. It was most likely written when witchcraft and women were both very misunderstood and taboo.
@@sharkstriker1 I agree, but if they had freedom they should not have used it to dance with devils. What I don't understand is why the youngest didn't get punished. That's just the way life works, do the crime pay the time
Princess: welp I feel like clubbing
Princess: *TURNING UP- ON A TUSEDAY!*
That ending was epic though
And here is the evidence *_Your majesty_*
I love the designs of the princesses! They're my favorite of these Hungarian Folktales.
I don't 😢😢😢
Wait a minute. I have a book from my childhood which contains this story and there is no witch and broom and ointment and things like these in that. That version goes like this: there were three young man trying to find out where the girls are going every night. However, two of the three man felt asleep before getting a chance to see where they are going, because the girls gave them alcohol. Only the third one didn't fall asleep since he put a sponge under his mouth and poured the wine into it.
These stories are thousands of years old, they changed all the time as new versions where invented. It's how stories evolve over time, and how they stay alive.
I dont know why I always end up watching these folk tales at midnight
The drawings/ art style are getting better
He rubbed ointment on himself... and his stick.
The art is so imaginative in this I love it
I’ll volunteer to dance with those handsome he-devils if the princesses can’t! I just love this story.
I really like the design of the 3 princesses :)
This is a version of the 12 princesses story.😊 I've noticed 3 is a very common them in the Hungarian tales.
Either that or they're dancing in a magical place that seems perfectly innocent-- certainly not _Hell_
I think the king realize the younger one was being pressured because the moment or sisters got locked up she fucken stopped
Abi Farrell I’m inclined to agree with you in this particular case, since the narrator clearly states in the end that the slipper-tearing stopped completely, which implies one of two things (or possibly both):
*(1) ::* The youngest princess only went along with her sisters’ nightly shenanigans out of pure peer pressure from her sisters, who more than likely bullied her into doing so (as evidenced by them laughing at her whenever she is frightened instead of showing any real concern for her), and/or
*(2) ::* The shepherd was a good enough influence on the youngest princess that she ultimately changed her ways and was redeemed, unlike her sisters who presumably refused to change their ways and thus could no longer be trusted to wander freely at night.
The youngest didn’t get punished because she snitched on them and others denied everything even though there was proof
Lol.
I'll be honest I thought he'd be more angry that they were dancing with devils
In fact, it's about the witch girls going into a trance, experiencing visions. The ointment (witch ointment, flying ointment) they put on themselves contains plants with hallucinogenic effects. It was believed that in such altered states of consciousness they could contact spirits, devils and fly to the other world where these beings dwell. As a Hungarian witch, I love these stories.
I would love to hear stories from a real Hungarian witch! Sounds amazing
As a what?!
I heard somewhere that the reason why she got away free because she admitted that what she and her sisters is true while the sisters denied, despite the evidence presented to the king.
she's simply blond and is the youngest.
Love the art style in this one :D
Moral of the story:
never trust your own daughters because they might go out partying with devils
Interesting, in the story I heard growing up (from my Hungarian grandmother) the youngest girl never went along to dance, and so she wasn't punished and married the shepherd.
The girls be out partying
Starry - P I’ve seen you on another vid
Theres a huge role of unfair favoritism at play here dont you think??!??
I love folk tale animations so much 😊❤
I really love this channel. No "I'll cut off your head if you don't find out where my daughters go."
So this is basically a Hungarian version of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses"
Cool.
why are these so interesting
out of 200 youtube videos and one of them is one of these stories i’m 100% watching one of these
like they’re relaxing
I watched Grimm,s Fairy Tale Classics’ version years ago. In that one, they tapped the floor in their bedroom and stairs showed up vs them flying out with a witch. I like both.
Thia channel is my bedtime stories. Love the music and narator’s voice
your tales never fail to amaze me!
I did /not/ expect the devils twist in the middle.
Why is no one talking about how frickin strong that shepherd boy must be?
I swear its like he's making up the dialogue as the movie goes along. Its so rushed!
I love it lmao!
Male character: copper, silver, gold
Female character: silver, gold, diamond
Because diamonds are girls best friend’s
Because diamonds are girls best friend’s 😂
“Satan’s dance club”
I like that.
I can relate this to 12 dancing princess and why did the two sisters get locked in?
Mu mu Booger i don't know maybe because the guy wanted to marry her. In hungarian folk tales the youngest sisters are always the most innocent, prettiest girls... idk it's weird
Simple, he didn’t rat out the one he liked for he didn’t provide evidence she danced with the devils. He only provided evidence that she was along for the ride but didn’t indulge in hedonism, tongue in cheek meaning for “dancing with devils.”
I think they got locked each night so that they can't go to the devil palaces then...
Mu mu Booger I’m guessing the older sisters kind of forced their sister to come along, which is why when the shepherd snapped the branches and the sound was made, she was the only one was frighted. When he gave his tale, she was the only one who showed remorse for the deeds. So in turn she was let off.
Because they didn't show remorse for their actions and the king probably thought they were being a bad influence for their younger sister
3:03 "The smallest prince" Good job there. XD
Okay why did the two oldest get punished and the youngest get rewarded she was just as guilty as them
He didnt provide evidence that she danced with the devils as well thats why she was let off easy
potato lover moral of the story, sin away, as long as you don’t get caught.
@@alcyonae exactly lol
@Mullerornis yeah , also notice how the blonde ,blue eyed, pale youngest daughter is always the good one ?
@@hanim1001 ikr?....even when i was a kid, i noticed this too after reading lots of fables and folks tales from different countries.
Great story - the daughters were witches and indulged in intoxicating behavior - dancing with the devils was creepy. Glad the king caught them,
I'm noticing that the blonde and light haired people are always seen as the good ones.
1:23 I just had to pause now LMAO what kind of dad letting a random man slept in the same room with his THREE daughters?! And a King who couldn't afford his daughters' footwear anymore... You're not a king anymore pfft... Not hating. Just.... This is too funny roflmao
This is the best channel i’ve subscribed!!
This story reminds me of The Twelve Dancing Princesses or The Shoes That Were Worn to Pieces.
Man what a downer, those girls were tearing it up every night, having the time of their life and he just had to ruin it.
This reminds me of the 12 dancing princesses.
I've learned a valuable lesson.. If you're the youngest you can get away with shit just by sitting down and looking pretty
Oh I remember this on Nickelodeon! It was a story on Grimm's Fairy Tales!
Absolutely love the fact that i found this channel
Certainly the spiciest version of the twelve dancing princesses that I’ve ever heard
Such gorgeous animation! Thanks for uploading these videos!
I love how these shorts are traditionally animated-it’s such a rare treat to see that these days! 😊
*sees that she is involved with witches and demons*
Perfect wife material
You know, it's weird that in all of these dancing princesses stories, the king himself never thought to just stay up and watch.
