    When I think about Latin and how "basic" it's sounds seem to me, I can't imagine anyone casually speaking it every day, it just sounds so rigid in my head. But, hearing you read it like this, fluidly, and with accurate pronunciation, it makes the ancient Romans seem a lot less ancient. Makes me realize that we're not really all that different.

      for someone who speaks portuguese, italian and spanish is much easier to pronounce Latin,because almost all sounds still exist in those languages. french maybe might have problem to pronounce the "r" .

      To the contrary, I don't actually think it has many *uncommon* sounds. Perhaps the only one that comes to mind is /h/, although broadly similar glottal type sounds are very common.

      You all must remember, this is CLASSICAL Latin, this version was the language of the upper epsilon and the clergy, the common man would not speak in this fashion, instead, they would have spoken a regional form of vulgar Latin, which would eventually evolve into the romance languages.

      Hi Chen. Macrons never really existed; they are just a tool for beginners in Latin. On the other hand, quantity is a fundamental element in Latin poetry, where macrons and other diacritics can be of great help.

    • @speedyx3493
      @speedyx3493 Рік тому

      @@AlexMarcelo I know I'm kinda late but for future readers: that's not entirely true. Romans DID indicate long, it wasn't that common but we do have examples of it's usage dating back to antiquity. They didn't necesarlly use macrons as we now it today like "ā" but they used something we would call an acute accent today like "á". That accent marks were very subtle so a lot of them dissapeared from inscriptions and manusctipts as time went by and that makes it seem like they were only used very rarely which isn't the case.
      Marcus Quintilianus wrote about it in his Institutio Oratoria and encouraged people to use them while discouraging the "ancient/obsolete" practice of indicating it by writing long vowels with 2 graphemes like "aa"

    The pronunciation is alright. There is far to much emphasis on the rolling 'r'. I am presuming that is from your nationality and native language. A lot of study has been put into finding how Latin was pronounced. Roman as well as 'Church Latin' the 'r's were tapped. Some other letters are also pronounced different as well.

      Good catch! You're half right; only final Ms nasalised their preceding vowel. Ns also nasalised their vowels, but only before fricative consonants. The nasalisation also lengthened the preceding vowel if it was short:
      e.g.
      nōn = [ˈnoːn]
      dēns = [ˈdẽːs]
      dentem = [ˈdɛn.tẽː]
      Phonetically the rule is written like this:
      /m/→[◌̃ː]/__#
      →[m]/elsewhere
      /n/→[◌̃ː]/__C [+fricative]
      →[n]/elsewhere

    Constantly, on every single Latin video, there is always one thumbs down, no matter wether it be Virgil, homer the bible etc. Who is this person? Do they just seek out Latin videos to give them a thumbs down???? Every single one. All with one thumbs down.

    Why did Latin repeat the same mistake of Greek, and invent useless letters like X and QU?
    And I think QU is [kʷ], not [kw].

    • @LAMarshall
      @LAMarshall 6 років тому +2

      You're right, Qu should be /kʷ/, not /kw/.
      The Latin alphabet was originally adopted from the Etruscan alphabet which used X, K, C, Q, etc. (and the Etruscans got their alphabet from the Greeks, go figure).
      Originally, the Romans used K before A, (hence why the letter is called kā, and not kē) before it fell out of fashion, because, as you said, it's pretty useless. X however stayed, presumably because it took up less space than CS or KS when carving a monument.
      C and Q were used to distinguish minimal pairs with V, since V was used for both the vowel /u/ _and_ the consonant /w/. Therefore, CV represents /ku/, whereas QV represents /kʷ/. Compare _CVI_ /kui/ and _QVI_ /kʷiː/. This is also why 'horse' - is spelled EQVVS, not ECVVS. Because it was pronounced /ˈe.kʷus/, not /ˈe.kuːs/.
