I am a structural engineer with a PhD in offshore structures and 30 years experience in the private offshore energy sector. Offshore wind in Australia is complete insanity.
@ because any maintenance work will be ridiculously expensive. Any major maintenance will require a Derrick barge. There are none in Australia. The nearest is 7,000 km away (SE Asia). 18 days to Australia, 18 days back at $750k a day. That excludes work on site. You cannot assume energy types are directly interchangeable across continents. Also Australia does not have any large dry docks which means floating offshore wind turbines and hulls will be near impossible to construct here.
As an Australian who has lived in Europe now for years, I can tell you that the wind generators which litter this once-beautiful countryside lie dormant for much of the time due insufficient wind. Many fail and the blades are feathered, rendering them useless at producing electricity, although the running costs, including rent and maintenance, continue. When they do operate, they kill birds, provide a serious hazard for crop dusters, and further, the installed base only contributes 9% of this country's energy production at full-tilt (which is very rare). They are costly to build and install; the land on which they are constructed must be either purchased or rented. In the case of terrestrial installations, the land is usually either farm or vacant land, and the investment's worth cannot be linked to the land's current utilization of energy production, it will appear as an asset on the balance sheet, but it will prove a poor investment simply due to its nature. Marine installations are even worse, they are extremely expensive to build and maintain due to the harsh environment. That expensive maintenance is also dangerous to maintenance workers, and the whole installation is hazardous to certain marine life. Wind generators have a limited life, and require regular costly and dangerous maintenance including lubricating oil replenishment. The end-of-life processes are not clearly defined, and as with their resource sapping and costly contruction, deconstruction is problematic and expensive. They are clearly not a viable solution even though the magic of "energy for free" is alluring. The politicians in Australia who are championing wind energy as a "magic wand solution" for energy production, are a ridiculously impractical group of under-education and under-informed people, they view this as an "experiment" at the taxpayer's expense and have not undertaken sufficient reseach on viability even though much data is now available. Don't go there!
Thanks, agree totally! They are the environmental and financial hazards from construction to maintenance to disposal once the used by dates are reached, not to say they are the graveyards for birds, the killers of whales, the wreckers of farmlands and the biggest eyesore to beautiful countries. The Australian government is outrageously crazy and stupid to be an activist for this so called 'renewable' energy.
This is the difference between Nuclear and renewables. With Nuclear a clear pathway from commissioning to decommissioning is registered and costed. Renewables at best are very blurry and all costs are hidden from public scrutiny. There is NO clean-up and or removal strategy process in place All removal and replacements will be at the taxpayers expense. Once foreign entities have recouped monies and made an enormous profit they simply walk away, your problem now.

A professor at Edinburgh university, has done a detailed analysis of offshore windfarm opex. The figures show, that after 15 years, they become uneconomic to maintain. The solution, is to scrap or be granted higher subsidies.
A bit like the desalination plant, cost a heap and returned very little. This cost $1.8 billion in 2010 and with very high maintenance costs. Desalination has the potential to increase fossil fuel dependence, increase greenhouse gas emissions, and exacerbate climate change if renewable energy sources are not used for freshwater production. But we did it anyway and we now have 270 of them in all sizes. We have D graders running the country.
This is spot on. Our nuclear is cheaper than floating offshore and that’s on the basis of the hugely over engineered and cost laden nuclear being built here. In more sensible parts of the world floating offshore could be twice as expensive and still only works when the wind blows.
The Labor government appears to have advisors that no more than anyone else in the world and this will most likely continue until money runs out and prudent, competent, informed, and a realistic approach to engineering and financial viability is forced on the government as money that can just be thrown around will eventually run out.

Where are these going to be built ? at 10,000 tonne ship takes a large skilled labour force ( which has gone eg Newcastle shipbuilding). Offshore supply/lifting vessels - none in Australia - these have to come from Asia. This is green-wishing at ludicrous level 10. If Bowen was serious - we'd try build 1 or 3 and realize just how challenged we are.

Offshore wind is typically more constant and stronger than onshore wind so the offshore wind turbines make more power than the same wind turbine would do onshore. Even so, offshore wind farms planned in the US to behave as a scheduled power station are 100% instantly backed up by natural gas turbine generators needing to run at 70% fuel consumption for high availability making little electricity and unable to use a second cycle of steam generation to add 50% higher efficiency. It can use about same amount of natural gas, possibly less, to simply make all the electricity with a natural gas combined cycle plant running the natural gas turbines at high efficiency 85% output where they can make full use of steam cycle adding another 50% efficiency. It's not the percentage of wild AC the public power grid is having to support from wind turbine and solar voltaic generated electricity that is substantially important, but its fuel savings, which is little to non. In the US the advertised fuel savings for supporting the wild AC from wind turbine and solar voltaic generated electricity by the electric utility grid is 1% each. That number is likely rounded up significantly. The practical use for wind turbine and solar voltaic generated electricity is for maintaining electrical energy storage such as charging storage batteries or working with something similar such as hydropower. The cheapest incremental electricity is from hydropower and nuclear power. Second to those in the US would be a new ultra supercritical clean coal plant burning high BTU bituminous coal at a predicted crossover fueling cost with natural gas priced at $0.80 per million BTUs in 2022. US natural gas was priced at an offseason wholesale price in early summer 2024 of $2.50 per million BTUs, three times the fueling cost of the coal plant. This is about the cheapest natural gas would be expected to ever be without economic collapse. Winter peak natural gas wholesale prices can be several times higher. The US has some of the lowest cost natural gas in the world. It is not accurate to state residential electricity cost is greatly the cost of maintaining the power grid. In the US on average only 38% of the generated electricity reaches the residential electric power meter. 62% of the generated electricity on average is lost to grid resistance. A little less than $0.03 per kWh is average for US midwestern wholesale electricity scheduled 24 hours in advance. That costs $0.03/.38 = $0.078 at the residential meter. Our Cumberland Indiana residential electricity in 2020 was priced at $0.10 per kWh. That cost verses sale price difference has to maintain the power grid and make some profit. Internally generated electricity should be significantly cheaper.
It’s ridiculous to think this project is viable, or even achievable. How can Chris Bowen be given so much free rein, surely he has had to seek engineering advice and approval?
Australia has a massive dead heart. Assuming green tech is viable, and I’m not suggesting it is, why would a country with a low value agricultural space require any offshore real estate to build green tech. Build literally anywhere else where it doesn’t reliably rain and freeze every year, and also consists of undulating terrain. Aka low value agricultural space.
So where is the other expert point of view on this issue? Or is that not the Credlin Sky business model? "Great to hear it from an expert" she says, but she won't put a wind farm engineer on the program.

One man’s insanity (that’s most of us) is another’s opportunity. Follow the money!
Christopher Bowen will run wires from his own body but it will drain him dry
They could spend this money on our first nuclear plant instead with guaranteed results
So where is the other expert point of view on this issue? Or is that not the Credlin Sky business model? "Great to hear it from an expert" she says, but she won't put a wind farm engineer on the program.
O'Hughee can build annee thing. & this fella izs correct it doesn't make cent's. 1 might be able too put a Wind Generator on a 1000$ note though. Le 1 that WORK's . LOL.
These will be monuments to the stupidity of Bowen and Albo.
Are these the type of monuments that come out the south end of a north facing cow.
Lets build generators that rust and are impossible to service
Off shore windfalls. there goes our Commercial and Recreational Fishing Industry. Threat to migration of Humpback Whales
big government means in the end that they alone are driving the economy and commercial considerations go out the window - the only consideration is the lobbyists
Even Greenpeace& Co are gonna deaf out this Nonsense. And wth projected customer Energy Bills a whole lot x2,not a lot spare to bankroll such as Greenpeace…
Lol retired gas industry darling butthurt by wind farms because it might hurt his buddies companies and his own investments. Sounds like heaps unbiased advice.
Oh no the whales might bump into them
