Difference between cosmetology & esthetics?? I can save by 50% on tuition by NOT wasting my own time learning about hair!! Hahaha 😂😆 I’ve only ever cared about brows and makeup and of course, SKIN!
TRULY! I went to Cosmo school and realized everything that kept me engaged had to do with skin and makeup.. 🙄 a waste of time when I could've just gone to esthetician school
I'm a high school student is there anything I have to REALLY pay attention to so I can be a better esthectician I already pay attention but does like any math go into this do I have to be really good at reading how can I start getting better know while I'm in highschool?
Thank you SO MUCH for making this video!! I just graduated from an Esthetics program and passed my state board exams, now looking for a job. It’s awesome to get some insight because it really is different out in the real world vs being in school
Leesly B it depends on where you go to school, state funded programs are definitely a better option as far as price goes (I wish I would have done that) but tuition for a “name brand” school is anywhere from 10-13K
I'm going to Pivot Point on July 21st and I can't believe I actually know what I want in life. I was a dental assistant liked what I did but I wasn't passionate about it. I'm not sure what path I'll take as a esthethician but I changed jobs to go to school. It lowered my pay changing jobs but that's fine bc I know at the end is worth it 💙
Do it girl! I’m starting school December 9 at the best beauty school in my area for the esthetician program which also includes make up along with skin care. It’s seven months long since I’m taking night classes and they also have nail tech courses which I am considering taking after I finish my esthetician program. You might get a lot of people talking shit the estheticians don’t make much money, but of course it all depends on the location from what I’ve researched and also I googled if they were in demand and their growth is predicted to be 12% over the next I think 10 years? My plan is to eventually take the estheticians program, possibly the nail technician program, and then continue education classes/seminars and possibly some seminars on how to start your own business so I could possibly own my own salon one day. All in all, if you have a dream go for it!
I’m 30 and was thinking about it! I just lost my job, and it sucks, not having anything to back it up. I would love to keep in contact to support one another.
I'm also 36 single with five kids and I work third shift. I started in August, finish in January. Its hard but it's so worth it but if it's something you're really have a passion for. I say go for it!
New subscriber I’ve been so passionate about skin for so long you’ve inspired me to look back into it and just see what happens the feeling of taking care of yourself from the inside out is the greatest feeling I love making others feel special :)
New subscriber! I start esthetician classes in a October. I have been in the medical field for 20 years, and skincare has always been one of my favorites.
Hey ! I’m from Chicago as well and will be starting my esthetician school journey very soon ! In a few weeks actually. I love how informal your video was! Yes it’s still 750 hours . But I’m excited ! Hopefully this takes me somewhere exciting I’m ready
Vanessa DelToro mine is 6 months . I actually start tomorrow mine is 6 months because I’m fulltime so I’ll be dont quicker. Part time can span out to be 7-9 months
I'm from Chicago and i'm considering going to esthetician school. I need some advices how to choose the school, what should i know picking one? I would apreciated any recommendations!
Raquel, you are amazing!! This video is incredibly insightful and I truly appreciate your honesty. I’m manifesting it right now, I will become an esthetician. I have site tours set up this week and I am even more excited about this next chapter in my life after watching your video!!
I am so glad I came across this vid because I recently realized this is my calling after a crazy/uneducated experience I had with retinol and other active ingredients. Lol it was a whole mess. But in educating myself in how to nurse my skin back to health I became absolutely obsessed with skincare, specifically skin science/medical side of the industry. I hope you do more vids like these. Bout to go stalk your channel lol. Thanks!!
I currently work in a spa as front desk and spray tanning. The owner and the ladies there have pushed me into going to school. I start in August! It definitely helps that have already had my foot in the door. Selling is the truth and taking great pics to help sell yourself!
I really want to be an aesthetician but there’s one school that’s 2-3 bus ride away that only do cosmetology and another that’s even further 🥺🥺omg I don’t know what to do especially how my life is setup .
Thanks so much for all the videos! I’ve been watching and learning. I’m beginning my schooling at Aveda for Esthetician. I uploaded a 🎥 about orientation day!
Wow! I’m so glad you were inspired to make a video, because tomorrow I have my first interview for an esthetician job! I need to sleep but I will so be watching this again to soak it in better tomorrow. Thank you so much ✨
Raquel From Inside Out AHH I DIDNT SEE THIS till now! Thank you so much! It didn’t go the greatest, but you and your videos are still so helpful and inspiring. 😊
I went to a beauty school here in my town and toured. The reviews were the best as well as the price! I got out on the waitlist and I just said yes to take the spot! I’m nervous as hell! I’ve been researching and watching videos and trying to get a better grasp. I guess I’m scared to fail! I love all things beauty. Are you happy? Are you glad you have experienced all the jobs you’ve had? Would you change anything?
My daughter wants to learn eye lash extensions, facials and lip injections could her going for an esthetician be enough or does she need different certificates thank u
First, she needs to to be a licensed esthetician to practice lashes and facials. She will learn facials in esthetician school. You’ll likely need a lash certification to learn lashes since most schools don’t teach it. Lash training is usually a weekend course. Only nurses and docs can do injections.
Great question! If you have a license you can own your own spa practicing your craft in brick and mortar or mobile business. However, I would suggest investing in additional insurance to make sure you and your business are protected. Having your own business is a great way to ensure you get 100% of your commission the key is marketing yourself, getting great reviews, and establishing repeat clientele. A lot of estheticians start out in salons and spas and once they feel they have established themselves and their reputation they often move on to renting a room in a salon or spa or even create a mobile business. Good luck with whichever you choose. 🤗💕
What trade shows do you think are worth the trip/time/investment? Also what is your international esthetic perspective? Like how does international schooling and common practice compare?
You are so funny.....I like your way of talking. I have skin issues for so many years. I thought of doing esthetician course just to know about skincare, skin types and knowledge about ingredients so is there any online course for esthetician.
I'm 34, in the west suburbs of Chicago and currently looking at schools. Looking into making esthetics second mode of income. I'm still on the fence on if its a good move
I appreciated your content, and personality! Thank you for taking the time to be real about the future prospects for an esthetician. I will begin a 6 month/full time program in Texas, and I am super excited to begin my education. I have already researched clinics (I want to be a medical esthy) that I aspire to work in, and have looked into the skill sets the current team has. I just want to be able to stand out more than other applicants, and don't really know how to besides gaining the basic license, and hopefully get a high recommendation from my educators. Any advice?
This video was so helpful! Thank you so much! I really love skincare so much and am looking into esthetician programs near me. I found one closeby that offers a combined course on general esthetics as well as electrolysis and laser work! I hope to work in a medi spa or under a dermatologist someday
Wow!! You are the most honest I’ve heard yet! Thank you I’m over 50 and considering going to aesthetician school. What’s your opinion for ladies over 50?
I'm thinking on going to esthetician school as a career change, this video is the most helpful I've found, especially for the skills you mention. My interest really is face treatments and I am thinking on getting esthetician license also because I would like to become a skincare formulator and have my own product line. Do you think getting an esthetician license is necessary or helpful? or should I look otherway? Thank you!
Great question. So, at my school they didn't teach Brazilians but I asked me teacher if we could have time to practice Brazilians. I believe we watched a "how to" video and worked on each other. This was years ago hopefully they teach them now in class.
Im 50 been doing hair for over 20 yrs and want to work in a clean fresh environment away from hair..im licensed to do skin but what refresher courses should i do.!?
There are other avenues in the industry you can take as an esthetician where you don't have to do facials or massages. My first job after beauty school was a eye brow artist for Lancome, I never had to do facials nor massage. Also, the massages you do are mostly the face, neck and decollate not like a full body massages.
I know for me I'm going to attend a black esthetician and skin therapist retreat and conference in Houston. So I'm going to sit in on classes that are more "aesthetic" rather than "esthetic".... taking classes and getting certifications in things like microneedling, dermaplaning, and maybe even a laser class so you have those credentials to add on your resume to make it more appealing to med spas. I know when you work under a physician and they really like you they'll even pay for your training and you get to do more under them.
You usually have to take separate classes, like where I live there is a whole separate school that has specific classes geared towards medical esthetician, you usually have to pay out of pocket for the classes but is really worth it to expand your services. Disclaimer: Some things you won’t be able to do unless you are a medical professional depending on the state.
Once you have your esthetician license you just need to further you education maybe take courses on all the services they are providing I don’t know how much your school teaches you but your just going to have to continue your education. I Would say get your rn license as well or even bsn. I’m in esthi school in Atlanta and I want to work more on the medical side too once I’m done. I’m going to get my bsn and maybe work under a doctor but then it’s a lot with that as well or ask your instructor my teacher is so helpful with everything.
Depends on the school you go to. I went to Pivot Point Academy and they did focus a small portion of our time on sales. However, a lot of this training you’ll receive will be on the job. My #1 tip for being really good at sales is know the products your selling extremely well and your clients needs. There is no need to “sell” if your educating your clients and addressing their skincare needs.
My test here in Pennsylvania did ask me those qs 😩 I need to pass the test I have failed and I’m very upset it’s my dream to pass and idk why I can’t pass
I wanna do the program my community college offers it but it's a long wait list and I wonder if going to a private school would be the best thing for me.
Giiiirrrrllll get on that waiting list. 😆 Private college tuition/ student loans is something serious to consider. Most private colleges are for pay and not accredited. Community colleges are way cheaper and is accredited.
Hi my name is ray and I’m not sure if I should drop out of college and go to beauty school?I’m scare to make the same mistake my father did when he was my age (I’m 19 years old)!
I just randomly watched a video of yours from 2016 “Shaving Your Face”... I was watching organization videos????? I clicked on your thumbnail and here you are🤗🤗🤗🤗 I’m a cosmetologist by the way!
Does the school really matter ? The community college where I’m at is offer the class for 1,700 for everything but there is another school that’s is offering the class for 7,000 for everything
The school isn’t as important if you’re willing to put that extra coin into continued education. The places that will employ you wants to know your skills are on point! So take extra classes so you can add them to your resume.
what is the going pay when coming fresh out of school in your view as an esthetician also I would like to know had you thought about going back to get the instructors license so therefore you are paid a stable salary just to teach this thanks for the video
Is there a lot of chemistry involved? I am terrible in those kind of classes, but I love skin and makeup! I’ve been into skincare since I was 14 but i’m not sure if i’m going to be good enough.
Its usually goes per service not hours! So whatever service she performs she makes a commission off that service (a percentage from the price of the service). If she goes 2 hours without a guest they don't get paid for that time. At least that's how it works at some spa's I've worked at in the past.
Do you wear a uniform or scrubs? I’ve heard of estheticians not wearing scrubs and some that do. I’m will be starting esthetician program in 2 weeks and I’m so excited/nervous and just wanna be informed. Thank you!!
So i want to be a lash artist and microblading tech. Do you suggest an esthetician license for that or would i have to have a different type of education and license?
Esthetician license for sure! I am an Esthetician in Ohio and a certified lash artist. It's cheaper to go to Esthetician school than cosmetology and most spas will pay to help continue your education to get certified in lashes! Most spas will split it with you 50/50. It varies in every state so I would make sure to check with your state board and confirm that an Esthetician can perform those services!
There is no need to go to school twice especially since your license will require continual education hours to maintain your license. Those credit hours can be in the form of advancing your skills through any accredited learning that is available in your area.
Where can I find laser classes? How can I become in a Medical Esthetician? I don’t know anything about the field. I want to become in a esthetician once I finish my GED. And I’m felling very attracted by this market.
Iam in houston texas had my liscense and let them expire and wanting to renew is there somewhere i can go just to get fresher course i ordered books and iam studying now want to take exam in October
Hi Victoria, you can only practice in the state you are licensed in. Other states have varied credit hour requirements that you might have to earn to get licensed.
May seem like a strange question but i've always wondered: when you're in school and you're practicing your hands on skills, is it 100% mandatory to have students practice on you as well? Is there a waver you can sign? I would be too anxious that someone would (unintentionally) eff up my face, especially because it's so sensitive! Also thank you for your extremely thought-out video, I learned a lot!
It hard to make a general statement about how other programs run, however at the school I attended (Pivot Point Academy) we practiced on each other. It's important for to understand the experience for the client perspective.
I'm 38 and have always wanted to be an esthetician but I worry it's too late to make a career change now, would you reccomeded entering the field at this age or should I stick with my current career of dental hygiene?
That's a choice no one can make for you but you love. I will say this though consider how your lifestyle is and the pay you are looking to have to sustain it or create a different one. Starting out as a new Esthetician is like many careers you have to work your way up, but ultimately it's all about what brings you happiness. Being an Esthetician can be fun and rewarding, especially when you see how your expertise helps your clients. Best wishes in whatever you choose. 🤗💕
Is a esthetician the same as massage therapist and/or facialist? Are they all basically the same thing? Or is an esthetician just the main thing and the others are just different parts of it?
An esthetician is a skincare specialist where as a massage therapist is a body worker. They often work at spas and salons hand and hand but separate services. You need separate educations and licenses for both and it's highly recommended that you acquire both for lucrative possibilities in your career, but its perfectly fine to just have the one.
If you want to be an esthetician then you only need to attend a program for esthetics. Cosmetology programs are for hair stylist. hope that helps love 💕
Its different depending on the state you live in, but most states require medical Estheticians to have an Esthetician license as well as an education in the medical field (RN, NP). If you just have an Esthetician license you might only be able to assist medical Estheticians and not be able to perform the treatments yourself.
what’s your take on accredited vs non accredited schools? I’m in San Diego and we honestly don’t have great beauty schools here the only one I’ve found with pretty good reviews in non accredited but I don’t want that to cause any issues with getting jobs in the future, thanks so much!
This is a great question! Accredited beauty schools have a greater advantage VS non-accredited beauty schools for a few reasons. Employers take into account your skill level. Accredited schooling offers a curriculum that is set to the national industry standard that isn't always the case with non-accredited schooling. Accredited Schools often have access to financial aid to assist with paying for your eduction. Also, if you want to update your skills you might have to start all over again rather than building onto your credit hours.
latavia nicole yes! It’s definitely easier for you during services, but safer for your client so they don’t get poked/hurt. In school we had to keep our nails short because we do facials with massages. :)
Such a great question! Here are some of my suggestion - Is there a student placement program? - Are internships available? - What sets this schools apart from others? - Will I learn how to preform Brazilians wax in class? - Are there any post education available? - Are there addition technical skills I will learn at this school such as Laser Treatments? Microdermabrasion? Peels? hope that helps love wishing you all the best 💕
I’m about to graduate from school! I’m already claiming it, I’m passing first time and walking out with my license! So excited!
Sending you blessings 🤗✨✨✨✨✨
Amen! Believe and Receive in Jesus name
njmommie Amen!

I started college in August right after high school and it’s definitely not for me. I’m going to esthetician school after this semester is over.

I live in Va, and I would like to take classes in my community college but they don't have esthetician programs. The private ones are to expensive.
Yeah, I don't know of community colleges offering classes but I do know that a lot of private ones offer loans and even state grants.
What trade shows do you think are worth the trip/time/investment? Also what is your international esthetic perspective? Like how does international schooling and common practice compare?

Thank you!
How did you learn to do Brazilians? Did they teach you how in school?
Great question. So, at my school they didn't teach Brazilians but I asked me teacher if we could have time to practice Brazilians. I believe we watched a "how to" video and worked on each other. This was years ago hopefully they teach them now in class.
Love this!!
I just graduated from Tricoci in Bridgeview and I loved all the great information your giving💕💕
You're so welcome 🤗💕
Im 50 been doing hair for over 20 yrs and want to work in a clean fresh environment away from hair..im licensed to do skin but what refresher courses should i do.!?
what if i like skincare but don't wanna give people massages
There are other avenues in the industry you can take as an esthetician where you don't have to do facials or massages. My first job after beauty school was a eye brow artist for Lancome, I never had to do facials nor massage. Also, the massages you do are mostly the face, neck and decollate not like a full body massages.
How do you branch off into a medical esthetician. Most of the courses where I live just have the basic stuff like masks/waxing etc
That’s what I want to know too!!
Zanae Morris
Thank you for clarifying! Btw
That’s exactly what I’m doing. Getting my license then getting my bsn then masters.
You’re back! 😭💖
Sure am 💪🏼😉
What do you recommend for someone who wants to start doing it but from their own setting
Esme Dallas Find you ur niche, go solo and stay positive!
In the esthetician school will they be teaching sales?
Depends on the school you go to. I went to Pivot Point Academy and they did focus a small portion of our time on sales. However, a lot of this training you’ll receive will be on the job. My #1 tip for being really good at sales is know the products your selling extremely well and your clients needs. There is no need to “sell” if your educating your clients and addressing their skincare needs.
My test here in Pennsylvania did ask me those qs 😩 I need to pass the test I have failed and I’m very upset it’s my dream to pass and idk why I can’t pass
Keep having faith❤😇
I wanna do the program my community college offers it but it's a long wait list and I wonder if going to a private school would be the best thing for me.
Giiiirrrrllll get on that waiting list. 😆
Private college tuition/ student loans is something serious to consider.
I clicked on your thumbnail and here you are🤗🤗🤗🤗
I’m a cosmetologist by the way!
Hey, Girl hey 🙋🏻♀️
This is a great video Raquel! So much value!
Glad it was helpful! 🤗💕
@@raquelfrominsideout thank you that definitely makes sense!
what is the going pay when coming fresh out of school in your view as an esthetician also I would like to know had you thought about going back to get the instructors license so therefore you are paid a stable salary just to teach this thanks for the video
Depends on where you are located
Is there a lot of chemistry involved? I am terrible in those kind of classes, but I love skin and makeup! I’ve been into skincare since I was 14 but i’m not sure if i’m going to be good enough.
Baby girl you can become good at anything with drive and consistency 😉
No formal chemistry classes involved.
When you were talking about commission pay. When you were throwing those numbers out there, where those numbers the dollars per hour?
Its usually goes per service not hours! So whatever service she performs she makes a commission off that service (a percentage from the price of the service). If she goes 2 hours without a guest they don't get paid for that time. At least that's how it works at some spa's I've worked at in the past.
Yes, Skin By Mallory you are correct that's what I meant by commission pay.
@@mallorytoth9201 My name is Mallory too and i start Esthetics school in 2 weeks! I am so excited!
I want to go to school for this also, but can’t afford it and can’t get financial aid. Wish they worked with me as a senior...
Do you wear a uniform or scrubs? I’ve heard of estheticians not wearing scrubs and some that do. I’m will be starting esthetician program in 2 weeks and I’m so excited/nervous and just wanna be informed. Thank you!!
Its specific to your school which they should provide or give guidelines for your uniform. Wishing you much success love. 💕
So i want to be a lash artist and microblading tech. Do you suggest an esthetician license for that or would i have to have a different type of education and license?
Joselin Bautista this is literally me ! I plan on doing those same two things as well but don’t know which license
You have to have at least an esthetician/cosmetology license to be a lash tech/microblading tech. :)
Skin By Mallory Would you recommend a community college or esthetician school?
They have a eyelash extension specialist license. Im not sure about the microblading
What are some of your favorite CE resources? Would you ever consider it worth it to go through school twice to learn more techniques?
There is no need to go to school twice especially since your license will require continual education hours to maintain your license. Those credit hours can be in the form of advancing your skills through any accredited learning that is available in your area.
Where can I find laser classes? How can I become in a Medical Esthetician? I don’t know anything about the field. I want to become in a esthetician once I finish my GED. And I’m felling very attracted by this market.
Best video with all of the important info
Thanks luv 😁
im from shreveport la i wan t to know how to do lashes
Iam in houston texas had my liscense and let them expire and wanting to renew is there somewhere i can go just to get fresher course i ordered books and iam studying now want to take exam in October
I don't know of any refresher courses but there has to be something out there on the internet. good luck!
Does being a esthetician licensed in Chicago only enables you to practice there? Or can you work all around the world?
Hi Victoria, you can only practice in the state you are licensed in. Other states have varied credit hour requirements that you might have to earn to get licensed.
Thank you so much Raquel!
What is the difference between an esthetician and a medical esthetician?
I sell self care care products now (body cream, sugar scrubs, exfoliating bars) is this a good path for me?
I want to become Esthetician to be a make up artist. In Ga you have to have your Esthetician license to be one.
Love the video ,thanks for the info ☺️
i start at aveda in half a year so this is good info🙃
I love skin care!!!
What if I want to be self employed? I want to do only facials what do you suggest?
Do you have any advice for esthetician’s that are looking to buy facial products from companies and providing services for facial needs?
As a brand new esthetician this was very informative. Thank you.
Awe, I LOVE to hear that!
I think this is my new career goal
Do I need to go to Cosmetology school I general or is there just Esthetician school? I’m interested only in getting licensed in esthetics.
If you want to be an esthetician then you only need to attend a program for esthetics. Cosmetology programs are for hair stylist. hope that helps love 💕
Raquel From Inside Out thanks!
How do you work on a medical spa. Also Esthetician?
Thank you for being very detailed❤
I got you boo 😉💕
Is a Esthetics Technology Certificate
the certificate you need to be a esthetician??
New to this ! i dont have a diploma or GED. Asking if i can go head and start classes for esthetician? Please no rude comments
Summer Casas May depend where you are.
You just need a high school diploma or GED to go to beauty school. 😉
Summer Casas It depends what school or college. Daytona State only requires you take the TABE test which is much easier than the GED.
So I can be a medical esthetician by just getting my esthetician license?
Thank you for the video, very informative... But I wanna know if you can start your own practice immediately after graduating?
If you have the funds and the motivation, yes you most certainly can. 😉
Love this thank you!!!!
Thank you for watching Lisa 🤗
I want to be Esthetician but in my country there is no schools that offer this kind of training can i study online ..if yes recommend it for me 😔
Do nails have to be short as an esthetician ?
latavia nicole yes! It’s definitely easier for you during services, but safer for your client so they don’t get poked/hurt. In school we had to keep our nails short because we do facials with massages. :)
As a general rule of thumb yes. Some salons and spas may require it and for good reason, you don't want to scratch at someone face. 💁🏻♀️
So I applied to a school to be an esthetician what are some good questions I should ask about the school?
Such a great question! Here are some of my suggestion
- Is there a student placement program?
- Are internships available?
- What sets this schools apart from others?
- Will I learn how to preform Brazilians wax in class?
- Are there any post education available?
- Are there addition technical skills I will learn at this school such as Laser Treatments? Microdermabrasion? Peels?
hope that helps love wishing you all the best 💕
