- Poecilotheria ornata, Fringed Ornamental egg sac pulling
After 4 years of failures we finally have an egg sac to pull from our Fringed ornamental, it has been a difficult journey she has always moulted out before producing a sac, so this is a very exciting time for the Beastie Room

4 years is quite the epic uphill battle. Congratulations. 91 is nothing to sneeze at with an angry 1st time mummy.
May the force of being a mother be with you always!
We don't have kids, but being a person with NINE siblings (seven sisters and 2 brothers), I have had PLENTY of their kids of all ages, visiting our place. 🙂👍 But true:
Never underestimate the power of a Mom.😄
I feel bad for Mom. She tried so hard to protect her babies. She doesn't realize you'll take care of them.
Lol, she used her Jedi powers to bring the sac back to herself at 5:00
I was actually excited that she defended her egg sac so well cuz, to me, that means she had something really good to protect. I always worry when they give it up so easily. Great video, thank you💙💙💙
It looked a bit hilarious with that war going on there for a while when you should remove the eggsack and spider mum got a good leg workout with the dropped sack too! In spite of all of that as well as mold and clumping together in that strange kind of way I think you got a good result in the end. I hope they all will turn into slings! Have a wonderful week, take care dear Dave and Sweet Camera Lady! Hugs, Susanne. 👋😊🕷👍❤🥰🤗
Hello Dave and Camera Lady. That was super interesting this evening (or morning). I am so happy for the success even though it was partial. Congratulations to the end of a four year adventure. I am wondering if you have an entomologist that you can discuss mysteries like this with? It really looked like a fungus that was taking over the sac. Poor little buggers. I am sure the babies you rescued will do well now they are in a cleaner environment. I am super curious about this one and really looking forward to the follow up. Thanks for the peek at the Metallicas as well. One more moult and they will be adorable. Their teddy bear stage. Thank you for the fascinating video! I would also love to see Mama some time. So, I hope y’all have a lovely Monday. Stay safe and take care of each other. ❤🎃🧸
Yes it’s going to be interesting for sure❤️
I don't think I've ever seen one of your girls fight that hard to keep her brood! Great video!
Wow, that was really interesting. That lump was strange, it was like a sack within a sack. Well done T and Dave, thank you.😘💖💐🌻
I had to watch the struggle between man and spider again lol Thank you.
Congratulations on the capture and the rescue. Good luck with the next sac. Very interesting!
I admit I laughed at the sac drop. Not just once but twice! We all have our moments. 😂 Glad you were able to pull the eggs just in time to separate the viable ones before the fungus killed them all. Looking forward to seeing them as slings!
True! Once, that rotten stuff comes around, it's time to get busy!🤯
That girl is one tough mom the way she fought for her eggs, can’t wait to see the slings great video as always.
WOW!!!!!! I have never seen a T fight for her babies quite like this girl. I thought for sure she was going to come out to say hi!!!🤣🤣 Would love to get a clear good look at her. It's odd y the sacs are turnin out the way they are. Thanks for the update on the previous sac. Good to see they're healthy fuzzy kids. Tyfs God bless you
When you dropped it the 2nd time I actually slapped my forehead and yelled "Not again!" 😂😂 But she was seriously hanging on! Well, a huge congratulations!! After 4yrs of trying I say it's definitely a success. Well done!! Much love from Oregon❤
❤❤❤😂
I don’t know if you do trick or treating on Oct.31. But she has left you a treat!😂😂
That was one feisty mama spider! Also good to see the metallica slings doing well!
Who’da thunk?? That had me feeling sorry for A SPIDER!! 😳😳🥰🥰
Very intense with momma she didn't want to let go of her babies
I see she's not willing to give up her egg sack so easily !!
Mine Mine MINE! Sack drop! 😂 A very thrilling start to my morning. great vid, thanks.
Good timing again, saving so many from the mold and the rotting ones, I think that i like everyone else here yelled when the sac dropped back down. I am looking forward to seeing their progress 👍
Egglings! I am so glad you pulled them when you did. If you had left them we surely wouldn't have any. I am thinking it was cuz she is a new mom that, like you said, she didn't rotate the sac enough. Hopefully the next time will be better. Congrats on the ones you did get. Whew what a battle to get them too. She was having non of that egg nabbing. 🤣 🕷❤️
I think so too!
Good thing you removed the egg sack when you did. Nice that you to save some. Thanks for sharing!
Great job Dave 👏 love the videos and great work to you Camera lady as well
Morning Dave & Camera lady hope ya having an amazing morning the vidoe is awesome
Lol, she was not wanting to give up that sack.
ngl watching you yeet those EWLs into the nursery pot makes me so happy lmao. I laughed so hard when I first saw you do that.
It always makes me think of my kids in a bouncy castle. =D
Thank youuuuuuuu 😊
❤🕷❤🕷❤🕷❤🕷❤🕷
She is trying to be a really good mamma !!!
19:19: Seems like she didn't stir them up a lot...🤷♂️😮 Usually they sit massaging and kind of turn it, so that they keep being stirred up, thus stopping them from clogging and thereby dying/rotting, and contaminating the others.
She said "Excuse me! No you may NOT take my babies from me! Just who do you think you are?! 😂❤️
She was a big strong girl fighting for that sack, That was her motherly instinct not to let you have her sack, Good mama, And that egg sack was very interesting That white Stuff who knows what it was A little weird , Just another thing you have to find out Love the video Dave keep up the good work👍💖🕷🕷👀😁
I can't think of anything more precious than little eggys with leggys! Mum knew how precious they were and she didn't want to let go! Congratulations on getting at least the majority of the sack!🥰😍
Wow! Didn't get to see much of her, but that's an impressive mama. Glad the egg sac was salvageable... Also interesting that two pokie sacs have turned out a bit off. The metallica slings look nice and healthy, though!
Good luck with all the babies, Dave 😄👍
Dear Dr. Dave, you have reached the point where you construct the environments so well that you can no longer break in easily. Webbing like that has been of great interest to the military for years. And you did not drop that sack like an idiot! That Mother Spider had elastic retractor webbing on the sack. No joke. Why go to all the trouble of being the grouchiest most obnoxious spider in the room, who refuses to entertain gentlemen spiders on pain of death, only to be haphazard about that sack. She took no chances loosing the sack AT ALL. There was a strand that looked separate from the web that stretched upward then snapped back. That strand is pointed toward you as you empty the sack.
Mum put up a very respectable fight over that sac! I think my tweezers might have to be even longer! 😄. Very, very interesting sac... What a mix. I do wonder about the mold. Are there molds that commonly appear in enclosures? If spores were accidentally picked up by mum as she closed the sac, I can see the possibility of germination taking a while, allowing some development of the eggs but eventually becoming dangerous to the developing eggs. I have a background in microbiology so this really caught my interest. Wonderful rescue job, both of you! I look forward to seeing how these babies get along! Thanks for sharing!! 🤗
91 viable eggs Dave, not bad atall especially after such a long wait to get an egg sac and them Metallica babies have come on a ton, thanks to your knowledge Dave, anyway Dave another fantastic job by yourself and camera 📷 lady Dave.
Thanks George ❤️👍
This is my first video of a sac pulling and wow! Wow! The way the mother was holding onto the sac and fighting for them had me speechless and (oddly?) at the edge of my seat (even though I’m laying down). I think I just watched the most exciting sac pulling I will see for a while and it’s got me so excited to learn more about them, slings, and spiders in general! Thinking about it, the only thing I really know about spiders is mostly from the book/movie charlotte’s web and a teacher I had years ago who loved them (so pretty limited lol) but regardless I’m so ready to binge watch all your videos.
❤❤❤👍welcome to our channel ❤👍
You are in for a real treat if you continue to follow this channel! I came across Dave when my ex wanted a tarantula, I no longer have the lady but that's OK because I get all the amazing spider content I could ever want here!
That was determined mom. I she knows what she wants on a date with her male suture and motherly duties. Well done on patience on 4 yrs to breed her and getting the egg sac out. Hope the eggs with legs do well.
Thank you 🙏
What an intense impression of protection. That girl is awesome
You know what they say, third time's the charm ! Good thing you managed to get it out. Very odd that a section of the eggs all clumped up. Oh well, at least you managed to salvage close to a 100 slings. Here's hoping most of them make it to proper slinghood.
Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)
I always feel a bit sas for the mom, when her egg sack gets taken..😥💔
I once read from a guy who wrote, that one of his females actually wandered around the enclosure for 3 DAYS, before forgetting about it...😢
Great species, though, a true classic. I have learned from you and your wife, that rehousing is done EASIEST.. And SWEETEST.. with a square catch-cup/container. 😄👍
I’ve never had one that didn’t just go and get a drink and feed as soon as possible?
That’s just his personal interpretation of what he thought his T was doing .
Throughout the video I was really hoping to see the Metallica slings and at the very last moment Dave gave us a peek…amazing how quickly they grow
That is one protective mother!
She did not want to give up that egg sac. Fiesty girl
wow !! should be ultra interesting to see how many of these ones turn out. Hope you will keep us updated. Hope that *whitestuff* that some of the eggs with legs picked up doesnt *grow* onto the others . Thanks heaps for the metallic update they look beautiful !
Another first for me, what a mystery the clumpy eggs with legs???
Congrats to the Beasties mother. 👍😃👍
It may surprise you but I really enjoyed this video, I have to say that I love you opening the egg sacs for the first time, it is so beautiful, another generation being born! Keep going with the babies they are so good damn cute, I loved the previous babies, they seem to have grown loads! 🕸🕸🕸🕷🕷🕷
Felt so sorry for her trying to fend off the intruder intent on stealing her egg sac.
Heartbreaking isnt it
My heartbreaking when she eats them all
I've never seen an egg sac like that before but 91 is better than none
🤞 most of them pull through
😊👍
Hi dave n camera lady, well my ornata slings arrived safely and is now eating half a mealworm today, the other two new Ts not eating yet,👍
NICE that was a good sized egg sac shame a few didnt make it but still a good few there good luck with future egg sacs Dave
So happy most of these are viable Dave 💙🕷 keep us posted on how they are all doing x👍🏼🕷
That's why I never pull the sac after 30 days😅 But I like that you experiment and document for us these things! Awesome
so interesting to see fungal growth on the eggs after they started development. you probably got to that sack just in time! I'll be interested to see if that fungus grows in the incubator cup.
Wow the taming of the shrew...not !! Lol no taming this shrew😆🕷🕷 she looks really big..thanks for the close-up camera Lady i'm waiting on my new glasses.. Happy tou got a really good batch of them🕸🕸
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow! She fought really hard. But I think if You hadn't pulled it yet She would've ate it. Fingers crossed all goes well for them, like for the metallicas. 🤞🍀
Wow! Intense! You did a great job! I yelled out when the sac dropped!! Lol great video!
She was being a very defensive mother Spider. Would be good to see her as you said she is a large spider. Top video with great footage from camera lady as always.
2am and im up can't sleep forgot to take my meds🤷♂️ so waiting for them yo work , dave n camera lady my ornata is looking really nice now got its pokie marking on its abdomen now👍
My goodness that was crazy intense...I was afraid she was gonna destroy it so you couldn't have it
This one was a bit intensed wow she was like " oh no you don't 🤔😂😂😂
The sac drops and her good catches 😆
I saw one moving in that clump of eggs did you get that one. I love this video, I know Camera Lady wanted to get in there and do her thing. Good job Dave and Camera Lady.
Yes we picked through them after👍
Great video Dave!! I don’t think she was having any part of you taking the kids she really put up some resistance! It’s wonderful that you were able to save as many as possible 4 years is a long journey my friend congrats on the success Dave!🎉 Camera lady great footage on the nursery pot the little ewls looked fabulous bravo! Hope to see some updates Dave and again thanks so much guys great stuff!😎🕷
Absolutely
Great mother there . Bless her heart
good mornig 👍
Would you be able to do an update on these eggs with legs in the future, I'm really excited to see how many survive, I'm sure in your care they could all survive but putting into consideration that there was that clump, I think it would be really cool to see them as slings not just eggs with legs 😍🕷️🕷️🕷️
The updates on these would be good short videos for him. We get a video and he gets short videos
Out of all your egg sac pulls ive watched , I have never quite seen one like that. Wow she really put up a fight for that sack. That was epic!
Looks like a bunch of green grapes!
Bet they don't taste as good though.😩
Epic video Dave, she was being a great momma.
Mom didn't want to let go of the egg sac lol
Such a great mama 😍
One of my dream breeding projects (especially now that the sri lanken poecilotheria species are limited by law here in the states). I can't tell you how important these videos are to someone like myself. Thank you so much Dave and camera lady for all you do!
❤️👍
I feel so bad for thier mum she really tried to protect them but I'm glad you took them because I think that mold would have done for all of them.
You need to get one if those pill kits with the mini scooper. Use a paint brush and the scooper so you don't risk popping an egg with the tweezers.
Yay! Babies! Great success at long last!
Great vid but Momma deffo didn't want to let go she was havin non of it, great camera work Camera Lady just glad there was some viable eggs inside ...
I was thinking like Camera Lady, that perhaps Momma didn't turn them enough. Or some died and created this mold. But you could have lost them all, had you waited any longer. Good call to pull it. Oh wait a minute...she had the egg sack right on top of the barrier on top of those clay pebbles. All sealed up may spread that mold pretty quickly. Maybe she needs a bit deeper enclosure. Or lose the pebbles...? Peace.
You popped a baby David !!! it was still moving at the end . Why didn't you put the mould ones on their own pot so it dosent spend in the humidity of the pot and to the other eggs with legs 🤔. Must admit this was the first one I found a bit distressing , poor mum didn't want to let go 😥 But I know it's part of the trade. As also great work camera lady .Hopefully they will all live .would like to see them later on as sling 🥰🥰
There’s enough room for them not to worry ❤
@@daveslittlebeasties I think the concern was any residual mould on the survivors from the clump might spread (not spend) to the rest, hence giving them their own setup might have been a good option.
You can't leave bad eggs with healthy or the whole sac will be lost. It isn't a specific science as each sp is different but breeders hold their breaths during this time and try to replicate wild conditions as much as possible. It's always hit and miss most especially with poecilatheria. Dave did a great job collecting the ones he did
You saved alot of lives there. Yes, interesting about the sac. My theory is, maybe she wasn't rotating the sac? Just a thought 🤔
That was intense Dave, I don’t know how you stay so cool ! That girl didn’t want to give up her sac ! Your channel is better then the science channel on TV. Always great interesting videos !
Thank you so very much ❤
@@daveslittlebeasties Actually you the one I should be thanking for all that you share with us.
@@miketheknife2 ❤❤❤
Hello great video information and egg sack removal Dave 🎃🎃
Camera lady thinks the same as me. Coz you mentioned in a roundabout way she has, at times been contankerous, I'm wondering if she thought, I know I have to keep turning sac but why should I? It's my way or the highway! 😉
Beauty.
I just came home and noticed that my ornata molted :) ❤️
My favourite spider.
Wow nice
Awesome video!! I counted ten legs on the babies, and I don't remember seeing eggs with legs with a small spot like a gemstone, a horn? Really interesting. Thanks for making the old brain work on questions. Exquisite content, thank you!!
❤❤❤
Well done.
You're the best Dave! Thanks for all you do, your work, your videos & contributions to the Beastie universe. Much love my guy
I appreciate that!❤️👍
Beautiful spider ❤️ 💙 💜
The first time you lifted the egg sack I shouted "yes"....quickly followed by "$h!t!" 🤣....I could really feel your frustration lol. By the way Dave....I'm still waiting for my psalmopeous victori video😉🤣
You're a master at your craft, how long have you been doing this for? P.S. she is beautiful. P.P.S. I'm so jealous that you get to be the caretaker for all these wonderful spiders!
Thank you 🙏 😊
Always excited to see your videos 🥰
Yay! Thank you!
Another amazing job, just like the last egg sack a day or 2 later and you could have lost the lot. 👍
Reminds me of one of those crane games.
One of the best egg sac removals ever.
what a fight. got a mild shock first time you dropped the sac. what a fighter T. maybe mum didn't turn the sac for a good while and the bottom eggs went bad under pressure and lack of movement.
Possibly 👍
What a Journey. Flinched when this large heavy Momma grabbed so tight and you they fell back 2 Times.
I agree fully, it's very good you pulled. Think too she hasn't cared right for, didn't move then enough, so some suffocate, fell back on Development and the White, may is that Mold already.?.
Can't take it bad for her as 1. Time Mother with such a really huge Sack.
That Pair produced good.👍 and the pulling saved the Clutch, i'm sure.
Given the Chance big Girl will do even better next Time, I'm sure.❤
there is a success there PROFF, but hopefully SUBSCRIBER can give some information to you on the egg sack. some great work from the mother fighting you HA HA HA. camera lady -some great footage that you caught. many thanks guys and take care
Cheers matey ❤️
That looks like a fungal infection, with mycelia (the threads of the spreading fungus surrounding some of the nymphs and sonsolidating into a mass). If the wood had fungus, and if it was rotting it surely did, its mycelia could penetrate the silk of the mother’s silk tube. Spores and conidia (asexual spores) could also come into the nest attached to the mother’s feet or elsewhere on her body. Maybe only a few species of the fungus in your wood collection are harmful to spider nymphs, since most of the time things seem to go well. I do recall one of your videos in which the egg mass was hard and cohered, suggesting fungus there too. Fungus would be helped by high humidity, so I am wondering: are the enclosures with the most problems with infected egg sacs are among the most humid?
Thats an interesting theory I dont think its fungus ? as some of the dry enclosure have had similar results over the years , I personally believe it to be down to infertility in the sacs with hard eggs masses as for the nymphs thats the first one we had seen like that and I think again that came from bad eggs ?
@@daveslittlebeasties : it would be interesting to be able to look at mysterious things like that under a microscope. A low-power or dissecting one ought to be enough to learn something. If it’s fungus, you should be able to see the mycelial threads. In a perfect world, you’d have a microscope and have fun with it. Whatever the cause of your spider sac disease, I hope it stops. Thanks for taking the time to reply to several of my comments!
I’m a gardener and fungus/mushrooms love rotting wood. As soon as we have dead wood we get mushrooms. I know you like foraging for wood wild but you could be bringing home existing fungal mycelium already well established in the wood. It will send mycelium filaments through the wood and maybe into the egg sac if its touching? You could consider experimenting with wild wood versus something commercially dried and sterilized if such a thing exists. Just a thought
I would be exceedingly careful with the ones you pulled from the clump. If that IS a mold, it's likely to have left spores on the ones pulled out of it, and may end up spreading to the other viable eggs in the nursery pot. Of course, there's always a chance the mold spores are already on all the eggs, so this may be a moot point to raise, but I would still recommend isolating the ones from the mold clump in the name of safety.
Love to see the updates of them growing. Keep up the good work!
