A SENSE OF SCALE - REMINISCENCE / 8K HDR FLUID LANDSCAPES ON PAPER

  • A SENSE OF SCALE is a reminiscense to the famous "Sense of Scale" documentary by Berton Pierce form 2011. As the documentary, my experimental short film is all about details and the beauty of practical effects. I want to emphasize the meaning of handmade visuals and the effort it takes to stage sceneries on a small scale. I captured very tiny areas of paint flowing on a piece of paper while zooming in the closest possible with a custom lens setup. All shots are taken with my RED DSMC2 in 8K and several macro lenses. It took me around 1 year to finish this piece. Color graded and optimized for HDR devices.
    Thanks for watching!

    I love your work, bought your app too. The beauty you manage to create and capture is so extraordinary that personally it inspires me with very deep thoughts, sort of visualizing some kind of sublime existential meaning. Like in this particular work each stream of that white liquid moving through those surfaces represented a line of thought, a character's journey in a story, some with smooth flows, others with turbulence, all eventually but gradually fading away, while also some merged with others. Or another one the expansion of one liquid layer causing the compression of the adjacent represented how new ideas or values compete with each other over the attention space in our minds, and how maybe the solution to learning new ideas is to compress the already existing ones (i.e. reviewing and summarizing them to their gist and integrate instead of having a disjointed body of knowledge, computer analogy defragmentation of HD) in our heads, kind of creating a negative pressure welcoming new ideas.
    I am a psychologist so the beauty holds these types of thoughts about consciousness and existence. I wonder if you were ever so mesmerized by your work, because i know with the amount of time we usually spend in our fields like your line of artistic endeavor, we might get a little desensitized and those crazy observations might only come from an outside observer...I guess that's just art. But I would love to know if you ever had any sort of revelation from observing your work,
    Thanks for producing such thought provoking work, you remind me of what Tchaikovsky does with his music.

    • @RomanDeGiuli
      @RomanDeGiuli  Рік тому +1

      Hi Di, thanks for your long and elaborated comment on my work. It is very interesting to me, that you feel the visual is not only entertaining and relaxing, but that it really does something to and with your mind. Many people I know observe a deeper feeling, especially when watching this kind of fluid landscapes, kind of getting a high. Personally I'm very excited when I see something developing on paper which has a great potential to really become a scenery for a short film. I produce a high amount of images, but only very few of them make it into the final video. When I'm doing the editing and color grading, at a certain point my senses become dull. But I enjoy watching my works after a while again. Thanks again for your time and for watching my videos. I wish you all the best.

    • @Di011
      @Di011 Рік тому

      @@RomanDeGiuli Yeh I can totally relate to that dulling experience in my creative endeavors mainly writing. But the final outcome can be a pure joy.
      But about your work, I wonder if you ever decide to get into Virtual Reality and this. If you somehow be able to reproduce this in a 3D space (I know it's merely impossible) but even maybe have someone to render it in 3d based on your already made work, that will be really mind blowing. Especially with the upcoming metaverse exhibits, I am sure you will get millions of visitors (at least anyone who has tried psychedelics once or appreciates creativity and arts). And this new GenZ loves these types of experiences. I have some preliminary field reach experience in the VR world and they do gravitate towards collaborative artistic work. But anyways thank you for responding. Best vibes your way Roman
