Geoff Castellucci's arrangement of the song really was stellar. I appreciate you listening to a cover of a song that gives you all the negative feelings, and being able to objectively separate VoicePlay's contribution from it. And your commentary was insightful as well.

Wow, I honestly didn't expect such a high score. It was arranged by Geoff - the bass here.

Fair enough! Glad you separated your feelings about the song from the Voiceplay arrangement and execution!! And everything you said about Voiceplay is spot on!! They are exceptional!!

I understand totally. It took me awhile, several listenings, to love Voiceplay singing this song. They rescued it. I loved the breaking of the rules of acappella with the violin flying in (I used to play violin), but they balanced that out with AWESOME vocal tunings modulating/harmonizing with the violin. So, it was a successful rescue mission. Metallica should say, "Thank you," to them.

Voiceplay always pays homage to the original but it is always Voiceplay's version. Appreciate your ability to set your personal feelings aside, truly! Now, pick something you really love from their catalogue. Then remember to set your feelings aside. It will be different. Subscribed in anticipation!

I hope you listen to a song you like or find tolerable to listen to voiceplay in the future. They are known for top notch video game theme song, Halloween, and Disney/Broadway covers. But they go across most genres

I literally laughed out loud when you gave the score - good job separating analysis and feelings, sorry it was such a trial! I far prefer this to the Metallica original, but I'm not as down on it as you, so this ends up being one of my favourite VP songs, for all the positive reasons you listed. Hope your next VP is more to your taste.

I've been waiting for this video since I saw it on your filming list, so to say I was excited to see it go up is an understatement.
I was very taken aback by your score (I expected something around the 7ish range) and I am very happy about it! I do appreciate that you kept your feelings for the song itself separate from your review of the cover and really did their skill justice here. It makes me wonder how you'd react to their cover of Seven Nation Army, assuming you don't hate that as well 😅
Their bass, Geoff, is indeed incredible. I'm not sure if you caught him going right up in his range immediately after singing from the depths of hell, but he has a 5 (possibly 6, he keeps getting better) octave range and can generally sing whatever the hell he wants.
Anyway, thank you for this excellent reaction, it was actually hilarious to watch you struggle with how much you hated the song itself vs. how good these guys are.
I'm sorry people seem to lack the necessary short term memory that would allow you to provide your explanation of your scoring decision once instead of having to repeat it multiple times, but you did a great job there as well and seem to be much more patient than I would be. Kudos!

Thanks for recognizing VoicePlay's talent and giving them a score they truly deserve on this, despite the fact that you don't like the original song.. This was one of the first songs I've heard from VoicePlay and I was totally blown away by the arrangement and their vocal talents..

Thanks for the reaction. I know it's hard listening to a song you really just don't like.
Voiceplay always respects the original while make it thier own.
Again thanks for your honest opinion 😊

    Great reaction, great score.
Yep. Voice play can do that. For me it was the same with "Seven Nation Army". Hated the original, but I actually happened to love VoicePlay's version.
But I guess the main difference is that I never hated the song itself. I just couldn't (and can't till today) stand the voice of the original singer.
Take that away, take an ingenious arrangement by VoicePlay and you end up with a really, really good song. (At least in my book).
By the way - I remember that you were quite fond of "Pray to the hunter" by Saltatio Mortis. - Has anyone already pointed you towards their latest (ok, one of their latest) feat "Finsterwacht", which they did together with Blind Guardian? Even if your schedule is overflowing or you don't do non-English songs, I highly recommend watching it just for fun. 🙂

I really enjoyed your analysis and reaction- thanks! I am impressed by how you are able to be honest and fair with a cover of a song you hate- how professional you are! Voice Play does other covers of rock songs as well as covers of Disney and gaming themes (they even cover another song done by Metallica "Whisky In The Jar"). I agree with the other comments about going to Voice Play's playlist and doing a reaction to a song you like. This cover was seen by members of the legendary band, 'Chicago', and they liked it so much they reached out to Voice Play and Voice Play sang two concerts with 'Chicago' in November.

They usually pay homage but never create a copy. They say they are not a karaoke band 😉. They were brave trying a song like this as an a capella arrangement. Geoff (the bass) did a great job. Thank you for your honesty and analysis. They had to choose between a violin and trying to simulate guitars with their voices - I think the violin was a good call - especially since VioLayne is good at it. 🎻 PS: Have you listened to their cover of Valhalla Calling? You can hear just how low Geoff Castelucci can go🌹🕊

You were so professional, separating the song, the arrangement and vocals. There have been instances when a reactor has said it was their favorite song and I sort of held my breath. Some have been unable to get past their expectations. They basically don’t like it because it’s not like the original which is sort of the point of a cover. You had the opposite problem and managed to pull it off.
I’m old and live under a rock so often songs that they do about artists that I’m not terribly familiar with and songs that I have may have heard but never really listened to. I’m not a fan of metal so when I saw that they had done a Metallica song I wasn’t sure what to think. And this is so well done that it’s actually on one of my playlists.
I would love to see you react to one of their songs that you don’t hate. Maybe not one you love because there’s that expectation thing, but one you feel fairly neutral about. Not only would we get a good analysis but you would possibly even enjoy yourself!

I’ve only very recently heard anything by VoicePlay. Started with their rendition of “Daddy Sang Bass” by of course Johnny Cash. Now they’ve just released a cover of “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden, which was written by Chris Cornell. Their version is singular and unique. So, the group is growing on me. I agree that Geoff Castellucci is an excellent low bass singer. And, yeah, to hear him sing metal would be killer. Actually, I’m trying to imagine some kind of a capella Type O Negative, which could be awesome. At any rate, great job, guys.

The true measure of a group isn't in impressing fans, it's in forcing a critic to acknowledge your ability. Getting a 9.2 from a critic beats 10 10's fr fans

I would love to see you do another video on them my personal favorite is hellfire the arrangement is brilliant
I also suggest the bass singers solo work he does some great covers my favorite is wicked game (his name is Geoff castellucci)
Thank you for the video! Can’t wait to go back and see more

It can be difficult to be objective on a song when you really dislike the original and I am sure all Voiceplay fans appreciate that you did a great job doing that. I can't wait to see you react to something else they do! 😍 The bass singer, Geoff Castellucci (Jeff Cast-a-loo-chee), arranged this. The other main arranger is Layne Stein, the beatboxer, and he is extremely creative as well. You should check out their cover of either Dream On or Carry On My Wayward Son for some of their Rock covers, but they have covered almost every genre. They are also completely independent so you don't need to obscure their videos. They don't copyright block. The only times a video will have an issue is if it comes from the original group/singer which is super rare. They are on Amazon Music, it is a smaller platform for them so they don't advertise it.

I love this song, always have and always will. Not overly keen on this version though because I don't like accapello in general. Having said that, they are doing a great job. My absolute favourite cover though is by Apocalyptica. Truly beautiful.

I usually like the songs that voiceplay covers, even if I don't know them, but I avoided this one for a while after hearing it once. When I found out it was by Metallica, I was convinced. I was listening to Scorpions, Zeppelin, Alcatraz, etc. almost 40 years ago, and I just couldn't get into Metallica. I don't know why. Now I only listen to this one by voiceplay.

I've been there. There are songs that simply annoy & irritate me that have hit number 1 or have been in the top 10. You hear them constantly! Now, I don't feel that way about this song, but I feel for you in rating this cover. You still have to hear a hated song...ugh.
You did a wonderful job being fair to VoicePlay. Thank you.

When you first paused the song, waited a second, then said “I HAATE this song”, I laughed so hard.
They have done multiple songs I detested; when they announce the titles I’ve physically cringed. It takes all I have to press the play button the first time, and it’s only my faith in their abilities that lets me do so.
There’s some that they changed up enough to make me even like it. Creep was one; the original sounded like a stalker bragging on being a jerk to me. I detested everything about it. They took away all the feeling of bragging and made it regretful feeling and all of a sudden, I like the damn thing.
I hope you find a song they did that you like. 😊
Oh and…PS: You talked about how low Geoff, the bass guy, was singing? Yeah. That’s not low for him. He can hit - and hold - B0. You can hear that on their cover of Valhalla Calling.

I appreciate you separating the original song from Voiceplay's cover, and giving them credit for what they did with it. However, it doesn't seem to me like a great idea to have your first experience with a new artist be a song that you already know you hate. If I were you, I would have tried reaching out to the person who made the request (if there's a way to do it), explained the situation, and asked if they have any other Voiceplay songs they'd like me to react to, instead of the one that will partially ruin the experience for me.

Not criticizing--everybody has the right to their own likes and dislikes!--but I am now very curious what it is about the song that you detest so much. Happy but a bit confused with the score. You seemed to frown about the moment right before and during Layne came in with violin so i expected high 8 at best. I now hope no one wil put Apocalyptica´s cover of The Unforgiven on the poll. I like theirs a lot but two songs you detest - even as covers - would be just Dante´s Hel for our boy David!

Hey have used the violin a couple of times and you will always see if they use it. They pretty much always decide what they feel the song should sound. And Layne is a top notch violinist, fans call him Violayne😊
