KSW of Clear Lake is my home school. Everything Kwang Ja Nim Aue said about the art is true. It truly is a home away from home for everyone who joins. Getting my Blackbelt was one of the highlights of my life! JKNJonathan

I never realized that there was an Institute in my area, Rio Grande Valley in Texas. This video has been very helpful narrowing down or giving me basic and helpful insight about this discipline. Thank you very much.

@@jerrywoods4066 He did not. Look it up. He signed up for UFC with an arm wrestling background . UFC required a "martial arts style" so his friend hooked him up with a KSW uniform and the association promoted him to 4th Degree Black Belt agreeing if he was willing to go on TV wearing the uniform. He won big time and KSW's business exploded because of it.

This gentleman may have a lot of experience in KSW, so his technical knowledge is legit. I would definitely study from him if I had the chance. The part he gets wrong is that "true martial arts" is not studied to learn how to fight. Wrong. History is very clear that martial arts were originally designed for combat and war, NOT solely for "art" sake. Fighting is not "sport" unless you are referring to mixed martial arts competitions, point sparring tournaments, and grappling competitions. The KSW curriculum was organized in Korea by In Hyuk Suh and his brother In Sun Seo. Both brothers were taught by Hapkido founder Yong-Sool Choi. They were also taught by a few others, but the history is a bit sketchy. Suh left Korea for the United States to start KSW here, and Seo stayed in Korea to run his own organization.
That said. I've always respected the curriculum of KSW. It is very well organized with punching, kicking, lots of joint locks, take downs, grappling (yes, even arm bars, ankle locks, etc., but not as in-depth as judo or jujitsu), weapons, physical conditioning, and forms. From what I've heard, it has become more of a demonstration art the last few decades, opposed to a self protection martial art. It really needs to become more focused on realistic training.

I trained in KSW for almost 10 years. I then switched to hapkido because I found KSW is very much lacking in many areas that the hapkido I now study does not. Also, KSW claims it teaches weapons and this is false. It teaches how to swing a sword and a choong bong (medium staff), ssang kom and ssang tahn kome hyung (twin long and short sword) but does not, as it claims, teach how to use a sword. Ssang kome hyung, for instance, is just, pretty much, repeating the same exact cuts for the first half of the form. Finding even a good HKD instructor five times better than any KSW instructor. My view, as I went from practising to actually studying them, that, in my view, hapkido has more juice per ounce than KSW does. Depending on your goals and interests, look around and take hapkido, if possible. Those who train in martial arts tend to have blinders on, either by choice or not. WKSA dabbles in many things and much of it is horrible, like their ground "grappling". I think they try to teach too much and most of it is not well done. Just my views from KSW training and then moving to actual martial arts training in hkd. If all you have had is store bought apple pie, it seems great until you get a taste of real apples in a great baker's homemade pies.

My comments are just the opposing, non-rose tinted views of a former KSW practitioner.

I agree with you being a current brown belt and I have been disappointed by the weapons part of this fighting style causing me to turn to hema for my weapons training although I decided to stay with Kuk Sool Won and are an 11 year member.

@George George , I stuck with it long enough to see the high ranks were great at "show me" techniques but the stuff is far from effective or valuable in the real world. One of my instructors, a sixth dahn still teaches the WKSA drivel. Also, KSW is a dictatorship that does not allow or promote growth outside its "system". I have learned more technical information as a coloured belt from Sin Moo than KSW taught me as a black belt. KSW choking (mok cha lugi) and ground defences are pure jokes, for instance)

Kuk Sool Won (KSW) is not a true “traditional” Korean martial art in the sense that it’s not that old. It’s an eclectic mixture. It was founded around the late 50’s or early 60’s. In Hyuk Suh and his brother In Sun Seo primarily learned Hapkido. Then they went about to create KSW with other ad hoc techniques thrown in. It’s the same nonsense story as Hwarangdo - which is also primarily Hapkido based. The founders just created a fictional backstory to make them seem more unique and “special.” It’s really a shame at how they intentionally fail to properly credit Hapkido as their main source of techniques. This is not to say KSW practitioners are not skilled. It’s just that there is a convoluted history that is fictional in nature.

The issue of Gary Goodridge's affiliation with KSW has been discussed into oblivion for decades. Gary is from Canada and he found a school that was not part of the KSW organization, that was willing to "give" him a 4th degree black belt without any training in the art. All he had to do was wear the uniform in the cage. How they got away with using the trademarked name, is a good question.

Kuk sool won is not a style it is a system of everything that has been in Korea
It is the only one with scrolls from monks the death touch dim mak
To make black belt you have to break bottles and 5 boards no air gap

I can believe that and then you gotta check the background of the instructions, especially the Korean Karate ones.
