So, we will be getting a new fifth wheel soon. Not sure how to deal with our current one. Either going to trade it, sell it locally or sell it nationally. Suggestions?
Keep it and rent it out on RVshare and Outdoorsy. We made 13k off a 16k TT in just one year.... Plus where we live everyone has a truck. Not sure how much a 5er will get you, but worth a shot! We plan on buying 2 more later this year.
Sell it privately you will get more money, downside is it might take awhile too sell.
Give it away to the viewer who has the best idea on how to get rid of it.
We just bought a new fifth wheel this past weekend. If you are looking into a mid bunk again, look into the 2018 1/2 Forest River 372LOK. It has auto leveling as well as a king bed and a great floor plane. The 2018' 1/2 had some great changes from the 18'. They upgraded the storage tremendously and added a flat roof on the front, witch makes a huge closet up front. I bought a mid bunk from your suggestion on one of your videos. We are looking to sell our old one, if it doesn't sell early spring we are going to rent it as 99wcguy suggested.
Just a week ago I bought the exact same camper you have except the Phoenix version. They are made in the exact same plant as the Chaparral. The outside is different than inside colors a little bit different, but the rest is the same. I did get the auto level which I love! Can I ask why you're selling? Your videos is one of the reasons I bought this trailer because of how much you enjoyed it.
People may not be aware but that micro adjustment will save a huge amount of wear and tear on the internal gears of those jacks, simply by allowing the load to be evenly spread out if properly adjusted. One jack won't be lifting the entire load while the other jack catches up. Or they could buy the bulldog individual jacks but that's quite expensive, trust me,I know,I just replaced my system with the bulldogs because 1 jack stripped out the lifting gear, and by the way, when that happens the unit falls until the other jack stops it.
Hey brother great job. Make sure they don't vibrate out while driving. Mabe weld a washer at the end of its tread.
+Shackles: the bolt portion is pinched to prevent that from happening.
Good stuff
Next you should review the RV Snappads (or a similar design) that snap on the round feet and stay there all the time so you don’t have to use those rubber blocks.
Aggreed...RV Snap Pads (rvsnappad.com/) look pretty nice, especially since you have round feet now
Might have to do that........if we still have the same Fifth Wheel :) woops, I said too much
Big Truck Big RV - Man I wish I could cycle through HD trucks and RVs like you do! Can’t wait to see what your new RV is though!
A lot of weight on a little bit of thread for the micro adjustments don’t ya think?
What other 5th wheel are you thinking of getting in the future? Also, how long should we own our units before trading them in? Thank you for your response.
Not sure if you answered this or not....how come the kit did not have and adjuster on both sides?
Do you carry a Tri-pod for the king-pin to help with stability, keep us posted on what happens will you stay in the same weight range or go a little heavier, would you consider an on board generator, I'm getting excited for you. Enjoy
JD, whats the temperature device plugged into your cigarette lighter?
YEAH GUY THATS NOT A 9/16' BOLT AND NUT. THATS IS THE SIZE OF THE NUT AND BOLT HEAD. THE BOLT WOULD THEN BE A 3/8' BOLT.
Why didn't you put a micro adjustment on the other side?
I installed it on that side because the wind was too strong on the other side and I could record the audio well. I moved it after
Is your trucks diesel one of the emissions cheating ones that ford made?
Ben Berg: Probably.
I’m thinking about getting the jt strong arms for our travel trailer, is it worth it? Do they really work in giving the camper greater stability?
+Ben Roberts: Yes, they do a very good job of stabilizing the trailer.
I have them. Yes well worth it.
Appreciate the info, I have 4 young children and when we go camping the trailer moves. Thank you gentlemen
Noticed you have a speed tech traffic advisor.... please, please, please get rid of that China junk! I have a hook up if you want quality, made in USA products with a 5 year warranty. Take care, Sir
msg me.
I did on FB, cant PM you on here for some reason.....
You should invest in a pair of AMP bed step 2's to make things easier to reach from the side of your truck.
Good video, yes I do have the auto leveler and love it but what I want to get is a set of those JT Strong Arm but soon thanks for the video.
instead of using the bolt that came with the adjuster, use the bolt for the strong arm to hold in the adjuster... no?
I was going to ask the same question!
And I as well...
The bolt for the JT Strongarms probably doesn’t have the same shear strength as the one holding the original foot.
To answer a few questions: 1. I installed it on the passenger side because the wind was blowing too hard on the driver side and it messed with the audio too much. 2. I did not use the bolt that held the JT Stonge Arm in place simply because it's not originally intended for shearing support and I did not want the weight of the landing gear to be on it. 3. I am also interested in seeing how well the RV stabilizes with the addition of the micro adjuster. With all the weight resting on it, I'm sure it will have little negative impact. 4. Also, there are times that both feet do not come in contact with the ground at the same point when dropping the front landing gear. I understand that the adjustment isn't designed to "level" the RV, it is being used to make sure BOTH feet make contact with the ground at the same point. I hope this help.
I am fortunate in the fact that my landing gear run independent from each other. In other words, I have a switch for each side and can level them up that way so that they both touch at the same time. Then just put them down together with both switches.
JT - mine do also. It's very handy when you do a lot of camping where you don't have level paved pads.
This is about the best video I have seen from you, and you have made a lot of great videos. A simple yet ingenious way to get the RV leveled out perfectly. I wish I would have seen this years ago. We are picking up our new 5th wheel with 6 point auto leveling in the next couple of days. Good to know you are looking out for us RVers. Thanks !
Those landing jack pull handles appear to need some lubrication.
They now have rubber pads that snap onto your round pads. I added those this year, they really make a difference
Nice video as always. But. Please don’t hate me. I’m not trying to start an rant discussion here. That adjuster is not so much to level the unit as it is to help ensure that when both feet touch the ground they both have equal weight on them. I would not suggest using them on a auto leveling system. When u unhitch a unit with auto level the first option is drop front legs. When u push ok and the system begins to bring down the from two legs they will touch down and even out weight in their own. Basically as the adjuster you installed dose for your unit. The same goes for the rest of the leveling jacks on the middle or rear. The system reads amp spikes and knows the feet are on the ground. Only thing I have to add to that is some units do sit high off the ground and do require additional blocks so that the system dose not run out of stroke or travel in the jack. Some thing additional for u is u can add auto level to any fifth wheel even if it dose not already have mounting plates. Check with your dealer or the manufacturer or the rv or leveling system you want to have installed on the unit. I have no real preference to brands yet my self but I do handle a lot of lci electric 6 point auto level systems. They are easy to service. However lci also makes a hydraulic 6 point version of the level up system which I also like. Sturdy and solid. I would say it comes down to cost of aftermarkets. Equalizer in Elkhart Indiana has a really nice system and they do all after market and oem install. Ask for nick Godfree. And big foot also makes a after market system located in white pigeon Michigan just over the Indiana Michigan line. Hope this helps u and your views. Happy camping.
Thanks! I should have clarified in the video. I'm using it to level the feet when they make contact with the ground. Sometimes that occurs at different levels and I want to make sure they are level when touching the ground. Sorry for the confusion. Great comment though.
Big Truck Big RV no problem. Love the videos. Just wanted to make sure I was not steeping on any toes. I was thinking you might have meant what I had said but wanted to clarify for others too. Fingers crossed I’m holding out for my bed rug still this spring. Hope to be able to share it with u when I do
You lost me at pads...YUCK! Yeah....get that auto-leveling system.
HOW DO YOU KNOW THE BOLT WAS NOT DESIGNED TO HANDLE SHEER LOADS??? DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT GRADE THE FASTENERS ARE?? PROBABLY NOT
@jim gaffney - Do you have to yell? Oh, and why so many question marks? Inquiring minds want to know.
Great video! But,
what's wrong with using a couple of different wedges under the original feet? Save the expense of new feet that swivel. Seems to me your worried more about looks than time. Seems like people are micro managing with gadgets for their time on camp set up. I get that if you were a full time RV'r .
At least we don't have the burden of upkeep of a covered wagon and feeding the mules anymore.
I to in near future will be going full time at RVING and appreciate your videos and information and at no way trying to shoot down this vid.
My opinion only!
Just saying
Thanks,
Jeff
You'd be amazed at what a hydraulic auto leveling system can do. The very first campground I took my Montana to was unlevel as can be, side to side unlevel, and I hit that auto level button just to see it in action and boy lemme tell you the door side tires, both of them, came off the ground! You could straight up wheel of fortune those jokers! Of course I fixed that with some horse stall mats under the tires, but still.
never understood a back up camera.
but then i drive a 18 wheeler for a living.
so i understand better than most how to hook up with only the drivers mirror. (past year and for this year i drive the goat at work 12 hrs a shift). but did long haul for years, local, pud, and "special" delivery's. aka: interesting, hard, "fun".
hey love your videos! I've commented before and had a great reply from you so I have a new question. My girlfriends son is about to come into some money and i wants to use it to buy a new truck and 5th wheel and 1t DRW truck He keeps wanting t put a leveling kit on and a lift plus mud tires. i try to tell him that isn't what these trucks are designed for. A lot of the new ones have air ride suspension that will auto level . Could you possibly do a video with pro's and cons of these things? Tires, level kit, lift kit and how an air suspension can solve that?
I have a question, I watched you install your strong arms and you had a rod that made it easy to tighten the wing bolts. Where did you but that, my strong arms didn't come with the rod.Car Buf (Pastor Ken)
Would be nice if you gave a description on the micro adjuster like you did for the round feet!
Thanks for the review looks like great products! I have the auto leveling system on my 2014 Palomino Sabre fifth wheel and when it works I absolutely love it but I seem to constantly have little problems with it! it's a Lippert system at the time I believe the best one available. I always say it works best as long as you put it on a level site but if the site's not level it always goes out of stroke I believe means one leg is too far out compared to the other.
Unless you have the ability to adjust these in or out after the trailer has been unhooked imo they are a waste of time/money spent. just carry with you a 1/2" and 1" thick board with you.
Nice video for a single motor landing gear system upgrade! My worm gear stripped out on the drivers side single motor landing gear leg and I opted to install a Bulldog 500161 independent dual motor landing gear system that performs great.
Where might I find the electric leveling jack at a reasonable price? Also looking for a reasonable price for those strong arms.
Are you hinting that your next vid will be your new auto leveling fifth wheel... lol
Great vid man keep'em coming
The Tire Pressure monitor we see at the beginning of the video is that for the truck or the trailer? Looking for something for my fifth wheel.
When you set an Rv with auto level get snap pads, we put them on ours, love them. Also will never buy an Rv with out auto level, well worth it.
No auto-leveling??? Shoot - I'd get a new RV right away if I were you!
What type of psi Guage is that
Well, after watching this, I will get auto leveling when we are ready to buy.
A couple observations:
1.) You got a new watch!
2.) You must have a GoPro strapped to your chest
3.) Why don’t you show your face?! We want to know what you look like since we are loyal followers of your channel.
+Ryan B: 1. Not a new watch, just a different one. 2. Didn't use my GoPro, but instead a LG G6, 3. Someday
very nice. I like it !
You have quite a few items listed above. Can you please provide the link for the above video products? The round feet and the leveler you put on one side. Thank you!
it's all in the description
how much does it cost for a complete auto level system? You should upgrade to that, night and day difference...
Regal2800: about $2700 plus labor
Do you have a link for the rubber pads?
High Mount Backup Camera ???
Why don’t you ever say prices? You seem so vague with prices of products you’re showing us.
+HoodiesMusic: I put the links in the description. Prices tend to change on Amazon, so I don't want to create confusion.
Hey man I have a question for you. This last July I purchased a 2017 Lariat F250 with the powerstoke and so far I love the truck. However there is one thing I do resent which was not upgrading to the led headlight and taillight package. Any thoughts on how I should approach ditching this halogen set up? I’ve looked online and found oem lights which are around 1,500 bucks a piece. Now I know if you order them from the factory they only cost you an addition thousand dollars. What do you recommend doing?
The relays and fuses are the same to support both systems. I personally love the Quad LED headlights. Check our the 2017 Super Duty second on www.ford-trucks.com. There is an entire topic setup for this.
Added ground control to my rig after purchase you should hit LCI up maybe you could do video of install for discount on kit. FWIW mine was about $2k bolted in no welding required on install one of best investments I've made.
why only on one side an not both sides??????
😎🇺🇸 Hey Good Stuff👍
Why didn’t you install the micro adjustment adapter to the other side? I can almost grantee you that you will need some time in the future.
My first thought as well...
Good observations. It’s actually going on the other side, but the wind was funneling through that side and made it hard to record audio. I installed it on the passenger side for audio clarity.....the things I do for semi good video quality. :). It’s going to be moved to the other side when I get a chance.
I think he meant; why not put adjusters on BOTH landing gear? That is my curiosity, you never know which pad will sit first? All depends on the terrain.
You would usually be stacking some leveling blocks, but it is often not possible to get both sides equidistant from the landing pad. For simplicity’s sake, lets assume the leveling blocks are 1” thick and you end up with a 1/2” difference or gap on one side. If that gap is on the non adjustable side, simply swap one stackable block to that side so that the same gap exists on the side with adjustability. I could be wrong, but that’s what I envision.
Because you only need to have micro adjustability on one side. You lower the non-adjustable leg until it reaches the ground, or just above it. Then you lower the adjustable leg down until you get about an inch higher above the ground of the unadjustable leg. Then you use the screw mechanism to move until it matches the ground clearance of the unadjustable leg.
From there, you just motor the legs down until you can unhitch it. TaDa! The front is level.
Nice!!
Sweet
When you store your camper for the winter do you throw down some 2x8’s under the tires so they don’t sit on rocks for months on end? I do this for piece of mind that the tires won’t have indentations on them, might just be me though.
I did this as well, on my motor home, except I used 1 inch thick HDPE Cutting boards. Wood will retain moisture for a long period after rain and that also does your tires no good.
Bruce Marcotte Did Not think about the cutting board. Do you just have them in contact with the ground or do you put them on top of boards?
They are just sitting on the ground. These cutting boards are commercial grade 1 inch thick. There are several WEB sites that sell it you can get in in various lengths and widths. When I got them they were left over scraps that a friend had. He was a meat cutting equipment repairman and he supplied his customers with it.
We take our Fifth Wheel out at least 1 or 2 times per month. However, I usually put boards. Good idea with the cutting boards!
As a former service advisor for a high volume rv dealership,I highly recommend getting something between your tires and the ground when storing. Trailer tires deteriorate from the inside out due to moisture seeping in through the sidewalls. That's one reason so many blowouts look like the tread is still new on them, it's internal failure.
It's a 3/8" bolt and nut. Takes a 9/16" wrench and socket if it's SAE standard, not a 9/16 bolt and nut. Precise nomenclature matters. I thought you were an engineer, probably an EE.
I'm sure many know about this, but if anyone needs pads, or isolators, or whatever, I have three words, HORSE STALL MAT. I have a sheet at my work bench area that I cut things out of all the time. Someone who's handy can template any design, even with a handle, and cut out what they need. Need a thick rubber something to go under, or even adhered to, those feet? Need something to put under the batteries, or LP tanks? Need a spacer in between washers to isolate something you bolted on? Heck, I've even made drivetrain components and rubber isolators out of it. With a little time and effort, and sharp blades, you can find plenty of uses for it.
