    Thank you very much for this teaching. In my language, Gikuyu, Kenya, we too do not have specific names for cousins, great nieces or nephews, or great aunts and the like. It wasn't such a great problem for me personally to accept Mama Maria's perpetual virginity and Jesus being her only Son.

    When Jesus spoke to Mary and John, he was trying to give them comfort in their most distressing time. He was saying to Mary that she was losing a son and gaining a new one in John. He was saying to John to comfort his mother by being around her. He was telling John to stay alive.

    the answer:( Coptic orthodox Christian)
    Jacob, the brother of the Lord, is James the son of Alphaeus, and at the same time he is the cousin of Christ according to the flesh, the son of Mary, the wife of Clopas (Celopas is another pronunciation of Alphaeus).
    The cousins' children were considered brothers due to the close relationship, according to the Jewish customs of talking about this relationship.
    An example of this topic is what was said about Jacob’s kinship with his maternal uncle Laban, as the book says: “And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his maternal aunt, and the sheep of Laban’s maternal aunt, that Jacob went forward and rolled back the stone, and watered the sheep of Laban his maternal aunt, and Jacob kissed Rachel and raised his voice and wept, and told Jacob Rachel is her father's brother and Rebekah's son” (Genesis 29:10-12). We see that although Laban was Jacob's uncle, he was considered his brother.
    This same situation was used by Laban with Jacob when he asked him to be paid for herding his sheep. He said to him: “Because you are my brother, do you serve me for free? Tell me what is your reward?” (Genesis 15:29).
    The same situation occurred in expressing the kinship between Abraham and Lot.
    Abram was Lot's uncle. Therefore, the book said about the history of Abram and Haran (Lot’s father): “And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son” (Genesis 11:31). However, when Lot was taken captive from Sodom in the war at Kedorlaomer, the book said: “And they took Lot, Abram’s nephew, and his possessions, and departed... And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he dragged his trained servants with him” (Genesis 14:12-14).
    According to this ancient custom, Christ’s cousins, the children of Mary, Clopas’ wife, were called his brothers.
    As for this Mary, she is the one mentioned in the Gospel of John: “And standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene” (John 19:25) (Read another article on this topic here on the St-Takla website in the Questions section and articles). It was said about this Mary in the Gospel of Mark: “And there were also women looking from afar, and among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger, and Joses, and Salome” (Mark 15:40).
    These Jacob, Joses, and Salome, the sons of Mary, the wife of Clopas, are the ones mentioned in the Jews’ saying about Christ in the Gospel of Matthew: “Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers Jacob, Joseph, and Judas?” (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3).
    As for the Virgin Mary, she gave birth to none other than Christ, and she lived as a virgin all her life, and the “brothers of Christ” are not her children, but rather her sister’s children.
    James the Younger (son of Alphaeus) was called the Younger, to distinguish him from James the Great (son of Zebedee), the brother of John the beloved.

    I guess I don’t understand the point of the perpetual Virgin mythology. It’s never said that that is the case in fact it’s said to be the opposite and then we reinterpret these other hypothesis about Jesus relatives. I don’t know why Mary needed to remain a virgin throughout her life to have submitted to God‘s will for one particular miracle and one particular time. The Holy Spirit instructs us to do all sorts of things for the purpose of a miracle (go pray for a particular person at a particular place etc.) but it doesn’t mean that you do that forever, that obedience is for that miracle. The Catholic Church has built a theology around the Mary promoting her to some exulted status with symbolism prayers etc. that I don’t think she ever wanted or God intended of her. She was just a godly humble servant doing what God asked her to do. She did it and she went on with her life (which may have included having children by natural birth with her husband which resulted in brothers of Jesus as the Bible states)

    I don't see any problem with Mary having sex with her husband. She was virgin when she got the visitation of the Holy Spirit, but it does not make any sense after Jesus was born. That fact does not degrade her at all.
    Now, Matthew 1:25 says explicitly that she did not have sex with her husband until the baby was born.
    God says that sex is sacred in marriage. So I don't see any reason to remain virgin while being married.

    • @jzak5723
      @jzak5723 2 роки тому

      Then neither is she "degraded" by remaining a virgin. Matthew 1:25 DOES NOT say Mary had relations after Jesus was born, it only says that Joseph had NO RELATIONS with her till the child was born, IOW, during the 9 months of Mary's pregnancy.
      quote; God says that sex is sacred in marriage. So I don't see any reason to remain virgin while being married.
      Just because YOU don't see a reason for Mary to continue to be a virgin, doesn't mean it didn't happen. The single biggest reason might be that the HOLY SON OF GOD came through her womb, and both she and Joseph chose to keep it that way. Does that makes sense enough for you?

    • @honurapanui
      @honurapanui 2 роки тому +2

      @@jzak5723 yes, for me it is clear that she did not have relation with her husband, until the baby was born. That means that she did have sex after the birth, which is perfect under any law, like any married couple. The Bible names Jesus brothers, so I don't see the conflict.
      No, that "agreement" that you are mentioning is not in the text. Sorry

    • @jzak5723
      @jzak5723 2 роки тому +1

      I didn't say anything about an "agreement' being IN the text. I was simply saying that it is certainly possible that Mary and Joseph chose to not have relations after the birth of Jesus, the Son of God.

    • @honurapanui
      @honurapanui 2 роки тому +3

      @@jzak5723 it is possible, but very improbable. Why do you believe that that is the case? Anyway, the texts says explicitly that they did not have relationships TILL the baby was born. That means that they did not have sex during pregnancy but they did after. Otherwise that till would not be there.

    • @jzak5723
      @jzak5723 2 роки тому

      @@honurapanui
      So, if it possible, then the only thing that would prevent you from agreeing with me is you wanting to maintain your current belief that Mary and Joseph somehow "had to" have relations. The word "till" or "until" doesn't always mean there is a change in action that takes place afterwards. For example, when Paul tells a congregation to study the Scriptures "until" he sees them in person, does that mean that once Paul comes, they can stop studying the Scriptures? I can give you an unending list of similar examples where the word "until" doesn't mean a change takes place. Think about this also, Matthew the author may have been trying to "emphasize" that Joseph DID NOT have anything to do with Mary's conception of Jesus, that it was miraculous, in order to fulfill the prophecy that a virgin would conceive a child, because there would be people who would question the virginal conception, and just say that Mary had an affair, or she was raped, or Joseph had sex with her. In fact, there are people today who say those exact things.

    Big confusions.
    No one knows the ages of Mary and Joseph when they where betrothed. No one.
    Mary could have been fourteen, twenty, twenty-five; we just don't know.
    It is very possible that The Virgin Mary was a second and, maybe, third wife of Joseph.
    Joseph probably had children from a previous marriage(s). (Life was difficult in those times.)
    St. Joseph was a honorable man. He protected Mary and her Child as called by God.
    He must have been much older than The Blessed Virgin because he is no where to be found in accounts of the later life of Jesus.
    I have no problem with Jesus having 'brothers' or 'sisters' or, ' cousins'.
    (The issue here, regarding the reading from scripture, is that we ALL have brothers and sisters in the Kingdom of God.)
    That's the point.

    Teaching that Mary remains a Virgin after giving birth to Jesus is totally unbiblical.
    In Matthew 1:25 (KJV), it is described that Joseph knew her not until she gave birth to Jesus. The word "knew" is the same as sleeping with or having sexual relationship with. It is very clear Joseph did not sleep with Mary, until she gave birth to Jesus. Which means after Mary gave birth to Jesus, they did what husband and wife would do, and they had other children.
    The word "knew" was also recorded in Genesis 4:1 (KJV) "And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord."
    Luke 2:7 also says Jesus was Mary first-born. If Mary only had Jesus, then the scripture would not says Jesus is first-born.
    Why did Jesus entrusted Mary to John? That's because John was the only male disciple who was there at the cross.
    Please do not try to twist the word of God to fit into Marian Dogma which is the invention of men. Everything taught in Marian dogma is in direct contradiction of the Bible. Either the word of God is wrong or the invention of men is wrong. I would stand by God's word any time. Please stop teaching falsehood.

    I cannot understand how 'intelligent' people cannot read simple English. In Matthew ch. 1 v 24-25 it says - Then Joseph being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife. v25 And knew her not TILL she had brought forth her first-born son and he called his name Jesus.
    Joseph clearly had intercourse with Mary after she had Jesus, her FIRST born. The implication being that she had more children. Then of course, we read in Matthew ch. 13 v 55 - Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And his brethren, James and Joseph, and Simon and Judas? v 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? . . .
    We read also that His brethren did not believe in Him (John ch. 7 v 5).
    That is a three fold proof from scripture that Mary did not remain a virgin all her days. She was blessed among women, not above, and was converted and believed on her Son, confessing Him as Lord, just like every other sinner born in this world with a sinful nature.

    • @michaelmicek
      @michaelmicek 3 роки тому +5

      Well... the Bible wasn't written in English.
      Rob covered how "brother" just means "male relative".
      "Until" means "up to that point" but doesn't necessarily mean then or after.
      "Firstborn" is a technical term... the firstborn is to be dedicated to God, as an infant, so before he has any younger brothers.
      We do use "among others" or "among the rest" to point out a special distinction.
      Like "a prince among men".
