I love this. It’s one thing to learn licks and how to play - but learning to think about being a bassist, and be intentional in practice, is gold.
For context, I’m a decade-long “bedroom bassist” - slap on headphones and a Spotify shuffle and I’m happy to play along. A year ago I also picked up guitar, and am trying to get more serious and structured.
Tales like this - the thought process and methods - help me get more structured. This is good, and I want more.
(I *also* want you to play, and teach me to play - but I want more of this too.)

sup Ted! good video. my two cents is. i'm 62 and came up with the good rock, funk, R&B. the best! i went from drums to guitar to bass and back to guitar all through the 80's. now. i lost a finger tip off my middle finger on my left hand (fretting hand) a few years ago. (3 years) and just can't get my head around guitar like i used too. so i went back to bass. and am having the best time i've had in 20 years relearning the space where bass lives.(different animal) and has it's own space in music. you might not hear it. but you know when it's not there! LOL! anyway after all the lead in. my point is. tell it like it is! just play some tunes! even if they don't sound good to you right now. play them 50 times and you will get better. play what you like and you'll improve faster. and have a lot more fun doing it! good solid bassics LOL! i had forgot how much power bass has. and how much fun it is to play! earth wind and fire. jeffery osborn, P funk. war. and a ton of others. youtube is a great source for seeing how they did things if you have trouble figuring it out. but like you said. the repertoire is where it's at! just play! if you can't play the whole tune. play what you can! good stuff here! keep it up. later!

Wait, playing a musical instruments means playing music? Oh noes!!! 😂 FWIW, Andy Wood (incredible guitarist with amazing technique) praises repertoire for building technique.

🎯Hi, Ted. Just some feedback that may be useful: I think of JOINING your channel when you perform on your bass, Especially with transcripts. This video(respectfully) has had the opposite effect. Best wishes as you grow your business.🎯

@@ErnieLeblancof course man! I’m just a dude trying to do a thing. I know I don’t always get it right and might terribly miss the mark sometimes.
I’ll still miss the mark from time to time but constructive feedback is welcomed. I appreciate you taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment.

@@donaldmills2679 I have a time for a very quick video call. Can you do that?
Otherwise you just have to go file > open audio file or drag and drop

Oh! Dear! This is the most limiting, misleading and damaging video I've ever seen on UA-cam. Did you know that Jaco Pastorius practices on a fretted bass because it requires more pressure than a fretless, and so strengthens his fingers more than he needs? Because the art of most activities is to be within your capabilities, not at the limit of them, and just increasing your repertoire will not do that for you. Why do producers pay extra to have sessions bassists - most of whom have probably got at least 10,000 hours of practice under their belts - to play highly limited bass lines on pop songs - a massive gap between capability and need? Because it will be better. I play bass and guitar in my bands (not at the same time - the keyboardist plays left hand bass if I'm playing guitar) and one finger dexterity exercise I learned on guitar - which has no musical content - improved my playing almost instantly. And what do you mean about learning repertoire? Are you learning basslines note for note, or learning the chord sequence over which to play your own basslines? If the former then that's very limiting, and the later doesn't even require rehearsal time. And are you encouraging people just to play in covers bands, rather than playing in bands that make their own music? Again very limiting. A bit of dedicated dexterity exercise is not going to take too long, perhaps 10 minutes of a 1 hour practice, and will raise, in time, your actual physical capability beyond what you need - which is what you need. And will be much less of a waste of time than watching this video.

When it comes to learning music, the universe is the limit, there is so many different ways to learn & grow musically..at the end of the day, just pick up your instrument and play... @TedTalksBass Love what you’re doing here. UA-cam can be a real cesspool of rude, opinionated, and uninformed viewers - it goes with the territory. You’ll never be all things to all people so don’t waste your time trying. If some folks don’t like your perspective, they’re always free to move on, make videos of their own demonstrating their expertise etc. Your videos are well-done and your content will continue finding its way to those who can use and benefit from it, so please continue. Thanx for what you do and good luck going forward.
