“we ate a lot of dandelions, they’re cheap, you can get em for nothing” this is the most wholesome content you can find on this website
And dandelion root supports liver function so win.
One thing, I wonder how easy it was to get lemons then.
Animal sanctuaries I’d agree are a tad more wholesome
Dandelion root is also a natural diuretic. However, part of me is screaming, “Hey, that’s a weed”!!
You forgot about Bob Ross.

I had a neighbour who was a very nice but extremely quiet and guarded lady. One morning, I noticed she was weeding my yard. I went to speak with her and thanked her but she didn't need to do it. She said, "I eat the dandelion greens". She asked if I used any pesticide and I said no. I found out later from her daughter that she was a holocaust survivor and how much she had suffered. My heart ached. Her daughter said, they used to make wine or drinks from the dandelion flowers. It is amazing how humans can adapt to a very cruel life. Clara's video reminded me of the beautiful soul, I had the blessing of knowing.
The world is cruel, but people lived beautiful life with their loved ones. Best memories, not like now.

AMEN TO THIS UNGRATEFUL SOCIETY TODAY
"Sometimes the Lord thinks of you, and drops food from heaven." Reminds me of a story my mom told me about her mother during the Great Depression. Like everyone else, my grandma's family was poor, and didn't have much to eat. She and her siblings were walking along the road when a truck hauling vegetables was driving by. A big bag of onions fell off the truck, and the truck didn't stop to retrieve it. So she and her siblings picked it up and hauled it home. For the next week, they ate meals made of onion. When she was older, one of her favorite things to eat was buttered white bread with a thick slice of Limburger and a slab of onion. For everyone else, it was the breath slayer... for her it had been a lifesaver.
+Lauren Simonelli thank you for sharing that story... interesting little picture of another time.
+Lauren Simonelli I also appreciate such stories. I remember so many like this from my grandparents. In fact, I remember watching grandpa make this dandelion salad, and thought for sure he was putting me on, ya know? lol! There might be a day when we all half to do this for real . my mom said she use too save avacodo seeds and dry them out and make flour for baking . We as people got spoiled and forgot how to live .
My mother also used wild onions in soups. They have a delicious & pungent flavor. I'm always excited in the spring when they pop up in the grass. I love adding them to bone broth.

I’ve never heard of using the avocado pit to make flour, interesting.
My favorite meal, growing up, to look back on is chicken, rice, and beans. Simple, but delicious. I think about it often😅
I really hope you never eat avocado pits, like all other stone fruit (peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries), the "stone" part (aka pit, seed) contains trace amounts of cyanide in them. Eating that for long periods of time would be incredibly damaging to you. Please dont eat hard stone fruit pits.

Sage Springs same lmao
As someone who's been eating dandelion salads for as long as I can remember this was a interesting watch! I thought we were the only ones that ate them. Theres one important thing that was left out: Only eat these things in the early spring, after they start blooming or get lots of sun the leaves get super bitter and taste horrible. Also we chop them up fairly fine so it's more like a slaw, still use the oil salt and lemon juice but we sometimes add fresh plain crumbled tofu and or veganise to mellow out the flavour a bit. The ratios of lemon and salt are fine tuned to get the yummiest results
Thank you for explaining this. I've tried dandelion leaves a few times (just tasting a bit out in the field--no dressing) and they were _horrible_ . Couldn't imagine anyone eating an entire salad of them. I'll give them another try this spring.
this is why cultures that use them as tea, wine or eat them as part of meals would blanch or sauté them to remove bitterness
@@toomanyaccounts true, except that would somewhat damage the raw nutritional value.

TY ❣️Clara’s family for continuing to let us watch her wisdom♥️
We grew up eating greens, dandelions included. We ate it from root to blossom. The greens in salads or cooked like spinach with a little lemon and olive oil. The blossoms were used to make jelly, tea, deep fried or in soups. The root was also for tea (stomach issues) and in stews. The entire plant is useful and healthy. We also ate things like lamb quarters, fiddle fern heads, wild grapes...these are the kinds of knowledge that is increasingly becoming lost. I thank my parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc for what they passed on to us.
+Mo Rob I sure love your comment!
Kat Rand
Probably not half as much as I loved eating it. lol
Growing up in the pacific northwest, I learned early on the berries and plants that were good to munch on. Me and my friends would spend the whole day in the forest playing, when we got hungry we'd eat fiddle fern tops, various wild berries, etc. My favorite was sheep sorrel, it has a delightfully lemony taste to it.
Nowadays I live in the eastern washington desert, unless you find sagebrush to be appetizing not much to munch on out here.
come to west washington sometime! its a smorgasbord out here
Mo Rob lol my friend cooks like this she even picks mushrooms lol she awesome😚

You must be fucking stupid to not see when this comment was posted.
Rockbell Well NIA is telling the truth she died, in fact she died like 3 years before this kid posted his comment. She's been dead for like 6 years now.
Come back . America needs you more than ever Clara
She has passed the torch. Now it's our turn to keep the fire burning.
She dead tho...
I'm going to try this salad. It looks good, with lemon juice and olive oil.
agree thank goodness for their insight to film this as she is teaching us now for those willing to hear
Not sure what survival skills from the great depression are going to do to help america now but alright amigo.
I remember watching this when it first came out. God bless y'all for sharing Clara's knowledge with us!
boy you'd better bend down and pick those dandelions up for mrs.clara. her back

yara awe, so sweet, sending love💖
Please Yara, we need answers
You mean I have been pulling and throwing away lawn food my whole life?!
Thank you Clara. I am going to try this salad.
Just found Clara today, in July of 2024. She would be 108 years old now. What a wonderful channel!
My Dad was a depression era child. He always tried to teach us to eat what we had and don't waste anything....It took me many years to understand it...Now, with Covid19 and the limits we have...I can say, he got me ready for this disaster...Thanks Dad!
She seems like the nicest lady ever, I’m really sad I didn’t find out about this channel before her death, RIP
How do you know she died?
@@heatherva Check her channel description, it says she passed away in 2013 😭😭😭 r.i.p Clara
@@flowyflame aww :(
My father would dip the flowers in egg and coat them with seasoned flour... fry them like mushrooms and they tasted like mushrooms...
+LuWyndaful Whoa. Definitely something I'll have to try.
+LuWyndaful Really? good to know, thanks.
+LuWyndaful Wow. I've heard that one can make a healthful tea of the roots and flowers that is good for kidney, bladder and stomach issues.
LuWyndaful Oh that sounds good
I remember my grandmother who was born in 1925 and she told stories about dandelion. How wonderful it was when they sprouted in the springtime. The first greens available after a long winter. First greens after a long winter and the depression. I know you are on the other side now Clara. Whispering in our ears your frugal advice and wisdom. Much of the food I grew up on felt depression frugality inspired. Tomato soup over mashed potatoes, canned peas and a little meat. Wish we also had the dandelion greens! Now I am an herbalist and the dandelion green stories is part of the thread that continues...
Everything about this channel makes me happy. I love listening to Clara and watching her beautiful old hands. She reminds me of my Mother. ♥️
Dandelion greens, mustard greens and Rapini are the most underrated greens yet the most nutritious. Each have their own flavor, with the Dandilons being the more tart of the three in taste. They are rich in antioxidants with great cleansing properties for your liver and if you have digestive problems. When I was a little girl I would go with my mother often to pick them in random fields, even asking Farmers if we could pick them in their fields as well. Very much like Clara brandishing her 🔪. It was funny the farmers thought we were odd folk asking to pick their weeds lol.
Dandelions are best picked in the spring before the flowers get established, when they are their most tender.
My mother washed them three times, out in the backyard with the garden hose in a big bucket, same as Clara😊 If she was able to find a good field on our car rides and gathered enough, she would blanch them and then freeze baggies of them for the winter, bringing them out and boiling them well before serving with the dressing.
They are awesome boiled like 20 minutes or until tender. Drain them well and then add olive oil salt and lemon. Delicious!!!
absolutely 😉
I have a question. Are there pollutant concerns for those who can only pick from their sidewalk lawns in the city or tight suburbs? AFAIK pesticides are banned for weeds in Canada, but I'm curious if there's stuff like roofs, dirty and rusty gutter runoff and dog excrement that can be a danger to people.
@@p_roduct9211 wash them in water 3 times..just water. Then soak them in saltwater, 2 separate soaks, a couple of times for an hour or so..that is how it's done.
I eat the dandelions and leafs raw. Of course, I wash them thoroughly and make very sure that the lawns were never treated or sprayed. Dandelions are so very nutritious for a person.
@@annedavis6090 Will the salt water help take away the bitterness? It tastes even worse than rocket salad.
i don't understand the people disliking her videos 😕
Me neither, I just discovered these videos today. She is just adorable! But, for every entertainer of any type there is always a critic.
they're idiots and trolls
Sometimes it's just bots downvoting random video.
Because some of us don't want to watch an old lady take her time talking about the recipe. She's nice, but she's not what I was looking for; I'm time constrained.
We wanted an authentic Depression recipe put in a simple manner, with the ingredients listed in the description, at least. This video could have been twice as short if it was done by someone with experience or education in the media industry.
Obviously a big part of this series' is based on being charmed by this (old) lady. It doesn't appeal to me; so it becomes a rather tedious recipe video instead.
Ga'lax Auberon so don't watch it, but don't bother to dislike it! Good grief!
Her information is now saving lives for sure!!! God Bless her!!!!
Can we just appreciate this woman? Like we all know that the great depression was a terrible thing. And she just continues to eat in this way to educate us about it.
She is incredibly adorable and this is very interesting
Just discovered this lady, and I can't stop watching. She is so cute! Like being in the kitchen with grandma.
CrypticColors Makeup agreed. I'm binge watching now. I'm gonna buy the book soon. I wonder who the proceeds go to now she passed away.
Thank you to Clara whoever's idea it was to start filming this. My parents both grew up during the depression. They would both talk about and occasionally fix meals from back then (including dandelion salad) but left behind very few recipes after they died. Yeah, I could Google them and probably get something close but to hear and see it come from the real deal is priceless. This channel is a godsend to me.
Clara has a cookbook!
"It takes awhile to do anything, you need patience" I love this sweet woman now with God and look forward to meeting her someday and telling her how important she was to many of us even after she left this plane of existence. We may be heading into another Great Depression.
My Ma makes an arugula salad almost exactly like this, so I sent her the video to watch. A few days ago I went to visit and there was a jar of dandelions in water in her kitchen, she had shown the video to my 8 year old nephew and he went out in the yard and picked them all for her to make a salad for dinner ❤
Clara lives on because of these videos ❤
@Alexander Climenti excuse me???
Alexander Climenti don’t be a dick head
Ive been watching her videos for the past 2 hours, Very Unfortunate that she is no longer with us. She seems like such an amazing and kindhearted woman with so much appreaciation for life. Im only 16 and she has opened my eyes to learning more about how the lifestyle was many years ago. God bless her❤️
It’s so comforting to watch this lovely grandmother. What a sweet person.
I am 58 and I still harvest dandelions and stinging nettles as they are the first ones to grow in the spring, they both are sauted or made into a soup or added to scrambled eggs
And when the world needed her most... she vanished
She did what we needed bevor we knew it...
She gave us the knowledge, she didn't leave us empty handed.
@@roguefbiagentmendez2541 And for that, I am forever grateful.
She posted a day ago :( im assuming just her family still posting videos they didnt get to post yet?
@@elmstreetdoll3270 her grandson (I'm assuming) that shoots the videos said he will still upload videos they shot but hadn't posted and other stuff in her memory but will also continue the cooking channel by making recipes from her cook book

👌🏽🤣🤣🤣
I think of Clara every time I see dandelions. Making dandelion salad today for the first time!
Seeing Clara pick the dandelion leaves takes me back when I was a little girl and I would go gathering dandelions with my nonna, those were some of my favourite times with her. I am so gals to have seen this video, who ever posted it, thank you, you have brought back some truly wonderful memories.
My parents grew up during WWII in Greece and had to learn to be very frugal as they were very poor. When I was a young girl in the 70's in Canada, we would take a Sunday drive just outside the city where there were farmlands. When my Dad spotted a good weed patch he'd get out the car and knock on the owners door to ask if he could pick some weeds. They'd always look at him strangely but they would allow us to pick. We'd come home with bags of greens and weeds which included dandelions etc. My mom would wash, boil them and we'd slather on some olive oil, lemon and salt. Delicious, especially with some bread for dipping in the oil.
Did you pick plantain as well?
My friend is from Turkey..she picks grass from the field by her house..she boils it with baby onions and seasonings and omg it's delicious..she would give me baby food jars of it and a little goes a long way..she also made me grape leaves which i love but have yet to make..i don't speak her language n she doesn't speak mine but for years we were friends and always found a way to communicate..we don't live so close anymore🙁
@@nunyabiznis817 my dad likes to pick plantain sometimes. They are extremely healthy for you.
I suspect that nearly all edible weeds are super healthy, especially when compared to all the radiated, preserved & processed, & poisoned foods we eat today.
@@nunyabiznis817 beware of round up &other nasty stuff sprayed on plants
RIP Miss Clara. Your videos will live on forever. As a kid, I heard my grandmother say they ate dandelions and Black Birds as well. I was floored so one day me and my cousins were playing outside and I picked up a dandelion and popped it in my mouth. I remember it was so bitter. I told my grandmother and she said, "you didn't do it the right way." I'll fix you some, but I told her no. That bitter taste was still in my mind. Grandparents are both gone on both sides now, but my mind goes back to when I would go in the Summer and spend time with grandparents during Summer vacation.
I just made fried dandelion today. I always wanted to make them but i was very unsure and i didn't always have the right ingredients in my house. (Im latino, we don't really bake or use regular flour in my house hold.) but today a lady gave me flour that she didn't need and its early April. I picked someone dandelions, washed them good, got weird looks from my grandma, and made one of the best things i have ever cooked.
You must be an angel still watching over us all. I found your channel and your recipes are a Godsend to me. I have been struggling with health issues these past 2 months and all of your recipes are so pure and wholesome that I am actually going to try them. A big thank you to Clara's family for still keeping this channel up on UA-cam and for keeping her legacy alive.
I hope that you are still with us, Ms Silverwolf, and I wish you well.
She's an angel because she managed to live to old age? People who let their emotions distort their thinking like this will never cease to fascinate me
FARecords please leave,and don’t come back😃
Ngl I’m really glad that these videos are being recommended to me. We’re currently broke, we can’t get anything from the store both due to the virus, our lack of money, and the fact that the store has basically nothing now that everyone has bought everything. Also these videos are just so wholesome and they always brighten up my day
Where do you live doll?
Betsy Teske I live in Nebraska, and the town that I live in just had our first outbreak. There’s a family that has it
What a great video! But now it’s time to go to sleep.
Everything will be here in the morning, just enjoy your rest. Goodnight.
