I was a friend of Cesar Pena on rythmn guitar on that tour who died not so long ago. A pretty tough job although he was always in awe of Albert. RIP Cesar.

It looks to me like the drummer's not used to playing with Albert. I can see that Albert's style is to play lots of notes slightly off the beat, sometimes in front, sometimes behind, which can be off-putting to the rhythm section. The drummer should take charge and play everything absolutely on-beat, rather than adjusting what he does to match the soloist. I'm a gigging guitarist, and have played with drummers who lack the confidence to play solidly, so rather than them taking charge of the timing and allowing me to come in and out while they play without any deviation, they listen to me and slightly adjust their playing, which really messes up the whole band's performance. I think that may be what was happening here.

If any of us ever had to play with some crazy backup band on the road & out of country. Without ever playing with them before & being able to fully rehearse our set. Then I guarantee this is probably the best it could have possibly gone.

He was a tough guy for sure. You should do the next reaction when he was playing with Gary Moore at the Hammersmith, he clearly didn't like the way Gary's band sounded like.

Maybe it's just how one sees things.... I'm a drummer. No one got destroyed here...???? The drummer was listening throughout and reacted.
I kept waiting for Albert King to turn around and say something rude or disrespectful to him...
IF he had been disrespectful to him, he should (coming from an old timer) stopped playing and asked to talk off stage... In this case and all others your a professional being paid to play-- your not being paid to be disrespected... by the producer, manager, or fellow musicians.
Again, I just don't see what the big deal is here.... Again, I guess we all see things differently.

Yeah the drummer sounds fine to me, but I'm not Albert and it can be very frustrating when someone in the band isn't doing what they are supposed to. It stops you letting go and playing right. I have to say i am impressed that despite being unhappy Albert could keep playing and singing so well

I'm pretty sure he was using an Acoustic solid state amp here and always did during live shows. I don't think he ever used tube amps. I know on In Sessions he used a JC 120.

    • @BluesforJ
      @BluesforJ Рік тому

The Roland JC-120 wasn’t made until 75… so for the majority of Albert’s career he was certainly using tube amplifiers. Most notably he was using a Fender Dual Showman as seen in his live performance at the Fillmore East 1970. In this 1980 performance you can also see what looks like a Dual Showman in some pictures, unless it was another band members amp.

Nothing like trying to hold a slow shuffle together, with a full band that’s pushing, while getting yelled at by the leader! Like walking a tight rope with a strong wind! 😅
I think the drummer is pushing, or playing ahead of the beat a bit, maybe a jazz drummer. Al probably wants him to chill and play in the pocket
Or maybe the drummer couldn’t hear Al

its not his amp..its the in and out oscillation sound from his phase shifter that's giving that effect.
in the 60's and early 70's Albert had a unique metallic guitar tone that all the great rock players imitated but sadly he went on to ruin it by using a phase shifter that completely muddled his once crystal clear "woman like " guitar tone .

King had a chip on his shoulder, because he wasn’t recognized as a young man, the way he was in the 70’s and after.
He heard white British musicians playing his songs, and getting notoriety, while he was still unknown by most of the U.S.
He also has one of the worst takes on Hendrix, that I’ve ever heard. I think he was very jealous about Jimi’s success, and didn’t like the hippy movement at all.
He wasn’t as angry in the 80’s, but it’s hard to listen to him play with better guitarists, as they usually hold back a lot, not wanting to show him up.
The SRV one, recorded as they sit and talk, in a studio, then play songs, trading leads.
SRV is trying so hard to keep his licks at Albert’s level, before bursts just break out here and there. Eventually King just tells him to go off, and he barely even plays, making nasty faces, while SRV does his thing.
