My grandfather was a blacksmith at this pit in 1900.

Very interesting. As an ex local-ish resident (Keynsham) the local heritage is fascinating.

    Great vid,
at 18.37mins the new house on the left was where the colliery canteen was up until not long ago. it was lived in as a bungalow for many years. Also in the left edge of the field under the batch it was at one stage possible to see the edge of the somerset coal canal which was partially covered with slag. i lived 100 yards from here for 30 years and studied every inch of the area.

I dragged the University of Bath Hiking Club up to the top of the spoil heap of Camerton Colliery in 1986 as part of an epic ramble from Green Park Station in Bath to the Waldegrave Arms in Radstock ... via the "Hope and Anchor" at Midford and "The Wheatsheaf" at Combe Hay. There must be more industrial/transport archaeology per square mile in Midford than anywhere else of comparable size in England!

@@Towpathtraveller1693 - In my student days, when I lived in Bath, I was inspired by the Reverend John Skinner's diary - entitled "The Journal of a Somerset Rector - to explore the remains of the Somersetshire Coal Canal and the former GWR Cam Valley branch. When I reached Camerton I got chatting to a retired miner called Redvers Emery who had spent all of his working life at Camerton Colliery, and told me what conditions were like at the coal face. He lived in one of the little cottages beside the track leading to the mine, and invited me into his home for a cup of tea. He told me that when the coal mines were nationalised in 1947 the NCB invested heavily in new machinery, all of which was left in the mine when it closed in 1950 after a working life of 170 years. My interview with Redvers was subsequently published in the Bath University student newspaper.

This one really inspired us to do some more exploring in the Camerton area. We were walking the coal canal route but went on a bit of a detour and found ourselves at Camerton new - thanks to your film we knew where to look to find the pit shaft as well as the station and Camerton old (after much circular walking!) Absolutely brilliant series of films.

@@Towpathtraveller1693 ah great, I have subscribed so will keep an eye out for it. I am lucky to be within walking distance of a few collieries but hoping to go further afield once it's over. Stay safe and I hope it's over soon so you can get out and about again.

The destruction of the railway system must rank as one of the greatest acts of industrial vandalism in history.

All done by government ministers with an interest in road haulage companies, short term gain for the few long term pain for everyone else
