Hi Daniella, To save time you can get it from Sri Lankan or Indian grocery shop near you. If it's not possible roast the urid dhal well. (it will slightly changes colour and you get the beautiful roasted aroma from it when the urid dhal is roasted). When it cools down grind well and sieve to get fine flour.
Hi, you can add whatever you want to make taste for your liking but this is the authentic way of making 'muttai maa' which I didn't want to change in any way. . That definitely would have added more texture to the muttai maa. This is my mums recipe which didn't have shredded coconut as an ingredient. I will try adding coconut to it when I try next time. Thank you.

You don't use muttai maa for anything else but you just eat it as it is. I did add sugar to this recipe, please check the initial part with ingredients. Thank you Vijayalakshmi.

I think muttai maa is diffrent from jaffna to pungudutivu - my grandmother used shredded coconut into muttai maa - 😋
