Here’s a suggestion for your Apple app, the rings should be ring bologna and you get a piece of bologna for every time you use a word. The goal is to finish your whole ring! PD don’t like to waste anything, especially good food! 😂
I'm so glad I got on here and found yous, I was born in Lancaster, PA. Raised Lebanon....graduated from Cedar Crest. I knew my Grandmom Gettle was PA Dutch, (I'm commenting as yous two are bickering and I'm really reminded how my family got hahaha) Anyways, I did lots of research. My original names were Schauer to Showers and Kreiver to Kreiner (cursive mistake suddenly changed the last name??? *shrug*) Oh well see I'm rambling even typing... nice meeting ya!!
I like to throw some Pennsylvania Dutch in, like "He was gretzin'", or "You got me all vahuddelt", or "Mach's gut!", or "Wie bischt?" "Gell" isn't just PA Dutch, though, that's in other German dialects, too.
Thoroughly enjoying the PA Dutch insights! My grandfather always said something that I think may have been PA Dutch (he was born and raised around Philadelphia). Does this sound like anything you know? It was "ha shma sock nichts." I think that whatever he was saying roughly meant "quit your yammering."
Well, World War One really started with the suppression of German, generally. Remember "Liberty Cabbage" for sauerkraut? Or "Pennsburg, formerly Heiligsville"?
Nah ya got me hungry for Vilbur Buds! My Mom is 101 and we still get her five pound bags of Wilbur Buds direct from the factory. My grandfather in Wernersville always had a box of them on the kitchen bureau and we'd grab a few as we'd run by when we were little kids....SO delicious.
I used "mach's gute" the last time I visited my local Amish community here in Michigan. The young teenage girl just repeated it back to me and said take care as well. She wasn't overly enthusiastic about the term.
How would I say " release the hounds !'' in PA Dutch ? I want to say it when I release my 2 Jack Russell Terriers on my Mom whose father ( my grandfather ) was PA Dutch ! I remember him speaking it as a child and laughing hysterically because it sounded so strange, I wish he was still here to teach me. He had a great sense of humor. I will be watching your channel alot to learn what I can , thanks for taking the time to do this
👀 Gut G'duh DouG! 🤔Kaanst du schreiwe die waad @ 6:19 ? (did I hear "fer damm zeit" ?) UN was does it mean exactly ? Maybe Chris's advent calendar idea could be 365 day tear-away calendar 🤘🏽Viel Danke Buwe 🗣️Schwetze Deitsch 🌷
Yep, grew up in Kutztown saying "yamma yay" all the time. Gley bissel -- haven't heard that one in decades.....it's why I watch your videos, a taste of home! Is Oy vey PA German or Yiddish or both? Yeah, sooner or later all of Kutzishtetl will be PA German! Teach all them colletch kits at KU -- make PA German the language requirement. Yeah, "Go** fer dumsei!" Ei, yi, yi!

Now I wish for a tutorial on how to integrate PA Dutch words into my everyday German language ;)
