I agree, there are some lyrics that definitely have a more intimate connotation, but he wanted it to be about a family, so that does include his mom, who had to grow up without the father figure. It's been only two years I know this song. First listened to it on American got talent sang by a young man who lost his best friend. I searched for it and since then, a day can't go by without me listening to it and 😭 at same time. This is really a master piece not only feeling the words but feeling the emotions it comes with.
