As an Arizona State fan, there's been nothing but optimism surrounding this hire among ASU fans. I wouldn't be surprised if ASU rebounds a little quicker, maybe 2-3 years, and I have to admit that it is a little exciting that the Territorial cup could be a way more competitive rivalry with stakes involved.
Video on UMass football? Possibly the worst FBS football program and in the last 20 years the worst team to move up from the FCS ranks. They won fcs in 1999 and as recently as the mid 2000s were playing in the fcs title game. Nowadays it's a dumpster fire.
Kennys coaching tree all stems from ASU. From going to a local high school and coaching there while a student at ASU, to then working under Mike Norvell when he was OC at Arizona St. Kenny D and Lanning know each other because Lanning was a GA at ASU under Graham as well. Kenny will kill it at ASU , he bleeds for maroon and gold and is maybe the first coach to understand how to win at ASU since Frank Kush.
I think this is a good hire but I am hoping ASU will be as patient with Dillingham as Oregon State was with their head coach. That patience is now paying dividends and dillingham has a lot of hard work ahead of rebuilding the team so he will need that patience.
Sun Devil here. Since I'm a college football freak I told everyone leading up to this past year's game I was worried about EMU. Everyone was saying they aren't good but I told them, they've been solid for a few years now and are well coached, this is exactly the type of game they need to worry about. Sure enough what I worried about came true because Creighton is just a good coach and he's worked wonders since being at EMU.
Dillingham's staff currently ranked #3 in the nation for transfers, landing Pyne from ND, Frost from Nevada, Jake Smith from USC, and other solid additions. He's already made a massive impact at ASU, and that's not including the offensive prowess he brings.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this hire!!!!! His passion is off the charts!!!!! Now, get EVERY cable and satellite provider (not just Cox Cable) to carry ALL the ASU games. Do whatever you have to do, but get EVERY provider (Cox, Dish, DirectTV, etc.) to carry every single game. These young kids do not remember the days when ALL Sun Devils games were televised, and there was a sense of pride and ownership for this team. Now, unless you are a Cox Cable subscriber, you CANNOT see an ASU game. UNACCEPTABLE!!!!! You are missing out on a HUGE fan base, because they cannot see you. Out of sight, out of mind. I hope he works with the nutrition coach to get our players beefed up. Primary example of our nutrition coach failing is Jayden Daniels. He was so skinny with us and LSU needed him up and look how he’s playing. beef our players up!!!
Watching this the day that ASU plays oregon. I like dilly, he has solid game plans and with all the injuries ASU has had he isnt doing too bad, besides fresno and utah i dont think we are doing as bad as a lot of people thought. We couldve beat washington had it not been for that pick 6. Usc was a decently close game, we beat ucla. As long as we can get the trenches on both sides of the ball figured out, along with a QB that can stay healthy, we will be fine in the coming years and i think he should stay for a long time. Its all about recruiting now for ASU. #forksup
Very mid about this hire because somewhere inside of me, I wish we hired a really defensive guy because ASU has always struggled greatly defensively. Also, being in the PAC-12, a solid defense would be extremely beneficial because of the lack of defensive teams in the conference. However, I do like this hire because of the energy and his "Strong" recruiting ability. So far we haven't seen much from the transfer portal, but we still have plenty of time left.
I wouldn't be too worried about this hire if he can bring in a good dc they should be fine I like this hire because he is a young local guy who is an excellent recruiter and comes from a good program. big kudos to asu for this hire.
what do u mean we haven’t gotten much from the transfer portal? have u been keeping up with it at all??? not to mention we got drew pyne which is a great addition
@@dabear7822 yes I agree we got quite a bit from the portal. I like the notre dame qb pyne and the rb we got brooks so far things have been really good.
@@dabear7822 From what I saw on some ESPN talk thingy, it said ASU was currently ranked #11 in the PAC-12 in recruiting. But I know we have made some good additions to the team, like Drew Pyne.
This was a great hire, will it work out? Who knows as history says all hires are crapshoots. The key is ASU's history for over 30 years is hire a guy internally, Larry Marmie, hire a proven coach, Bill Snyder, hire the up and coming young coach with offensive background who coached at Boise St, Dirk Koetter, hire the guy with national championships and pro experience, Dennis Erickson, hire a guy who believes in discipline and good head coaching success at the group of 5 level, Todd Graham, then outside the box hire of older guy to have a "pro model" in Herm Edwards. We've tried almost every combination with the ASU administration putting an emphasis on former head coaching experience and the results are over 30 years of mediocrity with the occasional good to great season. Getting a young guy with Valley ties who is also hiring a mixture of experience and young guys who are absolute beasts in terms of recruiting is exactly the route we need to try. Other programs like Georgia, Oregon, Clemson, and many others have hired guys who weren't former head coaches at other schools and they did fine so emphasizing trying to find the right guy and not being caught up on whether he was a former head coach is exactly what they needed to do. They've boxed themselves in for over 30 years so they finally opened up and tried something new. It could be a trainwreck, especially with potential sanctions, but better to try a route you haven't tried before that other programs have had success with than trying the same old thing that wasn't working.
I think this hire was a good move. Marshall you gave a great chronology. As an ASU alum and former lacrosse player there I've watched this program's continued mediocrity with occasional flashes of both brilliance and despair. The program has really gone nowhere. Herm had us moving in the right direction the first three years and you could see things beginning to happen till he apparently lost complete control of his recruiting efforts and those personnel. Herm pretty much left ASU in complete disgrace and a quitter IMO. Extremely disappointed in the man. He left us holding the bag. Good luck to Dillingham and staff. Recruiting services can rank us last for all I care. Planning and coaching with average to above average players can take a school a long way. Look at what Whittingham has built at Utah. Or for that matter Kansas State and TCU.
Well, Dillingham didn’t get Dante Moore. Then again, neither did Oregon. As an Oregon fan, I can’t blaime him. Chip Kelly is a great offensive mind and good developer of QB talent. Here’s hoping Dillingham does great at ASU. Well, except against Oregon.
They actually didn’t get “boat races” by Ok St. They were down by 3 to start the 4th. But yeah, disaster of a season. I’m optimistic about the hire. Seems so many teams are going with the young guys as HC’s. Maybe they connect with these soft kids better?
Couple things. 1) Shap-puh-rell HS 2) Dillingham and Lanning’s connection goes back to their days as assistants at ASU under Graham, not just Memphis. (With Norvell)
3) Moore isn’t coming to ASU. Not with Drew Pyne committing to the Devils. Izzy Carter decommitted from the move as well. 4) In the 4 weeks he’s been at ASU. He’s had more than 1 commit per day. With some great hires (Samples and Carrington), they’re looking at flipping 4 4⭐️ guys in 2 months (2 already signed, 2 potential announcements.) Dillingham has been an A-A+ hire so far with what he’s accomplished in the short timeframe.
I think it's just an easy hire, because ASU can't afford a big time hire with sanctions. Boom or bust this guy is going to struggle early adjusting to being the head guy and not just the coordinator
At this point I think we have just accepted the fact that we are going to have to rebuild and take a couple bad seasons. It's just so terrible what Herm did to us.
Kenny dillingham screwed Oregon in the final game vs Oregon state I was at that game and he didn’t care at all while coaching that game he was doing the same plays 3 times in a row at the goal line and things like that annoying as hell
ASU AD is terrible. AD should have been gone with Edwards. If that is not clear look at their varsity programs. Except for hockey none are performing up to expectations. ASU should have one of the top teams in all sports every year. Tempe is a dream location for sports. The hire is a joke and will not turn anything around. I really enjoy your content, but I’ve got to point something out-and you aren’t the only one saying this. Bo Nix didn’t get coaches into some miraculous turnaround. Did a new environment and new voice help? Absolutely. But the biggest factor was that he went from facing 11 savages per snap in the SEC to virtually nonexistent defenses in the PAC-12. To further illustrate this point look at his performance in the first game of the year. Sure, first games are often shaky, and the defense he was facing definitely has the ability to skew some statistics, but I still believe this is the best way to explain his turnaround.
Are we gonna forget that Bo Nix and his Ducks' got absolutely slaughtered by Georgia. I didn't like the Bo Nix hype/praise because to me that game was the Ducks' reality check. The Ducks' did this last year too. They were a 1 loss team and ranked #3 in the country and once they played tough competition, they immediately racked up 4 losses. The sad truth is that the PAC-12 got praise this year, but once we exit our conference we show what we really were all season and we disappoint like always.
The Arizona schools stand a very real chance of becoming relegated to a non-power conference, within the next 3 years. This is a MAC-level hire, as well. I wish the program well, but the possible penalties could not be coming at a worse time. I would not be surprised to see the outcome being MWC membership, in 3 years. Everything is contingent upon the future of the Pac12, specifically Cal. As a native Californian, I know the university politics: There is no way that UC will ever accept or vote for Pac12 membership for a CSU school, and there are also only 3 CSU schools that would even be equipped to move into the Pac12 (SDSU, SJSU, Fresno State). There would be the need of a 4th school to become the travel partner for basketball and other sports; UNLV? Perhaps the best hope for the Arizona schools to remain relevant nationally (which they largely are not) would be Big12 membership. Some pundits have already speculated that Utah and Colorado would join the AZ schools as a bloc to join the Big12. Not only would such a move make complete sense geographically, but competitively, as well, seeing as how defense is somewhat of an alien concept in that league. Having a brilliant offensive mind at HC works well, in such a situation. The only way that this scenario is likely to happen would be the poaching of the PNW schools by another league. Many people point to the B1G to make that happen, but the OR and WA legislatures both enacted laws requiring that the Power5 teams in the individual states to both be in the same league. Those who pick UO and UW to the B1G are thus pipe-dreaming, as the B1G likely does not want OSU and WSU. What if the B1G poaches the Bay Area schools? This is far more likely, and would enable the Pac12 to bring in the 3 aforementioned CSU schools, and UNLV...or it could enable the PNW bloc to merge into the rump MWC to form a new league that might have some competitive viability in the eyes of TV. In short, I foresee Pac12 fragmentation: The southeastern part of the league to the Big12 will be concurrent with the PNW schools going elsewhere, with my money being on the rump MWC. ASU Football as a whole has to consider every angle that I have pointed out here, and maintain fiscal responsibility. The net result will be mediocrity for most of the remainder of the decade. At least ASU Hockey is trending in a good direction, with a pair of top 10 recruiting classes, and making the NCAA Sweet 16 already (program went D1 in 2017). The program sells itself to recruits; new facility, great weather, and one look at the coeds likely seals the deal, too. There will be a national title banner hanging in Mullet Arena by 2030.
