The right decision? The only decision. And one we didn't see coming. It was defeat staring us in the face by gosh and he throws a "hail Mary" and that rarely works but it stuck! It was a play where we thought we'd tried everything (within reason, because we don't want to grind away the entire stone), but it just wasn't giving. By the way, they are in a word, "Stunning"! There is no other way to have shown the color, Brilliant, both the stone and your decision.
Same here. I saw that beautiful color on the cut faces and thought just keep slicing! What a lovely collar necklace that would have made with eight or nine graduated pendants.
@@PinnixThat would have been gorgeous too as well.😊 Maybe going from largest to smallest towards the back? Then small earnings to match. Guessing Justin knew what would make the most $ for the piece at that point. At $3,300 I am guessing for 1 pair, very few could have afforded the whole necklace perhaps?
When Justin cut that thing open and basically gasped *out loud* with all of the Opals he's seen you know it was something spectacular to make him do that. He's no newbie to this game so that kind of reaction was just beautiful.
You saved a potential flop and got some stunning earrings out of the process! The jewelry design is brilliant. Those long bars connecting two ends with spacing to allow light in from more directions shows how experience makes the difference.
What a tough gem to cut. I think you did the right thing, since you couldn't go back in time and NOT buy it. A bunch of very unique and beautiful sets of earrings. NICE!
I would hope this video goes to show you that doubting yourself will get you nowhere ❤ You have massive talent and the earrings are extremely beautiful!!!! Keep up the wonderful work good friend 👍 you've got what it takes to find tge diamond in the rough every single time 💎 ❤Congratulations 👏
Fabulous - I love the way the designer has created the pillars of silver on either side of the opal, the silver mounts are just perfect. So much classier than using gold. Top notch!
As an artist I too am familiar with the Oh Hell now what moment. But that’s when all your skill is put to the test and you wind up with a design that is totally original and unexpected! Thanks for letting us in on the behind-the-scenes side of the actual jewelry designing aspect of BOD. I have been following you for years now and I never knew your wife was a talented and gifted jewelry designer! Now I want more of Ruth! What she does, how she thinks, how she does it… Her side of the business is equally as fascinating as your side! Come on Ruth, don’t be camera shy! We want to know all about you too!
Oh yes, yes, yes! Any woman worth her salt would be proud to wear this stunning creation. The beauty of the stones is showcased in that simple yet elegant design. I love them!❣💯
Black opal Lemons to Black Opal Lemonade, well played! I love how off road opal cutting sometimes leads to the most interesting outcomes. This is the way.
Justin, you're one of the few who could have pulled this off! You make magic happen when it looks like there's no hope to recoup your cost! WOW, those earrings are stunning! You have that ability to turn a deficit into a profit! Catch you on the next.✌️ 😊
That was very strange for the color to face from the side but at least you got it figured out before you lost all of that beautiful blue color and was able to get such amazing pieces of jewelry!!! Congratulations Justin and Ruth y’all are the perfect couple ❤❤❤❤❤
Oh, yet another lovely video! It must be a lot of fun holding a rough opal, because you’ve got SO MANY POSSIBILITIES. I’m sure you think of all the potential a stone has, and then I can see why grinding and grinding and grinding would be so disheartening. It’s hard to be an artist and have your materials run amok. Ruth’s design is really gorgeous. I love the shape she designed for the earrings you ultimately showed us. I think the visual weight of it is just PERFECT. And the bezel…thank you SO MUCH, Ruth, my brain is full of new possibilities! I’m thinking about bezels in a completely new way and I’m profoundly grateful!
Those came out amazing and you have the remaining pieces to have made into something nice as well. The solid black pauch just brings out the color bands so well. Thinking outside the box really ended up making something special.
You know that saying it ain’t over till the lady sings. Well this lady sung and created a beautiful pair of earrings. Love them. Nice job to all that worked on this opal. 😊
Gorgeous! I was saying at the start, slice it! As soon as you cut the pointy end off, then the beauty was revealed. Very art deco in feel. A good purchase after all the stress!
I thought before you did that slicing the opal like you did is what I would've done. Their beautiful and I'm sure you'll get your money back plus profit! 😊 love your show! 😊😊
I don't know anything about this, but I have a question. Is the color apparent in one orientation, but not the other due to a grain structure and direction? I'm thinking like a woodworker here, where looking at the end-grain side of a board is different than side-grain. Thanks for the video, and the design worked out nicely. Did you recover your investment on that stone?
Nice save ! I was sweating it out with you Justin. Watching this. That 1st cut at the saw really had me hyped we were going to see something really spectacular, then, as each millimeter was rubbed away my heart sank with yours and I couldn’t help thinking “Oh no ! What’s he going to do !!!” You pulled a freaking rabbit out of your hat ! Kudos sir ! And yes, we DID see something spectacular… A spectacular save… And some equally spectacular sets of earrings ! So happy it worked out lol.
my first instinct was to slice it into pieces i had many pieces like that they don't normally face with those broken colour patterns i was like no don't face it from top thank you Justin another great vid the earings are a great design who is the jeweller?
Once again another Master Class in opal cutting!@ I dont think i could have pulled it off like you professor. AMAZING COLORS IN THAT OPAL!@ NO REDS OR GREENS BUT I THINK THEY WERE AMAZING!@🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I think you made a great choice. I was as excited as you at first. I'm a driller and have drilled all over the world. So I've seen a lot of different materials. Great video.
Those are absolutely stunning my mother would love these! She’s never had an opal in her life and I keep trying to convince her that she needs some lol you beautiful beautiful beautiful beautiful beautiful work

Good decision !! The pairs are amazing !!!! A necklace with all of them would have been also spectacular !!!!!
I was yelling cut them sideways 😂😂😂 they turned out beautiful ❤❤

They’re beautiful!❤️ I think you made the right decision!
Thank you Mary
That white webbing on the black, with the electric blue, was stunning in its own right!
Right? I have no idea why people see that as a flaw. To me it's stunning like that.
Those pieces are beautiful. I think opals have magic in them.

You have an amazing talent to turn a what if stone into must have jewels. Just so beautiful.
Those Earing's look amazing the way that they are paired up, you usually manage to make the right decision in the end.
You always seem so at peace when you're working on opals even when you say you're frustrated. Thanks for sharing.
