  • The relics of St. Matthew rest in the Abbey. the apostle Matthew, who by lot replaced the fallen Judas. Built by Constantine the Great in 310, the flat brick basilica, even today, when the palace has been completely reconstructed, impresses with its majestic and austere simplicity. In the window niches of the Constantine Basilica, whose floor was once lined with black and white marble, and the walls are decorated with marble inlays, there are remnants of paintings. Since the 12th century, this building has been the bishop's palace. Completely built in the 17th century into the elector's castle, the huge hall was converted in 1846-1856 by the order of the Prussian king into an evangelical church. With the exception of the wooden coffered ceiling, the basilica is completely devoid of decorations.
