I've noticed that the Korean music industry trains their singers to proritize a bright, hyper nasal straight-tone sound. It blends well for groups and it carries over a densely produced track. The problem that you get from that is that you have to sing in a small amount of resonant space for that sound. The smaller the space, the less room for air to vibrate. In order to get a more natural vibrato she'd need to open up a bit, but that might compromise the tone quality she's going for. SO you get what the vocal world refers to as a bleating vibrato which typically happens when you try to push *too much* air into not enough space and your vocal folds vibrate faster than normal. I think she's likely not interested in changing this bc it's part of her distinctive sound but long term it can cause vocal damage and likely already has. Not altogether bad if that's the quality you want but it's probably difficult for her to sing other ways. But yeah in order for her to get that vibrato in that space she has to push harder to control the sound, therfore: tension.
A number of these songs were made with Tablo from Epik High or with his support because YG was just wasting her away in their dungeon so he directed an album for her in his sub label. She also got Breath because SHINee Jonghyun thought it would suit her but wanted his involvement secret so he contacted Tablo and it wasn't revealed until she recorded and YG approved it.
Bless Tablo for having her come out of the YG dungeon. Her and G.Soul got stuck in their label’s dungeon despite their incredible voices. Their stories make me so angry for them.
She is an awesome singer. If you want to get a treat, see her duets with Akmu’s Lee Su hyun. They compliment each other so well. I really love when they do Begin Again Korea show. It’s live, busking around in Korea and do either their own music or covers. Different singers, musicians and actors are invited. There are a lot of really good performances.

I don’t care that I am a whole year late or if you’ll see this but H.S.K.T. (머리어깨무릎발) was, is, and will forever be my favorite song by LeeHi. It’s just a masterpiece and I’ve never gotten tired of it since its release in 2021.

I LOVE Lee Hi I just know her lower tones are beautiful and I wish Korean palate allowed for those more alto and baritone tones to shine. It’s kind of like everyone wants to sing high all the time. I don’t hate it but I would like a little more variety😅

Been listening to Lee hi since 2016 and from the same album where 'Breathe' is (jonghyun made it for her) the song 'Missing u' I find it so emotional in such a different way than ONLY. You should check out the album 4Only it has great songs ^^

You’re right for her straining at high notes, bit tension compare to her young self back in 2016. You should check her performances for Immortal Songs with Jeon Inkwon. You could listen her notes are clearer there, it seems like she changes her way of singing since 2019(?) that way it’s sounds quite straining now
Lee Hi has such a good voice that I always melt when listening to her songs. I'd say AOMG is a way better fit for her than YG was. Even though she said YG was supportive...I don't think she would have the freedom to produce the music she wanted as much. Also, AOMG artists have a more similar taste/vibe as her and she has a lot of people she can work with and trust there.
i think you would pretty much enjoy her songs and albums. she's very rnb, especially her latest album "4only". also seoulite album! produced under highgrnd/epik high tablo, dj tukutz. it's more on hiphop/rnb/soul side than kpop because yg didn't know what to do with her lol and passed her to tablo's label.
