- Finally got this digitalized from the original VHS! This is me and Mats' first TV gig recorded in Umeå 1981. Mats (10 years old) is being interviewed by a classical pianist, and their conversation is soo funny! (Thanks Carlos for the added subtitles). Worth to mention is that I sent a copy of this VHS to Frank Zappa just a few months before he passed away (since we play Franks piece King Kong on this video). Called Gail Zappa later on to express my condolences, and just before we hang up Gail says "by the way, Frank watched the video that you sent, and he really loved it". That was great to hear cause I wasn't sure the vhs even reached his house. ❤️
There are a hundred likes for every dislike on this video, but I am still stunned that 13 people could give a thumbs-down to a 10-year-old self-taught blind kid playing Frank Zappa.

Thumb might have slipped, might have touched it and not noticed, a call came through or somesuch... distracted, watching on mobile, a lot can happen
For instance, while using a phone, the viewer might realize they hate joy, or despise music.

there’s an interview amidst a large complication of invertviews on youtube, like 9 hours long total. somewhere in there he talks about how he was really impressed by these kids. i had no idea there was footage of this performance

The interaction between Inger, the female interviewer and Mats is very respectful and touching.
Love how the sound guy just picks up the bass and starts killing it.
He didn't say he learns by absolute pitch, he said he learns by ear as opposed to sheet music.
Man Zappa was something special. It changed my life when I discovered his music. I don't think he will ever be displaced from my number 1

Same. I was 13 around 1977 when I got exposed to Zappa. Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation. I was just starting to play drums and that was the album I attempted to play along with along with various Rush, Jean Luc Ponty and Mahavishnu. I refused to listen to the radio on my own. Of course I heard most of the drivel on the pop and rock stations. Zappa is definitely #1, followed by Jean Mclaughlin (especially Shakti) and Miles Davis.
Speechless! This is a gem. How can we loose faith when a ten year old kid and his rocking teenage combo can find joy in this timeless music. Keep the joy alive... where there is darkness, let there be ZAPPA!
Today I learned: Mats is blind, M/M were both prodigies, and music has been a little more interesting since the year I was born.

Europeans have a more sophisticated ear for music. There are more Jazz clubs in Germany and Holland alone than in the entire US. Americans get spoon fed what sells commercially.

Martino Tagliani The guy on bass is Lennart Jonsson and he's not Morgans father. Almost sure that Lennart with his family lived in the same terrace house in Umeå, Sweden as Mats and his family.

It's amazing how, even though mats piano technique is far from perfect, you can clearly see his musicality shining through, putting correct phrasing on a rather confusing, syncopatious tune like King Kong.

They also played with Frank Zappa in 1986 or 1989 i am not sure they were like 16 or 18 at the Time.
Of course I know that...Mats/Morgan is one of my all time fav bands...
It was 1988 when they first played with Zappa...but not the last time...

I didn't know that! But Frank was a really good guy who'd often do things with his fans (no, not groupies).
If he liked something, he really liked something. And if he didn't, he'd never turn down the opportunity to
talk, debate or even perform with his enemies. Not saying that Morgan was an enemy, though! :)
