I was assigned to the 46th Engr Bn, D Co. in 70-71. Our Bn was located near gate 2. My company built some structures at LBJ while I was there. Was there when Gen Westmoreland came over and addressed the troops. Did some time at Bearcat, Mace, Phu Loi, Lai Khe. Seems like last week.
what a different base than it was in in 1965, I arrived there in June of 1965 with the 576th Ord Company (Ammo) . we lived in tents that we had to put up.. Showered as a group under a hose attached to a water truck lifted by a fork lift. Shaved and washed up in steel pots..Weapons in racks (unlocked) in the center of the tents. I was in commo but attached to the QRF. We patrolled the perimeter of the ammo dump and set up in And hill looking bunkers at night. We were probed once in a while but that tapered off as more units and personnel were assigned to the "camp". Nothing like it was later on. I don't even recognize it from the later pics.
I was there for one day. I think it was October 13, 1968. They had the world series on TV playing and I was trying to make bets with the guys there on the outcome but no one would fall for it. I had seen the game the day before.
When I arrived in country 1968, this was the replacement camp where you had to do shit details until your name was called at one of three formations a day. There were hundreds of men in the formation. They might read off a hundred names and say these men going to the 1st Infantry Division, or the 11th Armored Cav, etc.. After calling off what they had, the remaining men were assigned to shit details as slave labor for the REMF's who were permanently assigned there. Those fat slob E-6 lifers who supervised the shit details, KP, filling sand bags, painting the rocks, burning latrine shit, etc.. wouldn't have lasted one night in the jungle. I think I was there about four days before my name was called. Went to the Americal Division, was wounded in October and medevaced back to the states.
