Spring in Kyoto, weeping cherry blossoms at Kamigamo shrine & Kyoto Botanical Gardens

Kamigamo shrine, or Kamigamo jinja in Japanese, is the oldest Shinto shrine in Kyoto (Kita Ward). A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, it was built in 678.
There are two big cherry trees in bloom between the first and second Torii gates in spring.
The first one is called "Gosho-zakura", which has lived for 150 years and was given by Emperor Komyo from Kyoto Imperial Palace, while the second is called "Saio-zakura".
Compared to other trees in Kyoto city, these trees are late bloomers.
The first tree blooms before the second (Saio-zakura). It blooms from mid-March to mid-April.
On May 15th, Aoi festival is held at this shrine. A grand procession of participants dressed in traditional attire of the Heian period (794-1185) travel from Kyoto Imperial Palace to Kamigamo shrine. It is one of the three largest and most popular festivals in Kyoto alongside the Gion festival(Gion Matsuri)in July and the Festival of the Ages (Jidai matsuri).

Cherry blossoms at Kyoto Botanical Gardens
The Kyoto botanical gardens were founded in 1924, Japan's oldest public botanical garden.
The gardens are 24,000㎡ and grow 2,000 species of plants.
The entrance fee is 200 JPY per person (150 JPY for high school students), free for children and the elderly (over 70 years old).
In the garden, there are more than 500 cherry trees of 180 varieties. Somei-yoshino, the most popular variety, blooms at the beginning of April.
Over 55 years have passed since the giant weeping cherry tree known as "O-shidare-zakura" was planted. This is a sister tree of the weeping cherry tree planted at Maruyama park. You can see both of them with good timing.

上賀茂神社と植物園は歩いてもいけるので、ぜひ訪れてください。賀茂川沿いの桜並木もおすすめです。上賀茂神社は紫式部も参拝したようです。
