Your videos are always so interesting ❤️. My grandmas all had weekly appointments at the beauty parlor-as they called them. My grandma died last year at 97 and up until her passing she had a weekly hair appointment.
This was so interesting! My mom bought me a Crazy Curl curling iron when I was in Junior high. I totally forgot about that green color until watching this! Thanks for choosing that clip. All this history is interesting. Makes sense now that my grandmothers thought my shampoo was “fancy”. They just used the bar soap they used on their body to wash their hair! 😬
I recall using my granny’s Lady Sunbeam to achieve that 80’s-early 90’s big hair and finishing with her Taft Schwarzkopf hairspray. My favorite shampoo back in the days was Clairol Herbal Essences and it smelled beautiful, like pure real herbs. How much I miss it! Still a big fan of Klorane and Batiste dry shampoo they are perfect when traveling! I enjoyed this video so much!
All of those 80s commercials bring back memories. I’d forgotten about the crazy curl. Such a great video! PS: I’ve always loved the flapper style bobs of the 20s. Lately I’ve been loving the 70s Farrah styles.
Thanks Laura. Very interesting video. I have my mom's table top mounted plastic hair dryer. Similar to the one you showed at 12:35. Also, if anyone is interested Abby Cox has a couple of videos about pomade and powder. One shows how to make it and the other one shows that she used it for a year rather than wash her hair, while she worked at Colonial Williamsburg. They used it to keep their hair and scalps clean and smelling okay. They also used it to aid in the hairstyles in the 1700s and beyond.
This was so interesting! My mom was a hairdresser ( and was still doing hair until she was 86!) I have 2 of her old 1960s hood dryers...one on a portable pole and one salon chair dryer. Still work great.

I remember my first hair dryer in the late 60's. It simplified drying time. One had to watch out to avoid getting burned by the hose.

I enjoy the history of beauty products , perfumes, cosmetics and hair essentials as subject matter over the ones about particular movie stars, probably because there is soooo much on UA-cam on any and every star already. Focusing on the product history is unique to you, and your research and passion make for a unique watch for a niche subject. Some of the ones in the early days I found simply fascinating. I hope more like these are forthcoming, because it just puts you in another world! Those product /commercials etc. visuals from the 20's-60's are simply fabulous! 💄
Curling tongs have been around for a long time. There’s a funny scene in Little Women” where Jo is using tongs that have been heated in the fire to curl Meg’s hair for a ball. Being Jo she gets distracted and leaves them in too long and a chunk of poor Meg’s hair is burned and falls off. I remember when Pert first came out and I thought what a great idea and tried it. It wasn’t. All it did was make my hair greasy as soon as it dried. I liked it so much I used it once. During my lifetime my favourite hair fashion, and clothing fashion, era was the 1990s. Styles were very sleek, sophisticated and rather reminiscent of the 1950s. Think Princess Diana at her most stylish and sophisticated. Students and misguided movie stars were wearing grunge but professional women were probably better dressed than they had been since the 1950s.
There’s a scene in Bonanza where they use the curling tongs as well. You can still acquire those old fashioned Marcel tongs in different sizes and a little oven to heat them. They’re extremely tricky and dangerous to use though 🙀
Even though I grew up in the 90’s I remember my mom’s hairdresser used a gas heater for her curling tongs and would use them on my hair. I don’t miss the burnt hair smell but I do miss the beautiful curls she would create with them!
I learned a lot from this. There were a lot of celebrities in the clips you showed, other than the two pointed out, Donna Mills and Farrah, there were Susan Dey, Angela Cartwright, Annette Funicello and Louise Mandrell. My mother was a beautician, and she would heat a curling iron over the flame to curl my hair and I remember she would put lemon juice in my hair and tell me to go out in the sun to get highlights in my hair. I remember growing up we used Lilt home perms and the first electric rollers were steam rollers which didn't keep a curl. Two simple improvements were coated rubber bands and the long bobby pins. My favorite time frame for hair styles were 1976-1980 and Farrah revolutionized hair with her cut by Jose Eber and I remember a lot of people were wearing the Dorothy Hamill cut, and it was popular during that same time frame. I appreciate the research you go into for your videos.
Very interesting and professionally made video. It is a tribute to women and their pursuit of beauty and pride that has led to the creation of new industries and products to make our lives better. I remember like yesterday my single and hard-working mother with two children and her long, peaceful and patient hair salon visits in the 50s and early 60s. My mother never washed her hair at home. Her hairdresser for many years, Lucia, took care of her curly hair 2-3 times a month. My mom always had long and red painted nails, didn't wear makeup, just red lipstick and compact powder. Her parfum was Miss Dior which I also use, sometimes, to get closer to her. Not only her hair was exquisitely groomed but so were her clothes and underwear. She never worked out but walked everywhere in high-heeled pumps. She was also an extraordinary cook and kept all religious traditions to the letter. The men swarmed around her but she chose the worst. Like so many women of the time, she was given psychotropic drugs to cope with life, which made her sick and changed her serene personality. Times change in the same way as hair styling and fashion in general. It is not so strange that we try to look back to certain time periods.Because it was better before, for a short time, even though some say it's a chimera. I can make a list of things that were better in my early childhood compared to now.

I really wanted to get one of those fascinating vintage hairdryers myself until I came across warnings online of the danger of asbestos exposure from them! 😮 (I'm thankful they changed laws to stop making newer hairdryers with asbestos!) Over time, the asbestos in older hairdryers can start to break down and then be blown out of the hairdryer during use! So I decided to give up on getting an old one. Ideally, I wish someone could figure out how to upgrade the vintage hairdryers to make them safe to use!
I remember using Minipoo. It came with a cloth to fit over your brush bristles to help remove the powder. It was almost impossible to get the powder out of your hair. I usually just gave up and shampooed.

Yuck. I wash my hair every single day. I feel disgusting if I miss a day, and that’s quite rare that I ever miss a day. I could never imagine having to protect my hair from rats or using perfume to cover the “stench”. FYI-it doesn’t work. I am already imagining the scent of flowers and filth. I am thankful for living in modern times😂. Your videos are excellent Laura, and your research is impeccable!
I know! I wash my hair every other day and usually on day 2 my hair is in a ponytail. Since Covid and working from home, I’ve gotten lazier I guess. My mom only washes her hair twice a week but it never stinks and she wears it short and styles it with lots of hairspray. I think as we age our hair/scalps dry out (like everything else).
My aunt gave my mom a Lady SunBeam hair dryer and blow dryer. I remember being a little girl and drying my hair on that shower cap like hair dryer. It was painful. I will dry my hair in its entirety. But gee it was painful.
I usually air dry my hair and I usually don't like hair spray I feel it being sticky I love using creams after I wash my hair and I have thick curly hair, I do need to start using dry shampoo iv never tried that before

Lovely and informative video! I love the 20s-late 60s for hairstyles. I even love the ringlets (sausage curls) that were popular in the Edwardian period until the 20. Popular amongst the likes of Mary Pickford, such an adorable hairstyle. I also really love Shirley Temples baby curls! 💚
I so wish that the original Herbal Essence shampoo of the 70s would return. The fragrance lingered in your hair. It was heavenly.
