Assad protected them and women didnt have to wear islamic dress. I have spoken to quite a few Syrians here in Germany where i now live and they said they had good lives under Assad. They had plenty of criticisms of him but they said if he was driven out there would be big problems and this was in 2016 when i was in a German language class for 6 months and for them it was all free including free travel, they moaned because they had to pay for their course books. There were 22 in the class, 16 were Syrians, and one Somalian and the rest of us had to pay a montly fee (2 Greeks married to Germans one Serb and my Albanian friend and myself. The Greek ladies got their money back because their husbands worked and paid taxes.
So if they were so content, how come you met them in Germany? How is it that 16/22 of the class were from that "tolerant" regime? Have we all forgotten the 560000 dead Syrians? The atrocities of chemical weapons? The dead children trying to make it to safety?
Syria was a police state with no freedom of the press. I don't think you can really take the word of a handful of Syrians. If you want to be disturbed, look into the stories coming out about Sednaya Prison - it's like something straight out of a horror film.
Are the Christians not severely disadvantaged by all of the 'love your enemy as yourself' stuff when they are dealing with a persecutor who acts the opposite way?
I'm sure it was only about 24 hours ago when Spectator TV was reporting that now the 'monster' Assad has been overthrown, Syria would become a land of rainbows and unicorns.
Where is the money coming from to back whom? If we had the answer to that we would know what is going to happen and what policy our own governjment will follow. Maybe we should just ask the UN what we should do as usual. Certainly there will be no international outcry on behalf of Christians.
I listened to this I don’t think that Christianity will ever be weakened in Syria or Lebanon. These two locations are like the bedrock of the early church of Christ it withstood tremendous challenges in the past and will continue to come back stronger. That is my opinion.
If only today’s: “the christians and the Muslims” of that particular (Asia minor location - the levant) that we are talking about; if they only knew that in essence …the true Islam can be known and viewed as a different expression of a Christianity spoken in a different language. And if: The Jewish faith can come to terms with the fact that in the levant as in Asia Minor- semitism that it is the background of the people of the christian and Muslims faith alike; If only these two factors are acknowledged …the three faiths people from the Levant can start the disentanglement that have lasted now for centuries… and would have the rusty key open the door to a much needed peace.
Thank You for a most informative episode. I see now how it makes sense, but did not realise that the Syrian Christians had been the originals until it was pointed out by you in this video. I hope The Russians can fix things up in Damascus,
I think the colonisation of Christians (note NOT ‘BY’ Christians) in the middle east has been lngoing for a long time. Only the Jews have an older religion in the middle east. ISLAM IS A LATE COMER - but a successful coloniser. . And it IS the business of the UK - the UK has been a Christian culture for millennia. Islamic colonisation looks like expanding to the UK. So it IS the UK business that the cradle of Christian civilisation not vanish…because the alternative isn’t a secular country but an Islamic one.
@8.57 Incorrect statement. There are countries in the Middle East (with a Muslim majority) in which Christians can practice openly: Lebanon, Qatar, Oman, Dubai, Egypt. Judaism and Christianity can be practised openly in the UAE. Stopped listening after hearing this inaccurate remark.
Excellent interview about an important but overlooked topic. Thank you!

Western countries wake up
Really excellent interview. Thanks to all.
Are the Christians not severely disadvantaged by all of the 'love your enemy as yourself' stuff when they are dealing with a persecutor who acts the opposite way?
Well Israel is all that counts. It's the Christian way.
I would say that they are already severely disadvantaged by being a minority in a country controlled by radical Islamists
Yes, if you take a merely earthly or this-worldly view of the situation.
We should abandon this mentality in the West and take control of the government, as a majority it wouldn't be that difficult😊
Incredibly thought provoking

Ah. Would anybody want rainbows and unicorns? We've got rainbows and unicorns everywhere and they're bad news.
Don't worry David Lammy is sending them 50 Million what could possibly go wrong !
Henry the Seventh?
He will probably give them all asylum
They start on Saturday and finish on Sunday. That's the saying and exactly what happened in the Arab world.

Just tired of mid east. Peace Talks ALL my life; I’m 65. Boing!
I listened to this

You can't come back stronger if you've been murdered

great guest and interview!
please talk about Kurds too! They are in danger!
Why do you think they’re against importing them?
That didn't take long.
I assume Britain will offer these former French colonials asylum.
Interview Alistair Crooke
You won’t of course but you should
Syrians in small boats heading to Dover , big time.
Still none of the business of the UK.

Ummm, you forgot about Lebanon !!! Head of state has to be a Maronite Catholic. Surely, this Catholic priest would know this.
The prime minister also has to be a Sunni muslim
Also in israel
That is why Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t take sides in politics M
