In 1971 I was the only girl playing drums on a drum line in Miami Fla. I wrote a letter to FAMU asking if I could join the marching band but I was told no that it was an all male band, but in 1972 my letter allowed the band to allow girls in the band but by then I had already join the US AIR Force and could not get out to march in the band but I paved the way for girls to join the band.
The first girls I can remember were in 1974, they both played sax, one was name fennel and I forgot the other one but she was from jersey, my name was Crow 1974, cymbals,the same year Dr White,we called him Prof White back then came. By the way that was not the best slow one I’ve seen us do. Joe Bullard of course is magnificent as always, best announcer I’ve ever heard before or after, I’m not sure but I believe he my have started announcing in 74, very good timing,the best ever.
And you did. Someone told me about this years ago when the band was first allowed to admit women. You opened doors for a lot of young ladies.
Take note! This is what it was all about. Quality not quantity!! Bring these days back
Whomever voted thumbs down to the band is out of their minds I saw them in person marching against ole school southern university and in 1966 in Baton Rouge and Tennessee State University marching band and they blew my mind with Death march and not taking anything away from Southern's marching a dance routine to " Knock of Wood" by Sam and Dave and Tennessee State marching came the field with War by Edwin Star completely impressed at age 16 I am 67 years old liked all three bands back then better! It was at Tennessee State University in Nashville in 1970 marching with the Ocean Of Soul under Benjamin Butler III

If you we're in the opposing band, it was like running into a buzz saw in these days.
This was shot in 1985 at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida at FAMU verses BCC game.
FAMU played BCC in Tampa in 1985.

@@keeloneptune727: He is actually correct. A&M played Georgia Southern in 1985 at Jacksonville, Florida. My family and I always attended those Bold City Classic games! Great memories!

This takes me back to 1979. TSU vs FAMU at Vanderbilt stadium. TSU did the fast march and death march prior to 1979.

There was nothing like halftime in the Orange Bowl at the Orange Blossom Classic.
And the parade Overtown down 2nd Avenue was the place to be.
It was showtime of the greatest Marching Band ever.
Led by the legendary Doc Foster, they are still the best and the most awarded band ever.
Being a FAMU graduate, class of 1977, my gratitude to all the talented and dedicated Professors who taught what is is to a Black Student.

After completing graduate school in 1986 I went down to Georgia Southern University for a job interview. I chose another job because it allowed me to become a museum professional. But I love North Georgia a lot because this is where my grandmother was born. She helped to raise me. And I miss her a lot.
