    I now gig with a Nextone Artist- it sounds as good as any of the great valve amps I've used over the years as a working guitarist in numerous kinds of bands. The editing software is great, and you can tune the amp to sound just about like any amp you want. Get it on stage , turn it up and it's all there.

      So true- I still can't believe it- even though I own many tube/valve amps, I seem to mostly use my Nextone Stage and am ordering the 80 watt Artist version.

    The valves may sound a little better but for the guy in the bedroom jamming this Boss is hard to beat. It sounds great!

      For the guy on stage gigging this Boss is hard to beat. With a little editing and a careful ear, this thing can sound like any amp out there. Not exact, but the differences are so minor that it doesn't even matter.

    I have too many vintage 60's valve amplifiers as a collector and Player. I think SOLID State is the ultimate future for players.

  • @guitarclassics
    @guitarclassics 3 роки тому +17

    Everytime the tube amp sound is demonstrated the volume level is a tiny bit louder than the nextone which make many people really believe it sounds better than the nextone. Hence the loudness war. You really have to have a very well trained set of ears to really judge the sound-quality..... not the volume. Louder is NOT better!!!

    • @castleanthrax1833
      @castleanthrax1833 2 місяці тому

      Yes, I noticed the volume disparity and thought the same as you.
      One thing the boss will do much better than the valve amps is produce a better tone at low volumes... which is the big plus for solid state amps.

    • @addicted2tone349
      @addicted2tone349 5 років тому +3

      That's a misnomer.. I've ran the same tubes for several years on some of my amps. I'm a tube guy but I'm gonna buy one of these Boss amps..

    • @jazznotes3802
      @jazznotes3802 2 роки тому +1

      @@addicted2tone349 Not really! Valves/tubes degrade over the years, they need regular servicing to keep them sounding the same, they’re incredibly unpredictable, especially tone wise when you turn up at some old venue that has ageing electrics, heavy, fragile to temperature change & you need to warm them up before you can even play. (The list goes on)
      Do they react, respond and feel good to play? You bet! But some valve amps sound 💩 (worse than some SS amps) regardless of having tubes.
      If you’ve got a real good solid-state amp, it’ll sound consistently good regardless of the electricity ⚡️ or inconsistent current at a venue, plus being rugged & reliable.
      No fuss involved, you turn it on and play, maintenance free. (And that’s a big deal for me)
      The important thing to ask yourself is “are tube amps still needed?” The answer is no!
      Even I prefer the sound of a great tube amp over solid state, but the other factors even it out.
      At a pub/club know body is going to notice the difference or care these days. I’d much rather had some drunk guy/girl spill their drink on my sub £500 amp than £1500 tube amp, that’s for sure.

    Thanks Andy for the demo, did you try the Editor software to get closer to the valve amps. V2 is out now. I have the Boss 40 watt stage great little amp good feel under the fingers tubbish response takes pedals well but theres a miss with the speaker. It must be hard to design a speaker that does cleans crunch and high gain all in one at all volume levels. We know there specially designed like the Waza. I did try external cabs for that reason and yes dynamic range mids / highs / lows changed the chartactor but it wasn't as solid state fizzy it actually breathed more like a valve amp so speaker cab size enclosure ohms and power rating took up most of my day but I'm more aware of speaker and cab joice Cheers.

    Thanks for this. I own a Carr Rambler and just bought the Nextone Stage. I also bought a Heritage H535. I recently moved to Maui and didn't want to bring my '68 ES-335 and Carr Rambler with me because the environment can be tough on guitars and amps.
    The vintage 335 and Carr are like making love; making a commitment. The Nextone is like, well, making love without love and commitment. The H535 is like being kind of in love, btw.
    I bought the Nextone based on a stunning demo by Jeff Hornbeck at Bounty Guitars in Maui. He's played and heard everything and said for the money and convenience (WEIGHT!), this beat any amp in the shop (he's not only played a Dumble, he has photos of him and Mr. Dumble). Under his fingers, this is absolutely true. If your'e a distortion player, this is an inexpensive way to get phenomenal sounds. As a fairly straight forward player, it's not phenomenal exactly. Paraphrasing the poem "Dorthy" by poet Marvin Bell, its phenomenal "inexactly."
    Still sussing it out. Trying to decide whether to return it and get a Blues Junior, or ship my Carr to Maui. Or make due with making love without the commitment :-)
    Shout out to Brian Champagne from the comments, "Nextone...doesn't have the note separation the valve amps have."

    The valve amps have more sparkle and chime, but as mentioned cost a lot more. Did you have the presence knob turned up and the tone button engaged on the Boss Nextone? I think that would have produced a better tone on the Boss. It would have helped if you showed us the settings on the dials on the Boss. Thanks for the review.

    I think the nextons and katanas etc. will give more satisfaction to average players, than the ceap-mid priced quaky sounding tube amps. Less service cost and failures due to less heat/weigth and weaky parts. And they finally sound real good and authentic!! I do repairs on amps since 15 years...Have seen and heard a lot of fame and expensive amps.......besides the cheap ones. Tubes are not in anyway better, just more expensive. In a quality amp top shelf. But I really like the new solid-state-digitals units. Grab, go, plug in and smile!

      I think the clean sounds are more revealing than distorted sounds and there are lots of reviews with Katana and Nextone distorted sounds on ytube. The Nextone sounded pretty good for rhythm playing but the tube amps did sound fatter with single note playing particularly on the higher strings.

    Comparison would been much fairer playing through the same speaker - New speakers need "Break in -playing time" and they also differ by Sensivity - Magnet type and wattage , But neverless the Boss is a awesome sounding solid state amp !

  • @Nightwinflyer

    I love solid state and spent a few years recording almost 30 songs with them. Yet, there was always that something missing in the tone. Folks, tube technology was obsolete before the Beatles broke up. There is a reason pro players still use them, and why companies make amps with them. I went in to buy a Katana 50 because based on videos like this one it seemed to be the solid state I was dreaming of. But it just left me missing the same thing solid state always does. I plugged into a Fender Bassbreaker 15 combo and was instantly blown away by the tone and feel. The Katana series is very cheaply constructed. Perfectly fine for bedroom use but I feel like the years will tell on these amps. The Roland Cube series were much more rugged. There is a lot to like with the Boss line, but if you are really wanting tube tone you have to get those tubes to do it.

  • @robertstapleton3598
    @robertstapleton3598 3 роки тому +1

    Very interesting. I thought the Boss with 6L6s came closer to matching the Laney than the Carr. And the Boss with EL34s came closer to matching the Carr than the Laney. Although none were spot on, of course, just funny that it seemed backwards. Sounded like with tweaking the eq everything could've been closer. Of all I preferred the Laney. Just my 2 cents.

  • @blindjusticeandcommonsense2786

    It's a bit unfair not to put all three through the same speaker. Valves affect headroom and breakup/distortion. They don't do much of anything to EQ. That's what the tone stack and the speaker choice are for. And the biggest factor is always the speaker. Greenbacks don't sound the same as Vintage 30s or Jensons or no-name Chinese speakers.

    if you were miked at a gig or going direct into the P.A., no one in the audience would be able to tell the difference between a tube amp or solid state. and if they even could, half would say that the tube amp sounded better and half would say that the solid state sounded better (just general audience members/not guitar snobs, lol)...and again, that's if anyone could even tell a difference. Which they can't. I knew a guitarist who got the best tone imaginable using an old RP-1 processor directly into the P.A. and I've heard many famous guitar players with tube amps coming out of their butts!! Tube amps are great. Don't get me wrong...... But the whole issue of one sound versus another is pointless and endless. Nobody will ever win the argument. Just play what YOU think sounds good. Albert King and B.B. King, in MY opinion, had a great tone. And, guess what? they both used solid state amps for the majority of their careers. All/most of those bands in the eighties, which I thought had pretty good live tone, used solid state amps. Again, there is no definitive best or worse. Billy Gibbons used a solid state Marshall for years too!!

      @Pat - You stated what I was going to already (about general audiences vs guitar snobs) so the only thing I can do is agree. So, the strange thing about any of this is why do people continue to waste time making these comparisons over and over again? The biggest skeptics of our OWN sound is ..........ourselves! Who does it matter to the most? Us and our contemporaries! Buy what you want and/or can afford, make the most of it, enjoy and make music!
