    I also love how you show your progress including “mistakes” - your discovery process is fun to watch.

    Thanks for your videos, they are so interesting and motivating; well thought out, executed, and edited. Simple without all the loud and time-wasting scenes.

    I used to shoot only 4x5 for years back in the film days. Being able to shift made the difference, there was often a big DOF problem, as far as showing ad products. This method is interesting, but I don't know how realistic it is compared to the 4x5, but it doesn't matter. What matters is if you like the results of doing it this way. It gave me a few ideas of trying something new and that's important to me, I'm a bit bored after 49 years and now I want to try something like this but using multiple exposures on the same frame.
    What the 4x5 did was give you a feeling of depth, but not by using the DOF but from the look the 4x5 gives. It draws you in.

    When you showed the overlapping photos of the tree (7:01), in order to discuss the "problem" experienced with the lens hood, the resulting imagen reminded me of David Hockney´s photo collages.

    awesome! perfect way of showing content and without the horrible 'lounge' songs people usually add to the background in tutorial videos.

    You could also use a 150mm, 300mm lens to get a razor thin DOF and then back away until everything is in the shot. Sorta harder depending but more accurate to getting the large format look

      Sounds fun. I should try that. Maybe even on 600mm haha

      DOF becomes less shallow the bigger distance to focus point. I can perfectly have everything in focus on 400mm in a landscape shot. So you will loose the effect.

    Damn, that's pretty darn clever. Never thought to use shallow depth of field along with a panorama.

    I'm guessing David used bellow movements in at least some of those shots. I'm just saying this because those are examples of what canNOT be emulated using the bokeh-panorama hack. Unless, of course, if you were to combine that method with a tilt-shift lens or adapter such as Kipon's :P
    Btw I absolutely love the waist-level viewfinder on the modified Graflex!
    And also, pro-tip: consider using a nodal rail at least, or better yet a multi-row pano head! you'll thank me next time ;-)

    I imagine a slider mount on the tripod (typically used for video transitions) would help by keeping the sensor on the same plane and avoid misalignment of details in the shot, like the tiny branches in your tree photo..

    I think it's its own thing, you can make pictures that a 5x4 camera cannot. At least one of the LF photographs you showed used tilt, quite a different thing. I can do that with my TS-E lenses, but I can only tilt in one direction at once. Technical camera can tilt horizontally and vertically at the same time. Field cameras and press cameras have less scope for movements.
    You can do those hand-held.

    The large format effect as you describe it, comes from a curved focus plane, spherical aberration, use of camera movements, vignetting, and film halation. A true Breznier effect needs a rectilinear, flat plane illuminate, ultra-wide aperture, vignette free lens. Nikon makes one, about £8000. Or you can go the other way with something cheaper from 7artisans, and accept all the glitches as attributes. No easy answer here.

    • @PhilTaylorPhotog
      @PhilTaylorPhotog 3 роки тому

      Absolutely. It firstly needs to be shot within one image circle, not a series of moving image circles. The beauty of large format to a large extent is not just the depth of field / focal length combinations but also the vignetting, bokeh, and especially rear standard movements which cannot be achieved on other cameras. The reason the method didn't work is, it doesn't work.

    For full frame
    Only 6 images is needed to get the medium format size i think
    What about aps c ?
    Do i need to shoot 9 photos to get the medium format size ?

    • @ImitativePhotography
      @ImitativePhotography  Рік тому +1

      Based on the size comparison diagram 9 sounds about right for APS C to medium format.

    I’m confused. Since when did lens hoods introduce vignetting?

    • @ImitativePhotography
      @ImitativePhotography  Рік тому

      I didn't get the issue on the other images when I took off the lens hood, so back when I made the video I thought it was mechanical vignetting but I think I might have been confused.

    If older cameras had a higher quality and larger depth of field, what was responsible for their grainier/fuzzier appearance?

    • @ImitativePhotography
      @ImitativePhotography  3 роки тому +6

      The grain comes from the film stock used. Some are grainier than others. All things being equal, grain is more noticeable on smaller film formats like 35 mm which are more popular.

      There is not a digital camera in creation that can rival 8x10 film or collodion plates

  • @weisserth

    Cheap knockoff. ;)
    Two things that bother me with this, well three actually:
    1. The large format look is not about a shallow depth of field at a wide viewing angle. It's about the opposite: insane amounts of detail with a deep DoF; color and gradation transitions that can only be achieved on a sensor plane large enough to accommodate for that.
    2. The method of moving the camera on the tripod head, essentially changing the perspective in between each shot by moving the sensor plane is flawing the results.
    3. This method has no response to lens movements - unless a tilt-shift lens is used. A tilt-shift lens would also be the answer to #2 as that solves the sensor plane movement issue.
    I think to try this method, a tilt shift lens mount adapter allowing the adaption of a long, fast lens with a large image circle to a small format such as Micro Four Thirds might be a compromise.
