Honestly ever since Bowser Jr made it to the game, the Koopalings never felt like a bad choice for Mario Kart. I think the problem more stems from the fact they were added before Jr. and had he been in day one, I don’t think the Koopalings would’ve gotten as much hate
Okay for some reason, when i had initially clicked on this timestamp, it had sent me to the transition of Mario walking, after Odyssey had said "Let's jump right in." I thought this was an elaborate joke. In all honesty, I find myself never braking, either.
I love Neo Bowser City because I loved ascetic and it's very skill based, I find it very fun to race on, not to mention it has one of the best songs IMO
I get the point that having weird spinoff characters and excessive third parties would just be too odd for a Mario Kart roster, but 5 babies, pink gold peach and peachette are pretty bad picks. Cut the babies count in half, remove the two lame "peach but not peach" variants, and put in something based instead... like Buzzy Beetles they'd be an epic driver
They should have added Bowsers Castle DS in the booster course. Also all the power up characters like Cat peach should have been alternate skins and then those spots could have been used for unique characters like Dixie Kong.
I wish mario kart did focus more on the side games, as they're just as much a part of the mario series and I feel like this would be a good and easy way to include them
I wish booster course pas 2 should happen to other 48 tracks and 12 cups called those Sun shine spirit cup, elephant cup , bubble cup , boo cup , heart cup , green star cup , coin cup , blooper cup , wonder flower cup, Bob bomb cup , bullet bill cup , super horn cup
I believe it's due to Nintendo catering to a casual audience rather than the hardcore Mario fanbase. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is by far the best-selling Mario game, and most people playing the game are much more likely to know characters like Kamek, Birdo, or Link than the likes of Geno, Starlow, Dimentio, and Edge.
@@cobaltordinaire5219 Paper Mario references Mario Kart 64, not the other way around. There are Paper Mario references in Mario Kart: Super Circuit, though (obviously because it was developed by Intelligent Systems).
I really like the explanation you gave for disagreeing with my hot take and you bring up some really good points! It is fun seing a bunch of yoshis loose to peachette lmao 8:47
Here’s one. I want the next Mario kart to have NO RETROS! Both the booster course pack and tour are so retro heavy that I just wanna break from them for just one game. I want a new Mario kart game with nothing but new courses.
10:03 What he’s saying here is that Base 8 got paid DLC on the WiiU. But then it was ported to the Switch as Deluxe less than 4 years after the original release. And Deluxe included the paid DLC in the purchase for no extra cost, which really made the people who bought WiiU 8 and paid for its DLC feel quite screwed over. I think that’s the gist of it.
10:45 I rememeber that the AI would often get stuck into literaly looping in circles in a smaller part of both said stages. I do not like the battle mode from Wii U, it also had the mixup of that you would stay dead after being defeated but could drive around as a ghost and still take others out. But not getting points for it.
13:36 actually it’s the opposite, i fricking despise Amsterdam Drift with a burning passion and i’m triumphantly happy that you called the City tracks bad lol
Honestly, I just like the city courses because I have been to several of them (Los Angeles, New York, Rome, London, Paris, and Singapore), so instead of thinking about the layout, I think "I'm recognize everything I'm driving through."
Honestly I feel like the main reasons why so many people dislike/"hate" many of the city tracks is because of their shared themes with each other, the vast quantity of them, and simple straightaway portions. I can understand these reasonings - due to them being based on real-life places, it's hard to come up with satisfying maps/layouts, especially with the multi-route gimmick that they have, and I do agree that Tokyo Blur and London Loop aren't great city tracks exactly because they're so mundane by comparison to Athens Dash. However, I found most of them do plenty to keep themselves unique from one another not only visually speaking, but gameplay-wise as well (Amsterdam has the canals, windmill field, and garden; Paris has the multiple pathways, Sydney has the bridge with the ramps and the twisty park section, Vancouver has the ice skating rink and forest/bridge section, etc.). Also, seeing as other Tour tracks were brought in, this is a good way of archiving many of the new courses that Mario Kart Tour brought to the series (barring the RMX tracks which are based on SNES and GBA tracks). If you think the city tracks are weak compared to some other ones, that's fine, but for me, I think judging the tracks for what they are *individually* is the most important thing to me personally. And besides, it's not like Mario Kart is a stranger to tracks that are very similar to each other - the circuit tracks, for example, which also have simple/basic straightaway sections - so I'm not sure why almost all the cities have it much worse but some circuits can get away with it.
A hot take I have is that sky high Sunday is WAY too over hated. I think the layout is fun to traverse through and the aesthetic of a bunch of frozen treats in the sky is one I like.
On the "mario kart characters having the same stats" debate: I don't really care that much either way. I'm not that into 8 Deluxe's competitive scene and I wouldn't really notice that much if a character would significantly preform better than another one. --also if you wanted to play a certain character you like competitively then maybe start playing better with that character lmao--
WHY DOES NOBODY LIKE NEO BOWSER CITY?! First Schaffrillas, now you? Like I get the layout, but the aesthetic? It's top tier in terms of aesthetic! The music is amazing too! I don't get it. Edit: I think I started something
My take is that the next Mario Kart should be only new tracks. I think we've had enough retros shoved down our throats with Tour and the BCP for a while.
I think you’re missing another reason why people hate cheese land. And also underrating how big those cuts are at the end. Seriously, there’s no point in running, bagging is way too good, two mushrooms take you from 9th to 1st Anyways, the biggest reason I dislike cheese land is the combination of low traction (the reason you don’t like Neo Bowser) and cheese holes. Makes the track really annoying to drive on
Don’t know if it’s a hot take but I didn’t mind the changes to Toad’s Turnpike (my fave N64 course). While it’s not as cramped and had the antigravity walls, I still think it’s a fun course
I think the special juice of your videos is the sound effects, short meme clips, and your phenomenal timing to use them. Also, I love listening you yap on and on for hours. Thanks.
@BlueMarioGaming Captain Falcon definitely deserves to be a Mario Kart character. He's from a racing franchise, unlike the other crossover characters, and has two tracks and an entire kart combination on top of that. I genuinely don't understand how he didn't make it in.
@@TicTacToeCraft can't say i'm really the biggest fan of the guest characters from other franchises, even if captain falcon IS racing adjacent, but to each their own i guess.
For the next mario kart game I want a "chaos mode" that adds a ton of extra items for the lols and has an additional item slot. Things like 5 bananas, a giant green shell, the thundercloud everyone hates, triple Bo-bombs. Stuff like that. I also want future courses to add shortcuts you can only take while small. That would be cool.
I agree that the Koopalings were a great addition to the game. I always gravitate towards them whenever playing this game. Here is something I would have loved to be added to VS race: I always wished there was an option where you could choose which characters and kart combinations your opponents had, like you can do so in Super Smash Bros. I also would have loved for you to be able to race in more than just two teams. Like what about a race with four teams of three like in Team Sonic Racing? That was a good concept. Another cool thing to add would have been being able to choose how many opponents you would have in a given race. This could open up heaps of great racing combinations, like a race with just Koopalings, or a race with just Non-Mario characters, or using the Mii Feature to get a race with just the characters from your favorite show/game? All those extra options would have added a lot more flavour to the game. Obviously I'm not being a hater, I think the game is great, but those are things I would have loved to see added.
Honestly the ''deleting character stats'' is a take I 100% agree with. What if your playstyle and favourite character clash? Sure, your kart choice can midigate that, but it's still nice to have whatever character you want with your preferred stats. Heck, there's an SRB2 Kart mod that lets you customize your character's stats and it is a lifesaver. Also I kinda like Peachette too. I just think she's adorable.
Personally, I agree with that, tho given the character i play (take a wild guess), ive never had an issue with my playstyle and character choice clashing Also based
Here's a hottake The BCP city tracks should've focussed on ONE main area rather than the general vibe of the city. cities like Athens, Sydney and New York are enormous and span a huge area. Paris was sort of based around the streets surrounding the eiffel tower which I liked. however other xity tracks were focussed around the city as a whole Sydney for instance travels to The opera House, Barangaroo Reserve, Luna Park, Port Dawson, Port Jackson (That's five locations which are spaced out)
One hot take that I have is I would prefer not having all the characters at launch (apart from DLC) like imagine starting the game with like 12-16 characters and you have to do unlock characters by getting enough coins OR bring back the DS challenge mode and unlock characters that way!
Almost like every Mario Kart game before this, including the original Mario Kart 8... I totally agree with you tho I like having more stuff to work towards. Also the fact that you automatically unlock mirror mode and 200cc off the bat feels weird
@@jessicacallaghan8082 yeah because after you unlock gold Mario and all the cars and stuff which is feels like forever but if you spam for like a day it’ll be done easy, but if you had the challenge/ unlock characters you actually have a lot to do which is much better in my personal opinion
I do feel like Deluxe having all its characters from the start stemmed from the idea that a lot of buyers already got base 8. Though yeah, wish it was like Smash U (Smash 3ds had more unlockable characters for context than Smash U) and had all the new characters being unlockable. Maybe the base 8 DLC characters and cups too, but idk fully.
I’m a very big Madrid Drive defender as an American who has been living here for the past year. Recognizing every landmark is so cool, and I think the track is compact enough to not be annoying. It kind of feels more like a normal Mario Kart track that evolves over time instead of the sprawling mess of other city tracks
The overall issue with Cheese Land is online, that track is SUPER broken and really makes people bag for last places items to literally go from last place to first, not only using the shortcut you mentioned but also having what people calls "a bullet extension" giving an unfair advantage to people that seeks for the Bullet Bill on last place It's overall a very nice track but the gameplay on online really ruins it…
Holy crap sir musty! I love his stuff! Also you should really play donkey Kong country, especially since you clearly like difficulty, I feel like you’d love them. Heck I think they’re better than every nsmb game (except ds for me)
I personally felt happy with Peachette's inclusion in BCP Wave 6, I love how her trick animations are based of her double jump from NSMBUDX and her voice overall is adorable, I have always mained her since Wave 6 dropped, much better clone then Pink Gold Peach anyways

@@vanessasandoval96 Where do I even begin with this? Okay, first of all, we are not getting new Tour tracks. Tour is not getting new tracks since this year, and the seasons cycle through old and existing ones. And if we are not getting new Tour tracks, we are not getting new city tracks either. Now to your picks: Seoul would be too similar to Tokyo if it were taking place during the day. It would need something to stand out, like rain or something. There is no way we are going to see a real Chinese city in a Nintendo game, and we do not need more American cities anymore. Three (if you count Vancouver) are plenty. I do think that Rio is a good pick, though, and a huge missed opportunity on Nintendo's part, considering Mario visited Rio already in M&S 2016. And you only listed a few of the 48 tracks. I hope you realize most of them would be boring SNES tracks because Nintendo already picked most of the heavy-hitters for the BCP. For the characters: Arguably good choices, but three "Bros" are redundant. My advice: Please do not get your hopes up for something like this and just wait for a new Mario Kart, which will definitely include some of the tracks and characters you listed here.
It's not that it's not fun it's that it's boring. They could have done a lot better with the theme of a Neo City and even if we ignore that and focus on the remake they could make it a least a tiny bit more interesting.
I quite like Bone Dry Dunes… the music is good and I like the aesthetic a lot, and the track layout isn’t bad either. That track and Twisted Mansion get a lot of undeserved hate imo, like yeah idk if they’re in my top ten but they’re certainly not the worst tracks in the base game
For cheese land, one of the key reasons people dislike the track is that because of the starting bullet bill extension, the course boils down to a bullet bill farming simulator where nobody wants to drive forward. If at least one person chooses to drive normally, everyone in the back get boosted items odds due to distance based items
At least Dry Dry Desert is just a bad track and nothing else. Water Park is supposed to be a tutorial for how underwater driving is different from normal driving and barely shows it. Mario Kart Stadium successfully manages to tutorialise almost everything the game has to offer while Water Park fails in teaching you a single mechanic.
i HATE water park it is by far the worst track that has ever come out of the series by disappointment because MK7 ALREADY DID WATER and there really wasn't a need to do ANOTHER track introducing water mechanics, but so be it and they not only didn't succeed in showcasing any water mechanics (a single spin booster), half the stage is either out of the water or a huge turn, and it's the SECOND track in the game no unique mechanics, no unique aesthetics, no NOTHING. it's truly a disaster.
@@bcsbernard How can someone be so overly dramatic about Water Park? It isn't DS Figure 8 Circuit (you know, first track in the game, "no unique mechanics, no unique aesthetic, no NOTHING"). Compared to Figure 8 Circuit, Water Park honestly is a masterpiece in track design, because IT HAS unique mechanics (moving spin boosters, ferris wheel to avoid in glider section), IT HAS a unique aesthetic (French architecture, the ferris wheel, also, name one track that looks similar) and unlike Figure 8, it has changing ground textures, unique music, a shortcut through a merry-go-around and a musical easter egg in said merry-go-around that references Super Mario 64. Mario Kart 7 introduced water mechanics? So what? There are many people who played Mario Kart 8/Deluxe but never MK7 and just because a game introduces a new mechanic to the series, doesn't mean the following games can't design tracks around those. Otherwise, you could apply that logic to Excitebike Stadium taking advantage of the trick mechanic from MKWii or Dragon Driftway taking advantage of the drift mechanic from Super Mario Kart. (I never thought I'd defend Water Park, but I felt like it was the right thing when you called it "the worst track in the entire series".)
@@TicTacToeCrafti said worst track as in the fact that it didn't deliver what it was meant to deliver. a bunch of other tracks are worse in general but the feeling water park gave me was incomparably disappointing
Tbh I've never even played a mario cart game but I could still just hours of you talking about anything cause of how good your editing is. Pure dopamine to my brain. Loved the video.
I fucking HATE SNES Rainbow Road. It might honestly be my least favorite track to race on in the whole game. Now you might be thinking, “Well, that’s just a massive skill issue.” And to that I say, yes. Yes it is.
Also about that roster take, are you telling me you would seriously prefer baby daisy, baby rosalina, and pink gold peach over characters like e gadd or Dixie Kong?
Finally someone defending the koopalings. Clowns act like they never had a important role in the mario franchise. They were bosses in two of the greatest mainline mario games ever made. Koopalings earn every right to be in every mario kart game more then half the roster.
I mean, its more so that there are 7 of them and none of them really stand out from one another besides Ludwig and Wendy. The fact that they are almost always talked about under their collective name and not as individuals doesn't make them feel like individual characters of importance, but a collective. If I had the choice to represent that Koopalings through like 3 or 4 of them and then get 3 or 4 spots for new characters who haven't been in Mario Kart I'd take it. Hell, I'd take a Goomba over 2 of them.
They have a history in Mario. They just don't need to take up a dozen slots for what's essentially "bowser jr but tall and skinny" or "bowser jr but fat and brown".
Something that I enjoy is that these last two videos and other videos like this you’ve been able to express yourself more and it’s great. Keep up the amazing work!
One annoyance I have with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is that all of the characters are already unlocked at the start. There are none to unlock in the future besides the DLC, but that's dofferent than completing a goal to open up a racer. Taking into account Nintendo's current design phase, though, it does make sense. I am glad there are unlockables in the forms of vehicle parts. (I did forget about Golden Mario, but still)
Honestly, for something that's treated as a huge deal in the marketing, I think the anti-gravity really doesn't matter all that much. I feel like you could replace pretty much any anti-gravity section with a normal section and not much would change gameplay-wise.
Hey, Here’s a 300K special idea: Ranking every Mario party mini game from worst to the best (including remakes) this can be besed on how fun they are, as well as replay value, and maybe even mentioning the changes to a remade Mario party mini game
its weird how 'i dont mind non-mario characters in mario kart' seemingly became a hot take overnight. i always had the impression that people liked them
I think people like non-mario characters in Mario Kart, but don’t want them to become a reoccurring thing or for the franchise to become “Nintendo Kart”.
You began with Neo Bowser City, hm? Heh, this is honestly one of my favorites in the entire game. From what I've looked into, people seem to have hated how bland it was in Mario Kart 7 and appreciate the HD glow-up in Mario Kart 8. Me? I've loved Neo Bowser City even in 7. The music is catchy, and I kinda dig the idea of Bowser owning a futuristic city. Music Park is another track that I love. When I saw it return in Mario Kart 8, I was pumped! There is an argument to be made about it not being all that exciting though. As for the characters...? I firmly believe that since the conclusion of the Booster Course Pass, 8 Deluxe has the best roster in Mario Kart history. I don't even mind the Koopalings being separate slot picks; they are major villains in the Mario series. I can also get behind the Nintendo guests. Although I don't support the idea of "Nintendo Kart", the crossover characters we have in 8 really don't steal anybody's spots or anything like that. Besides, Link, Inkling, and Isabelle being in the best-selling Mario game is kinda neat. I imagine the RPG stans might take what you say out of context and start tearing you apart on Twitter. Mario roster discourse _totally_ isn't something that's brought up every other week or anything... Jokes aside, this was a a solid video, Odyssey.

9:38 to be fair, the guy did say that the graphical quality is lower. He didn't say that it looked better, he just said that he preferred the more cartoony look, and I'm gonna be honest, I agree. Why some tracks (Toad Circuit) do look bad in my opinion, I don't think a mario kart game should look realistic. It is a bit strange seeing the mario cast race in a realistic looking forest or something, isn't it?
The thing is, the base MK8 art style isn't hyper-realistic. It's more semi-realistic, with a considerable amount of saturation to make it feel "Mario". Not to mention how the lighting, details on the tracks and even some of the animations are miles ahead of those of the BCP. So it's not just the textures that received a downgrade.

I believe it's due to Nintendo catering to a casual audience rather than the hardcore Mario fanbase. Fun Fact: Odyssey Central and Nick Digiovanni dropped a video at the same time
I thought Odyssey is going to do a ranking of Mario Kart 8 deluxe such as the 96 tracks
@@vanessasandoval96 he already did a ranking of all the tracks
Amsterdam Drift is a decent city track. Only thing I don't like is the music, it sounds a bit iffy.
4:26 plays a race ands sees the whole lobby bagging on cheese land
Wait.... You've got to play Donkey Kong Country! I need your analysis of my favorite game series!
Honestly, I just like the city courses because I have been to several of them (Los Angeles, New York, Rome, London, Paris, and Singapore), so instead of thinking about the layout, I think "I'm recognize everything I'm driving through."
Exactly! I’m Dutch so recognising all the places in Amsterdam Drift is really fun :D

Seriously, there’s no point in running, bagging is way too good, two mushrooms take you from 9th to 1st
Anyways, the biggest reason I dislike cheese land is the combination of low traction (the reason you don’t like Neo Bowser) and cheese holes. Makes the track really annoying to drive on

Its definately better than the actual roster. You can easily make the koopalings alts of BJ so they dont take up more slots.
to be fair they were kinda cooking with E. Gadd, Toadsworth, and Dr. Mario being on the roster. (everyone else can go, though)
@BlueMarioGaming Captain Falcon definitely deserves to be a Mario Kart character. He's from a racing franchise, unlike the other crossover characters, and has two tracks and an entire kart combination on top of that. I genuinely don't understand how he didn't make it in.
Banjo-Kazooie and especially Sonic are such left-field picks. Also, why Vivian instead of Paper Mario?
@@TicTacToeCraft can't say i'm really the biggest fan of the guest characters from other franchises, even if captain falcon IS racing adjacent, but to each their own i guess.
For the next mario kart game I want a "chaos mode" that adds a ton of extra items for the lols and has an additional item slot. Things like 5 bananas, a giant green shell, the thundercloud everyone hates, triple Bo-bombs. Stuff like that. I also want future courses to add shortcuts you can only take while small. That would be cool.
I don’t mind the characters from other franchises, but honestly, Captain Falcon should be playable. (And the mii costume doesn’t count.)
I agree that the Koopalings were a great addition to the game. I always gravitate towards them whenever playing this game.
Here is something I would have loved to be added to VS race:
I always wished there was an option where you could choose which characters and kart combinations your opponents had, like you can do so in Super Smash Bros.
Personally, I agree with that, tho given the character i play (take a wild guess), ive never had an issue with my playstyle and character choice clashing
Also based
It’s like Pokémon, you can like a thing without it being viable
Idea for 300k special: rank every mariokart track! nitros, retros the whole thing, bar spinoffs (tour home circuit etc.) i would definitely watch
So it’s safe to say that Odyssey has never played 7… at least Piranha Plant Slide is still awesome
Here's a hottake
The BCP city tracks should've focussed on ONE main area rather than the general vibe of the city.
cities like Athens, Sydney and New York are enormous and span a huge area. Paris was sort of based around the streets surrounding the eiffel tower which I liked. however other xity tracks were focussed around the city as a whole
Sydney for instance travels to The opera House, Barangaroo Reserve, Luna Park, Port Dawson, Port Jackson (That's five locations which are spaced out)
One hot take that I have is I would prefer not having all the characters at launch (apart from DLC) like imagine starting the game with like 12-16 characters and you have to do unlock characters by getting enough coins OR bring back the DS challenge mode and unlock characters that way!
I see where your coming from but for a multilayer game on console like mk 8, I feel like more people would rather play whoever they want
I love all the little cuts to clips inbetween and stuff you’ve been adding to videos lately, they add some humour to the flaming hot monologue takes
I’m a very big Madrid Drive defender as an American who has been living here for the past year. Recognizing every landmark is so cool, and I think the track is compact enough to not be annoying. It kind of feels more like a normal Mario Kart track that evolves over time instead of the sprawling mess of other city tracks
My hot take : I don't hate the metallic characters (Metal Mario is my main) ! I really like, the colors, the reflect and the textures they had.
The overall issue with Cheese Land is online, that track is SUPER broken and really makes people bag for last places items to literally go from last place to first, not only using the shortcut you mentioned but also having what people calls "a bullet extension" giving an unfair advantage to people that seeks for the Bullet Bill on last place
It's overall a very nice track but the gameplay on online really ruins it…

Odyssey: Neo Bowser city is the worst base game track
Water Park and Dry Dry Desert: allow us to introduce ourselves
At least Dry Dry Desert is just a bad track and nothing else. Water Park is supposed to be a tutorial for how underwater driving is different from normal driving and barely shows it. Mario Kart Stadium successfully manages to tutorialise almost everything the game has to offer while Water Park fails in teaching you a single mechanic.
"Excite"bike Stadium and Toad's Turdpike: Hello There!
i HATE water park it is by far the worst track that has ever come out of the series by disappointment because MK7 ALREADY DID WATER and there really wasn't a need to do ANOTHER track introducing water mechanics, but so be it
and they not only didn't succeed in showcasing any water mechanics (a single spin booster), half the stage is either out of the water or a huge turn, and it's the SECOND track in the game
no unique mechanics, no unique aesthetics, no NOTHING. it's truly a disaster.

My hot take is that batman... SHOULDN'T BE IN THE GAME MWAHAHAHA
He’s way too unbalanced, I agree.
