Give me an old school Mercedes any day. Yes, the new ones are nice and sleek and have lots of toys, but nothing beats the feel, ride, touch and smell of an old Mercedes.

that 280SE is absolutely stunning omg. I usually dont like restomods, especially the really awful and tacky ones you see at sema, but i have to make an exception for this, its stunning, brilliant.

At 5 minutes 30 seconds into the video the tester is shown opening and closing the door of the 280SE. You shouldn't need to "slam" the doors on this car like that. These doors will solidly shut with much less effort.

Tha 280SE just makes the CL look so tacky, so plasticky, so overly agressive, so grotesce, so ugly.

that´s it. The 280 SE 3.5 atomizes it completely. One piece of wood from the 280SE has more dignity, more pride than the complete other car. They were simply uncomparable.

I'll take the old car. I love that classic Mercedes styling and the simplicity of a classic car. The interior is amazing in terms of quality and the materials used. I don't think Mercedes used pot metal for window cranks or anything, it looks like real steel with a healthy coat of chrome and the wood accents are just beautiful. In the old car you wouldn't feel like you're sitting in a cocoon of plastic. Top quality plastic is still plastic. Of course, my driving style would also lend itself nicely to a classic car since I don't drag race and would hardly ever use the capabilities of the modern 560 hp engine. For me it's the classic, hands down. No disrespect to the modern car, it's beautiful too.

I'm proudly analog in a digital world. There is something delightfully primitive about driving an old Mercedes Benz. They just work so well and there's nothing flashy about them. These cars just go about their business in understated style and an old school type of luxury. Look at a 10-15 year old CL500 - those cars cost nearly $100k and are now considered too costly to even bother to repair. Old school just keeps on going and appreciating in value.

who in the right mind will choose that cl63 over a 280SE with 300hp? That SE will never look out of place ever.

When my dad use to drive, he drove his 1970s Benz, and loved it. I totally forgot about my memories of playing in the front seat with all the knobs, and just enjoying the little details of craftsmanship that I didn't really understand at the time. Everything was so mechanical in those cars; from the folding armrest in the backseat to how the sunroof opened. Now that I look back, I realize it was my favorite toy.
Thank you for this video. It gave me something I would have forgotten and lost.

The newer ones maybe be technically better, but the older ones were simpler with less to go wrong. That's why they're still out there running with original engines. And the old models had a pure calm elegance about them that the new ones just can't seem to recreate. This is not only true for Mercedes but also BMW, Audi, all the car makers really. Personally I love the 70s American designs a lot but there's some real eye catchers at every generation from the Germans like the W126-Coupe or the W129. BMW had their E24 and E38.

the 1971 looks like ART! nothing this days regarding design can get even close to it. not even a modern Bugatti.
the artistic design of cars lasted till the 70's and then ended. the digital era of the 80's and beyond ruined it all.

I would take that '71 280SE any day of the week and twice on Sunday. That is when Mercedes could BUILD a car! That thing was designed to LAST FOREVER! The new one, not so much. Modern cars -- all modern cars by all manufacturers -- are designed to last 8 to 10 years, tops. You're not going to see any modern cars still on the road when they're over 40 years old. It's just not gonna happen.

I could cry to see an engine like this in a classic car, especially in a Mercedes Benz, its just not right.
A car like this isn't about power, about speed, about handing, its about the nostalgitc aspect of these old cars, you own them to own a piece of history, something that has a story to tell, to feel ... they shoud be kept as original as possible, not with torn out and replaced heart under the hood and a lowered suspension.
    I love my dad's '71 280S, its original.

  • @DieselBenz

Definitely go with the OLD car! Overall build quality in a car will NEVER be like it was of that era. Having a modern powertrain in a bullet-proof chassis is the best of both worlds!!

Insanely lucky Californian who, as a teen, got to drive a 3.5 in the mid '70s after I got my license. Read the 3.5's were the last of the old-school, hand-built, Mercedes & first with a V8 engine. Cars were $12k new & $500 extra for the convertibles... If had approaching $500k for a car, would buy one in a heartbeat. These were extremely elegant high-speed tourers of a quality that doesn't exist anymore.

I can see the value of modern technology in the new Benz, but nothing can tear me away from the classic lines and true simple elegance of the '71. The new motor and all else is spectacular, but there is something to be said for the sheer true elegance and style of the 3.5. Given my choice, in purest form of each, I'll take the '71 all day long.

No matter, where you go and who you meet....this car is a "conversation piece", that any car enthusiast likes to enjoy, even just by looking at it...and the classy design with "Megathron" technology (354 HP) makes it the perfect "Benz"....best "Mercedes-Benz" of all time....by the way, perfect exterior color and perfectly matched with the interior color...Yes, this car is very expensive ($ 400,000 US),but it's not about the cost, it's style...class...and staying humble and feeling fortunate, to be able to drive and possibly own this beautiful piece of elegance...

I LOVED the shots of the interior of the old Merc, showing off the details. And, maybe I'm in the minority, but I love how the presenter didn't talk like a robot. He made a couple "mistakes" but it only made him and the performance seem comfortably human rather than an ultra-rehearsed, infinitely-taked computer program.

I remember working for an Oldsmobile/Mercedes-Benz dealer back in '89 and driving a Ciera and a 300E back to back. It was hard to picture two mid-sized 6 cylinder powered sedans being any more different than those two. The Benz was 3 times the price of the Olds but you could tell where the money went.

When this test was conducted you could still buy a 280se coupe for around $15,000 - and a convertible $40k. Five years later prices have left the solar system. $75-$100k is common for the coupes; $250 to $500k for the convertibles...almost without warning. You can see prices for great condition 80's and early 90's Benz cars starting to move up now too - a great time to jump into the market as they will never be worth less than they are today.

There is no way the new one can compare to the beauty of the old one. The interior of the old one and the exterior does something to you . I am a Lexus fanatic but this old Mercedes is the most beautiful machine I have ever seen

I have a 280 SE 4 door, it's lovely but the interior in the coupe's / convertibles are magical. Also a 600 Grosser or Pullman? The 600 has to be on my list of favourite mercs.

As an owner of a 72 280se I have to say there is no better feeling than driving it around town and turning heads.

I'd probably take the new, just to know what it feels like. I prefer the old style though. Having owned an '85 300SD, I loved that car and it was the most rock-solid car I've ever owned.
