Camelot, the developer of Mario Golf, had some previous experience in golf game design- in April 1998, they released Hot Shots Golf, described by an IGN reviewer as "fun golf game that you'll keep playing despite yourself," for the PlayStation 1.
The RPG elements of this game and Mario Tennis are what made them enjoyable for me. You get a sense of progression, talking to all the characters after a victory, and feel like you're a in a little world of your own instead of a bunch of menus. Here's hoping they revive this series for the 3DS. Honestly, the 3D features would probably work well with golf, at least to an extent.
great gameboy color game i bought this loose cart today at a boot sale for 2 pound the gameplay addictive the graphics awesome the music ok the sound great overall i give this 8 out of 10
Love this game! I played a ton of Mario Golf and Mario Tennis. I think the developer's name was Camelot...They made superior RPG/Sports crossovers! Haven't played many games like them since.
I would like to see a new Mario Golf game eventually. Nintendo, or more specfically Camelot or Next level Games or whoever chooses to develop, should give it another crack. I am surprised they didn't make or thought of one for the Wii or the 3DS yet. Maybe Wii U, but some announcement would be nice. Mario Golf is very fun. Some really bizarre holes can be designed.
Oh man, I played the shit out of this game! It was my go-to game for trips to the grocery store, before I found Pokemon. Now I know how kids who grew up in the 80's feel when they find a game they used to play.
I got the game back when it was released. I could beat roughly half of it until it became way too difficult for me. Maybe I should give it another try, I still have the cartridge. I also remember the great music.
Your last golf outing was like the scene in Navy Seals? Did they tow your El Camino, requiring you to bicycle after it and steal it off the tow truck? ;)
It depends on how you play Virtual Console games. I mainly play all Virtual Console games on my 3DS: NES, Game Gear, Game Boy, everything. If you are like some Nintendo fans, then you might like to get the "Portable" VC Games on the 3DS, and "Console" VC Games on the Wii U. If that's the case, go get it. However, if you are like me. I would wait for the N64 Mario Golf on the 3DS VC, since it is 64-bit and has a better review. But if you have a million coins, then you could spend it if you like.
I love this game! I own all 4 Mario Golf games, beat them all & I really wish they would make another. Mario Golf Advance Tour is my favorite, but they're all great!
I'm mad at myself for spending 200 coins on Donkey Kong Jr. for Wii U now since this game is 200 coins this month. I have only 400 coins left over now. I can either choose this game and a Super Mario Bros. 2 or Excitebike or Vegas Stakes and Baseball. I really wish I could have this game plus Baseball and Vegas Stakes. I no longer own SMB 2 on the NES, GBA, and SNES, but I own it on the Wii. I no longer own Excitebike for the NES and e-Reader, but I do own it in Animal Crossing and the remakes on Wii and 3DS so I'm learning towards getting Baseball and Vegas Stakes, but I could buy Vegas Stakes for $2.88 on eBay and I used to own Baseball which is a very cheap title.
With 500 coins, I'm sure that you'd have a lot to spare, so it won't be that painful if you find something else that you'd like in the future. Also, with so many games coming up for the 3DS and Wii U, I'm sure that all of us would get a million coins by the end of the next Club Nintendo Year (June 2014).
@TheBananaPhone1 more like an "On Rail Shooter" to me =/ I don't know something like that minigame back on Banjoo-Tooie where everyone is getting a gun... bird... gunbird, while shooting eggs to the other players. For Mario I guess it could be something like paint and different guns... dunno, just saying
real men play all video game consuls at once and successfully, lmao. but one question, you might have answered before, but how do you get a picture of just what your doing on your portable device? in this case, your Gameboy SP???
This game has a surprisingly good soundtrack and deep overworld.
Ahh, great times. Importing characters to the 64 from this game always made your character overpowered...and I loved it. :)
This IS my childhood game, more than any zelda or anything. I thank my dad for buying it to me (used) before a road trip.

this guy always teaches me something in every video i watch of him :)
I played this game a lot when I was a kid. I beat it like 4 times. Good fun.
I love your gameboy reviews. Reminds me of my childhood =)
Now there actually is Mario Steeple Chase in that 3ds sports game.
mario golf advance tour on the gameboy advance was unbelievable
fantastic review. the courses in this game are very well made just like in the mario kart series
Mark, hearing your voice always cheers me up from a bad day for some reason, thanks!! :D
It is not a typo, "nice on" is a term used in golf to complement someone when they get on the green in a small number of strokes.

available now on nintendo 3ds virtual console! let the word out! it's a available now!
My childhood right here
I got this when I was 8. Surprisingly enough, I love this game, despite the fact that I'm not into golf at all.
Man, I still have this game. I always played it and never actually beat it.
Heheh, the angry little Blooper! 5:04
no, by "nice on" it means that you made a good approach at the hole, as it's almost near it
I keep hearing about this new handheld, the PS Vectrex, I need to grab one of those.
I used to play so much Mario Golf on N64 not to mention Hot Shots on psx...
Heh, I sold this game on ebay a few months ago. Had lots of fun with it on the GBC in its day.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force game is a good golf game :)
@Afr0cat Yeah. I'd actually like to see that. Im on the fence whether to buy one or not.
at 4:35 i was expecting "a wild golf course has appeared! Command?"
great gameboy color game i bought this loose cart today at a boot sale for 2 pound the gameplay addictive the graphics awesome the music ok the sound great overall i give this 8 out of 10
Both Mario Golf and Mario Tennis play excellent on the 3ds. Original are great to own, but the games hold up well enough to download.

I was literally about to say that renegade5fury! I guess you beat me to the punch there. You can't have Mario Golf without Mario Tennis!
Oh man, I played the shit out of this game! It was my go-to game for trips to the grocery store, before I found Pokemon. Now I know how kids who grew up in the 80's feel when they find a game they used to play.
No, it meant "on" as in on the green.
LOL..a navy seals reference. I bet the kids don't get that one. Michael Biehn kicks ass.
I am too, dude. It seems to be the only decent choice.
this games sure is awesome. i love mario tennis for the gameboy color u should review that
This easily my favourite metroid game.
My sister played this a lot yeaaars ago and I should play it eventually too.
i feel like I should go buy this game now
I prefer Mario Tennis for the GBC or GBA tbh. Both great sporting games :)
I got the game back when it was released. I could beat roughly half of it until it became way too difficult for me. Maybe I should give it another try, I still have the cartridge.
I also remember the great music.
Your last golf outing was like the scene in Navy Seals? Did they tow your El Camino, requiring you to bicycle after it and steal it off the tow truck? ;)
@n64pwn3r it doesn't have a backlit screen and is harder to record

"The Boys are back in town!!!"
Oh hey, I used to have this game :D
hell yeah it was rofl
I did like the mario golf for GBA that one was pretty awesome
I recommend Golf: tee it up, on xbox arcade. Just don't get the desert course. Horribly broken.
hot shots and mario golf are pretyu much the same kind of game.. fun and cartoony.
Miss ur channel bro deff helped with random pickups at places by looking at ur reviews
its like the original 1989 version for the gameboy
I love this game! I own all 4 Mario Golf games, beat them all & I really wish they would make another. Mario Golf Advance Tour is my favorite, but they're all great!
had mario golf for my n64, thought it was pretty bad, probably because I don't like golf :P. Mario tennis however was/is an amazing game
Why didn't they put Mario Golf on the Wii with motion controls is beyond me.
My god this brings me back. lol I remember saving up my allowance for so many months to get a gameboy.
advance sp! :D my personal favourite handheld!
i used to play mario games but then i got an xbox!
*Shows GBC Game into GBA SP, uses Gamecubes GBA player for video* RESPECT!

Announced for the 3DS Virtual Console!
5:08 Luigi kicking ass!
You and your ninja golf... :P
5$?? Man in my town all the pawn shops charge around 25$ for good game boy color games....
i had the original one it was awesome
Ninja Golf is still the best golf game.

@Huumu1000 ooohhhh, I should probably add that to my cart, thanks ^_^
Should I get this from club Nintendo or save my coins for something else. Right now I only have 150.
@renegade5fury Agreed!
ohhhhhhhh my game the best sports game ever
@konataGAMERZ THERE IS! and it's probably the BEST mario tennis game available and it's not expensive to get, either ^^
@renegade5fury Mario Tennis on GBC is the best tennis game in my opinion.
Am I odd for liking this game more than hot shots golf on the psp?
Also, from now until the end of the month, you could get it for free for 150 Club Nintendo Coins!
Is there a way to erase game data on this game? I recently bought it on eBay, but there's saved data that I can seem to get rid of.
@TheBananaPhone1 more like an "On Rail Shooter" to me =/
I don't know something like that minigame back on Banjoo-Tooie where everyone is getting a gun... bird... gunbird, while shooting eggs to the other players.

I had this for original Gameboy, asked for it for Christmas, never knew it existed.
This gameplay is identical to nes open golf on the nes. Check it out!! 3ds ambassador download

Finally a normal good old fashioned CGR review again
real men play all video game consuls at once and successfully, lmao. but one question, you might have answered before, but how do you get a picture of just what your doing on your portable device? in this case, your Gameboy SP???
Like if you're getting this from Club Nintendo ;)
I was thinking of getting. Came here for a second opinion heh.
I've owned it since I was a kid
Sub if you're not an idiot and you play it on whatever platform you feel like.
Why would you select Ginger-rio when you could be Mario? You made me cry! =(
How much money is this game worth for the game boy advance sp?
REVIEW MARIO PARTY! Beats the hell out of MARIO TENNIS!
@TheGamerDutch and Truxton
What about minigolf? I like it.😃
The character looks like TJ.
Hey Mark, are you going to review the Vita?
