  • This video starts at the overlook for Upper Yosemite Falls. It gives a brief look at the top of the falls and the view of Yosemite Valley. It then follows the narrow staircase/trail up from the overlook to give the viewer an idea of how narrow this stretch is to get to the overlook.
    You can read more about my hike here and others on my blog: Wilderness Wanderings (www.wildernesswanderings.net)

    I just did this hike 3 weeks ago and let me tell you that there are no words to describe the feeling when you get to the top.
    It is a life experience that you won’t forget.

      I'm terrified of heights. Hiked this trail and froze just before the stairs.. took me a while to focus, but I did it. Still freak out looking at it now, but the falls make it worth it.

      That's nothing you should see the top of Half Dome best hike in Yosemite maybe the whole country.

    • @blackholeentry3489
      @blackholeentry3489 2 роки тому +1

      @@jeffreysmith4196 In the 60's and 70's I hiked the trail to the top of Half Dome a total of six times. The very first time, did the entire hike in one day with my younger brother, but decided that it was just too much for one day, so started spending the night in the valley above Nevada Fall. Our wives got tired of being left behind, so did join us for one hike....but then decided it was too much.
      One time, with a new pair of good shoes, I walked away from the face of Half Dome towards where it begins to slope, but, in reality, didn't go too far. I had previously chatted with a ranger who told me of one person who had a new pair of "special shoes'', given them the ultimate test, went too far, and they recovered his body the next day. I've always wondered what went through his mind as he slid and tumbled?
      Another time, the cables had not been elevated to waist high, but were laying on the rock. We climbed it anyway, picking the cables up as we progressed. Returning back down was a little trickier, just had to be careful.
      You know of the rock which sticks out from the top and is known as the ''Diving Board?"
      I have an 8 X10 photo of myself sitting on that rock with my legs dangling out over the edge with 5000' of air below me, hanging on my living room wall.
      Once, before highway 120 opened, my brother and I hiked up Tenaya Canyon and on to Tenaya Lake. We were the only ones in the campground, patches of snow were on the ground and for two full days, never saw another soul. The next day we hiked towards Half Dome, spent the night alongside the trail and the third day, climbed Half Dome and then hiked on down back to the valley and our car. .
      Now, I read David Paulides "Missing 411" with the largest cluster of missing people (people who walk in, don't walk out and are never seen again) is in Yosemite and kinda gives me the creeps. WHAT happens to all of these people? (Harvesting flir fields on a distant planet of an odd looking sun?)

    I wish everyone could have the opportunity to hike to the top of Yosemite falls, millions of us fortunate enough to be native Californians have hiked up there since we were young kids, never really appreciateing what we were doing or seeing until we became adults.

We weren't novices and even with our topos we couldn't figure out where the trail was and eventually we got pinned into a small space and decided to be more safe than sorry. It's not as bad as it looks - that railing is substantial, it won't move if you hang on. At worst you'd fall ten feet onto the wide ledge of the viewpoint. You'd probably get banged up, but most cases would still be able to hike down, although you'd be hurting and it wouldn't be much fun. The part of the trail above is actually scarier because the steps are so big, irregular, and hard to negotiate.

  • @aliensoup2420
    @aliensoup2420 7 років тому

    Pretty heavy water volume. I swam in the stream somewhere upstream from that view but far below the bridge, and the water flow was much less. There where calm pools maybe 100-200 feet above the fall. Great cool soak after a long hike and an amazing pool-side view.

      From Wikipedia:
      The Yosemite Creek watershed, which feeds the creek and Yosemite Falls, contains 43 square miles (110 km2). It is largely a granite basin that was scraped clean of soil by glaciers. Because of the shallow soil base, the Yosemite Creek watershed has little capacity to hold water, so it quickly drains as the snow melts.

      Two in our family are afraid of heights, but had no problem getting to this overlook or any other part of the trail. It looks worse than it is in photos/on video. There a big fall possible, but the railings are exceptionally sturdy and the part that seems narrow with the rail on the inside of the trail - you wouldn't do more than fall to the trail below should you slip or spazz out.
