32:17 In case anyone was wondering: An old-timey TV or computer monitor like that will hold an electrical charge within it for _days._ It's the very reason for that warning label on the back of TV sets. He's using that charge to set off the detonator pens he jammed into the C4.

One of the things that makes Hans such a smart villain is that he doesn’t tell his own henchmen the complete plan, only what they need to know and when they need to know it. He improvises on the go and gives clever instructions but only in the moment. Somehow they still trust him to go ahead with what would look like a dead-end heist to most criminals. It speaks to his charm and charisma that not once do they lose confidence in him despite John complicating his plan at almost every turn.

Another thing that highlights his intellect is that he very quickly guess what McClane is attempting to do. He's never far behind John and always close to catching him. It keeps you on the edge of your seat because you never assume that McClane is safe. He's always close to losing everything.

  • @haydenlindquist7006

One of the reasons McClane is such a great hero is he isn’t the typical hero. He’s not super chiseled, he shows fear, his plans don’t always work, he bleeds……a lot. He’s played more human than others

  • @bradleybowles7979
    @bradleybowles7979 11 місяців тому +41

    Great reaction as always!
What makes Die Hard a Christmas movie is the opening scene.
John McClane is coming to be with his family at Christmas and try to resolve any differences (and who else said that Christmas was about resolving differences..... Clark W Griswold in Christmas Vacation)!
Hans and the other terrorists are just a coincidence. They picked Christmas Eve to pull off the heist because they knew that there would be less people to deal with.
Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber steals the movie, his character is so entertaining and fun (even though he is a terrorist).
The effects in this movie are top notch, the pacing and writing are great and the acting is great too.
And the PlayStation sweater is totally fine as a Christmas sweater.
    Keep up the great reactions!

This, precisely. This is why it's a Christmas movie. It's not just that it's set at Christmas, it's because Christmas is the driving force, the reason the movie happens at all. it doesn't need Santa or really anything else "Christmassy" It's because the movie wouldn't have made sense at any other time of year, really.

That crunch bar grab in 30:26 was Al Leong's (actor and stuntman who shined in such gems as "Lethal Weapon", "Big Trouble in Little China" and "They Live!") improvisation which actually prolonged his character's life because the writer Steven de Souza said: “I was killing somebody every eight or 10 pages but that moment made him interesting. That far up in the air, it would be extremely unlikely to hear the gunfire.. Just like how Al couldn't hear the shots in the boardroom or Argyle couldn't hear them down in the parking garage.. Sound does travel, but there's only so far it can go..
--- The real building does have a center ventilation shaft as seen in the movie that goes from roof to basement.

11:31 this is his first movie. He was in Hollywood just a few days before taking this role. He almost didn’t take this role cause he wasn’t sure he wanted his first role to be a villain. 19:34 Alan Rickman reading the Ho-Ho-Ho off the sweatshirt is genius. 35:43 that wasn’t the coke he was asking for. They didn’t understand that he meant the drug. 40:02 the employees name was William (WM) Clay and that’s shortened to Bill Clay. 46:24 it is so a wholesome Christmas movie. Many families act like this during Christmas 😁. 51:41 Bruce improvised the Hi Honey when seeing Holly. The director told Alan Rickman that they’d drop him on 3 to help him cause he was afraid of heights. They dropped him 40’ onto an airbag on the count of one which gave them that terrified look on Hans face.

I haven’t seen this mentioned yet in the comments but I’m sure it might be there. Hans’ reaction to being dropped was actually Rickman’s genuine reaction. When they dropped him for that scene, the director said they’d do it on the count of three, but they dropped him early, intentionally. So his face was his genuine reaction in that moment.

FYI: 'that huge scar' on Mr. Willis's shoulder ( at 10:10 )is from his younger days: a shoulder fracture had to be operated. I'm guessing a titanium or surgical steel plate on the humerus, if not a shoulder replacement altogether. "Quigley Down Under" Just put it on your list if you haven't seen it yet. You'll love it. You'll really love it. It's an "adventure" movie (1990) with lots of heart, smart funny moments, and an amazing finish; and it even features Alan Rickman as a deliciously dastardly landowner in the outback of Australia in the wild west era. Tom Selleck plays Quigley, and Laura San Giacomo as the mercurially wacky Crazy Cora. Lots of memorable scripting & banter, and gorgeous cinematography of rugged Aussieland, too.
If you want something a little lighter in intent to perk up your day, check out Brendan Frasier starring in "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (2008). It's a fun adventure romp with playful characters and some touching moments, plus plenty of Brendan's classic "schtick" action-comedy.

I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED your reaction to this. At the very beginning I knew you could not have any idea of the ride that was in-store for you. I am so glad you perceived this film with the same awe and appreciation I did when it came out in theaters. This is what movies used to be like. Sure, there were some special effects with the explosions (and more, but that's another conversation), but the movie was not about the explosions, it was about the plan, the cunningness, the cleverness, the thought of so many details in THE STORY. This was typical back then, and its why movies were so popular and a regular part of everyone's lives to go to the theater to see them. Today's movies are about impressing us with special effects (or to promote some agenda), and the story seems to come in second....or third. GREAT reaction to this film. Absolutely enjoyed watching you loving this movie. Can't wait for the next one!

So... this movie was released as a summer blockbuster (July 1988), which is about as far removed from Christmas as is possible. Thus, for the first generation of people who experienced this movie, it falls in the mental slot of 'summer action blockbuster'. That, I think, is the central reason for there being any debate at all. If this had released as a holiday movie, it would be known as a Christmas classic by all, full stop.

Nice reaaction. Couple notes on the movie. When John is hanging by the gun in the elevator shaft, the stuntman who did that shot was supposed to grab that 1st handhold. He missed it and somehow managed to grab the next one. When Hans died at the end, Alan Rickman was scasred of heights and was really nervous. The drop was only about 12 or 15 feet. They told him they were going to let go on 3. Then told the stuntman to let go of Alan on 1. Big surprise to him, so that look of terror as he was falling was real! Oh and when he bumped into Hans and Hans gave a name. The index showed Clay, Wm. Wm is the abbreviation for William so Bill was correct. I would suggest that since you loved this you will love 2 & 3. Don't put it off. You got your like and sub. See you on the next one.
