Makes a good gift for a reader. I like it for a birthday gift. 12 charity shop books wrapped individually and labelled with months of the year. So a gift that lasts all year. Only needing 12 also makes it more affordable.
I think that you got a good deal here. The books look in excellent condition and the treats were not cheap ones. At roughly £4.50 a book you'd be hard pressed to find all of these in a charity shop The little library trinket is cute and the wrapping paper not your bog standard Poundland type. This seller has put a lot of work into sourcing , wrapping and packaging this book advent calendar, i will be buying one for myself if there are any left.
To me this would seem to be a great idea for a couple /group of book loving friends to do as an exchange. Especially if they have access to each other’s lists of books that are already read and know each other’s dietary preferences. You could set a budget and go to town. Perhaps a collaboration with another channel in future…..?
Love a book advent. I make my mum one every year. Try to buy as many as I can from charity shops or ebay to keep the price down though. My daughter handmade me a bookmark advent too. ❤
I think this would be a great think for a charity shop to do to raise extra money, and they probably have a ton of books coming in all the time. I’m quite choosy about what I read so would rather pick things out than have a mystery box but it’s nice having something to unwrap! Maybe something to do between friends/family. Do you ever buy books for people as gifts? You could do a gift guide type video (eg what to get your sister who loves romance or dad who likes a mystery etc)
I agree with you, the idea is so nice but personally for me, £55 is a little steep for me to spend on books that I don’t know I’ll like! Love the idea of it though and it was beautifully packaged and wrapped. Also agree re the M J Arlidge books! I love that they’re set in the area I grew up in so I can really visualise the locations 😂
Haha that’s where location makes a difference. For me, being Swiss, I feel like it’s a decent price. Especially including postage. But yes, if they’re all second hand, yeah it might be a lot. I wished they had added a pen, a book bag or more bookmarks (there are magnet and paper clip ones). Also, I would have included a nut free chocolate or biscuit, a gluten free and vegan one. Some variety, so everyone can eat something in the box.
Same, if someone wants to buy this for me, I’d love it! I also like the idea they’re all secondhand, I pretty much exclusively read secondhand books so I like that.
I got a book advent on Etsy from The Hidden Library that was £30 for 12 books all second hand but all pretty good condition and definitely more affordable :) I have seen some very expensive ones as well for about £80!
I really like this concept, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a book advent calendar before!! Love a good mystery/thriller book 😍 I would love to see a video once you’ve read these reviewing them all!
I'm an american that stumbled upon this video and I'm shocked by how cheap all the comments are saying they find books even second hand. Even in most thrift stores where I live books are 5 usd. According to my google currency converter each day is less than 3 usd and that's a steal to have a little joy everyday. 😭 Also I feel you on the "is it gay?" It would be a dream come true to have an advent of all queer romances 😍
I think you can get really cheap books at like thrift stores in America, but every time I've been in one, I've never found any books that I actually wanted to read. And if it's a big author, like Stephen King, it's typically a bit higher in price. Half Priced Books is the best option, at least where I live, for used books, but the prices for popular books are not as cheap as the books in this box.
where are you? I regularly find books for $1-3 USD at thrift stores here in the DMV. Our huge 2ndhand book warehouse in rockville is a little more, but there were still options under 5 depending on your genre.
@@taylorh8430 if your area has any library bookstores, those tend to be excellent. ours here in maryland is "friends of the library." highly recommend checking any similar shops out if you have access to them.
I looked at buying myself a book advent calendar this year but thought they were far too expensive for what you got. £55 for 13 used books seems far to much. So what I did is ask my wife to do it for me. 2 of our local charity shops do 5 books for £1! So not only was it far cheaper it was more personal. I could see charity shops being able to sell these as advent calendars themselves.
seeing all the book calendars on bookstagram and now in this video are making me want to get a book calendar for myself next year :p i have been influenced. also please do make a video talking about if you liked these books or not, i'm curious to know!

I like the calendar! The only thing is: Many of these are parts of a series. Did you get volumes 1 of everything or just a random book? Because I like to listen to (more than read) entire series chronologically). So I would only love the calendar if it was stand-alone novels. Or if it’s series, and it’s only first parts, I do love it! You could then choose which series to pursue and which not to. But for example the “Little Boy Blue” by M.J. Arlidge is part 5 of a series… I’ll check out the series, but will start with book 1! And I do like Mark Billingham! Don’t let the cover put you😮 off! ;-) 😊 Thanks for the video! You got a new subscriber (from Switzerland) and I saved lots of the books to my Goodreads list and audible wish list! 😂 Also: you could gift the books you don’t want to keep on to others or re-donate it.
We had the same book advent calendar, I was split 50/50 whether I was enjoying it or not. Some items were slightly underwhelming for me or some books were more loved than I was expecting as I knew they were pre loved but one had bad staining on but it was beautifully presented
I just found u, and omg the happiness I felt when u said you talk about gay books, Ive been trying to find more queer books and cant seem to find any that seem interesting, or its all usually the same 5 i hear abt. Nice idea but pricey as the books we’re second hand and the biscuits etc the cheaper end type you’d buy in Home Bargains, but then you are also paying for time, wrapping, novelty - I’d say 35.00 absolute maximum
I paid $60 + for 12 book advent calendar with no extras. I think it had been fun so far, but it wasn't what I expected. I went with Christmas books, but if I did it again I would do fantasy.
Just a tip, with the Ian Rankin book, if you haven’t read the previous Rebus books you might end up a bit lost, as the books have a running plot (multiple of them)
Since i can't see the listing since it's removed, i am wondering if you knew it was going to be a variety of books and candy etc? If i had ordered a book Advent box i would expect it to be 24 books not a bunch of candies (esp since you said you eat none of them!) Bookish things and books i would expect like a cute book tote, bookmark, maybe some stuff for annotating, a book journal etc if they aren't all going to be actual books, but if this was how you expected and you feel it was as advertised i think it's a decent deal at under 5 dollars a book, though the treats that came with them don't add up to much otherwise. As far as psychological thrillers go... I've read many of those authors and i've never considered most of them to be thrillers or psychological thrillers. They're more of law enforcement procedural and suspense... I really enjoy Jeffery Archers William Warwick series, but not sure how much enjoyment you will get if you start half way though as there's several recurring characters
Georgia I do not like chocolate either and I have always had to try and explain why to people 😂 I just don’t like it! There’s a couple of things I like, mint or peanut butter with chocolate. Can't help but think this was just someone's way of decluttering their collection, £55 seems a bit cheeky. At least you got some variety in terms of authors!
That's the problem, and what if you get a bunch of books you really aren't that interested in? And if you're making it as a gift for someone, it seems strange to do an advent calendar rather than just gifting a bunch of books because they are expensive when you put it all together.
@@craftyhobbit7623 I suppose it depends on the person, I know some folk like the mystery aspect of advent calenders. While I wouldn't get one myself, if I did I'd at least prefer more options instead of just one rando author.
I still think it is a really fun idea :) I would not buy it for 55 either but the wrapping will take quite a while so you also pay for that time and material and maybe shipping is also inclusive, so I don't think the price is completely crazy. And not gonna lie, if someone gifted me such a callender, I would be beyond happy, even if I didn't like every book

I think as a concept, you've got to be strict with including 1st book in a series only or standalones. Like my murder book is BOOk 18!!!! in the series of Tom Thorne series. Like yes, with a lot of these series, you don't have to read in order, but you get the full pie by doing so rather than half a pie. So I think that is kind of crappy. And I don't think it's fair on the reader who buys these. Like are you really going to read 17 books before finally picking this one up? So it just feels wasteful. Dead fall is also book 4 of a series. And Line Of Sight is also book 5 in a series. And obviously Little Boy Blue isn't the 1st in the Helen Grace series. So yeah, deffo wasteful and not giving readers value for money. I wouldn't be surprised if you had even more books that were a series in the pile that I didn't notice. The wrapping is on point though 👌 I would be annoyed that I couldn't just pick them up, read them and get the full experience. Because I'd feel like I'd atleast have to read the first couple of books of a series before picking up number 18 😅
I think you got a great deal James Patterson books aren't cheap so getting that one alone is already a good deal I did think the mints were a bit of a rubbish gift but considering you gave them to your pony who is adorable it wasn't that bad
this is what I found on google--- Peppermint oil, and essential oils in general, are toxic to cats because they lack the enzymes needed to metabolize certain compounds found in these oils. Inhalation of essential oils, even without direct contact, can lead to respiratory distress and other health issues in cats, especially when the scent is strong. Candy canes, boiled sweets, chews or gums contain more sugar than cats can metabolise. Cats are obligate carnivores. Although they can eat small amounts of carbohydrates, they can't break the substances down effectively to utilise the energy. Excess sugar (glucose) is discarded in their urine(2) While peppermint is not toxic to cats in small amounts, it can cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested in larger quantities. Symptoms might include vomiting or diarrhea. Moderation is Key: If your cats are just sniffing or occasionally nibbling on the leaves, it's likely not a serious issue

The wrapping is on point though 👌
I would be annoyed that I couldn't just pick them up, read them and get the full experience. Because I'd feel like I'd atleast have to read the first couple of books of a series before picking up number 18 😅
I think you might really like Dead Fall. Though it's the 3rd in the series. (Also it's a bit gay 😊)
James patterson is one of my favorite authors xx
😻😻😻
You say gay books, I subscribe 😂
I think you got a great deal James Patterson books aren't cheap so getting that one alone is already a good deal I did think the mints were a bit of a rubbish gift but considering you gave them to your pony who is adorable it wasn't that bad
In America we call that a horse... though queer woman rides pony does sound better
he’s a pony! it’s all to do with height: ponies are under 14.2hh and horses are over 😃
14:00 I get that same reaction when I tell people that I don't like cheese
I don't either
Earlyyy
this is what I found on google---
Peppermint oil, and essential oils in general, are toxic to cats because they lack the enzymes needed to metabolize certain compounds found in these oils.
Excess sugar (glucose) is discarded in their urine(2)
While peppermint is not toxic to cats in small amounts, it can cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested in larger quantities. Symptoms might include vomiting or diarrhea. Moderation is Key: If your cats are just sniffing or occasionally nibbling on the leaves, it's likely not a serious issue
Another chocolate disliked here! I seriously don't understand how it has such a chokehold on everyone 🫤
