      That will be the thing that causes me to switch from my clunky/huge/heavy GlideRight using PromptSmart Pro to the El Gato Prompter. I’d even save the subscription price for the PrompterSmart Pro app and constantly having to sign into my account. I’m looking forward to any reviews on this.

    I just got my pedal out and started using it with Prompter yesterday. I was trying to figure out how to get this exact setup and was stumped. Thanks for the tip! I do find I can use the Magic Trackpad for scrolling back and forward, but it's visible and the pedal is a better solution if you can get used to it.

    I don't have the Elgato as I had purchased a larger prompter about a year before it came out.
    My favorite uses for any prompter are 1. for screen presentations. Im looking at the screen and the camera at the same time. 2nd. Looking at chat during a live stream.
    In both cases it creates a better vibe than looking away from the camera to look at the screen. To the viewers it feels like you are talking TO them rather than AT them.
    Normally I don't use scripts, just a list of bullet points to jog my memory. Again it creates a more natural feel of talking to the viewers rather than at them.

    I don’t normally use scripts in my videos, but I pick this up for when I do sponsored inserts. So it wasn’t supposed to be an every day tool for me, but then I found out that I could broadcast the screen from OBS directly onto the Teleprompter it was a game changer. I do a lot of product reviews and I can now be looking directly at the screen reading the details I’m talking about it and I don’t have to look weird staring off to my left or my right. I also use it for zoom calls. I’ve had a bunch of people ask me how I managed to have the camera directly in front of my monitor like that and still see what’s going on. 😅

  • @arlo.guthrie
    @arlo.guthrie Місяць тому +1

    I bought the prompter / foot pedal for the same reason as you. The prompter is great. Really pleased. The pedal is awful for a teleprompter control! It makes too much noise when you press it, particularly the centre one. Any suggestions? Thinking either I will have to use it barefoot so I can feel it better and perhaps press it lighter, or wrap it and my foot in a towel, or dismantle it and try and put some deadening material inside the unit itself. Previously I used bluetooth page turner foot pedals, which are lightly sprung with no clunk at all.
    PS just tried the voice control, not expecting much because it has been panned elsewhere, but in short test with a good mic close to mouth, it worked surprisingly well. Arguably better than footpedal. So far, anyway.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Місяць тому +1

      You can swap out the springs in the pedal to make it a little less tough to press, but I guess I've just learned to have a light touch 😁
      There are times when I stomp the pedal too hard while talking though and you can definitely hear it on camera, so Voice Control has been a welcome update for sure.

    • @arlo.guthrie
      @arlo.guthrie Місяць тому

      @@tombuck Hadn't noticed the springs, thank you. Putting in the HARDER springs makes it easier to depress the pedal without the clack of it hitting the stop. Not ideal, but much better. And I am glad to have got that working a bit better because Voice Control has stalled today - hangs on 'getting ready' which I suspect is a fault on Elgato's server (presumably the voice analysis is done remotely on elgato's server)

  • @45KevinR
    @45KevinR 4 місяці тому +1

    The elgato stuff really seems to be well thought out and interworks well. I wish it was more affordable though.
    Question: To Tom and other prompter users - Do you script word by word, like a tv news reader, or do you just list talking points like people often do for presentations? I'd be interested to hear more about peoples' work flows and creative process. This seems especially interesting when Tom is capable of riffing in real time so well...!?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 місяці тому

      I usually use bullet points to stay on track.
      Sometimes I'll create what looks like a word-for-word script (you can sort of see it in a few examples here), but even then I still usually just read it more as bullet points. Sometimes writing the whole thing out helps my brain process the thoughts better, especially if it's a more technical topic.

I have all 4 items connected to a non-powered hub. What are your thoughts there?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  12 днів тому

      I think the non-powered hub is definitely an issue. The prompter especially needs a ton of power and bandwidth so it either needs to be connected to a computer directly or to a powered hub. The Stream Deck and Pedal are usually a bit more forgiving though and should work with less powerful hubs and adapters.

    0:01 I know that you love your puns, and I had wanted to ask a favor about that?
    I have auditory processing disorder, which is a hearing-related disorder in which my hearing organs-like my ear drum and the like-all work fine but my brain sometimes has trouble translating sounds into words. And it so happens that when you’re shooting from the hip with language athleticism in the vein of “Suzy sells sea shells at the sea shore,” that kinda makes it harder for me to understand what you’re saying?
    I don’t say this lightly because I know how much puns are as part of your identity, but might you be open to reining in the puns by a little bit? Or it might even help if maybe you were to keep it to, like, one pun or so per episode, as a treat? If you might be up to that, that would really mean a lot.

      Hey Ashley!
      Thank you so much for sharing this with me, I totally get where you're coming from and appreciate you letting me know about your auditory processing disorder and how it affects your experience with my content. It means a lot to me that you care enough to reach out!
      I understand how wordplay and puns can sometimes make it harder to follow along, and I truly empathize with your situation. The flip side to this is for better or worse, this really is just how my brain works. It's not something that I try to do- it's how I've interacted with language for my entire life and at this point it's a pretty big part of who I am.
      That being said, I definitely don't want anything to be distracting or become a barrier to understanding. Believe it or not I DO try and edit for clarity, but again, my brain just is what it is (and you should see what DOES get cut out😅 ).

      All the same, when I confided in having a disability and when I asked if you might be able to help to accommodate that disability, and when you basically said that you can’t change even a little… that kinda hurt.
      I know in my heart that you care about people with disabilities, and I have no doubt that if one of your students were to confide to you about a physical disability that they had, I know that you would do your best to accommodate them.
      Anyway. I’ll just leave this video clip of a simulation of what it’s like to have auditory processing disorder. It’s not a fun time.

      Definitely not my intention to hurt you in any way, and I absolutely care about people with disabilities and different needs, so please accept my apology.
      It IS something I will keep in mind and make accommodations for when possible, but one of the biggest things for me when it comes to UA-cam is that it's a platform that has allowed me to be myself for the first time ever, and to feel accepted as myself for the first time ever, which is probably more than you need to know, but is a crucial part in making this something I love to do and continue to do for a long time. So hopefully there's a happy medium that can be found!

    sound quality strange weird, too boomy and muddy, exaggerated on the base. And listening to audio with too much base for a long time can be fatiguing
    However, I checked previous chapter - "Shure MV7 Plus: Everything The Original Should Have Been" it was not too boomy and you used the same microphone. The chapters you recorded with the Sennheiser MKH50 were ok not too boomy either

      Yeah, I'm not sure what it's a bit boomier than other times. Some sort of user error, to be sure 😁

    - Step 1: Money, lots and lots of it
    - Steps 2: Follow the instructions in this video

      The Elgato Prompter is the least expensive prompter with a built in display ever made.

    I have just received your brand-new prompter. I am a Mac user, and everything on the prompter appears inverted. How can I fix this? it is not readable - To resolve the issue, I have already attempted the following steps:
    Updating DisplayLink drivers.
    Closing and reopening the Camera Hub software multiple times.
    Restarting my Mac several times.
    Unfortunately, none of these actions have resolved the problem.

      Hmm, I've never heard of this happening. The prompter's actually display SHOULD be inverted, but on the glass/mirror it should look normal.
