Probably too many to be able to pick just 10; the vast majority of recipients seem to just reel off the names of all the people they're grateful to (don't forget the producers or your agent!) and telling their partner, kids and parents that they love them. Yawn. Don't bore us with that, tell us how you feel!
Definitely underrated is Russell Crowe's speech for Gladiator. He managed to do the "usual" parts of thanking parents and agents with eloquent and fresh phrasing, and ended it with poetic encouragement: "You know, when you grow up in the suburbs of Sydney or Auckland, or Newcastle like Ridley or Jamie Bell, or the suburbs of anywhere, you know, a dream like this seems kind of vaguely ludicrous and completely unattainable. But this moment is directly connected to those childhood imagining[s]. And for anybody who's on the down side of advantage and relying purely on courage, it's possible."
It was so funny -- I think he didn't expect to win Best Picture, so this was his moment. Then, when the final award came, it felt like a "second moment."
Christopher Plummer in BEGINNERS is far and away the best Oscar speech I ever heard. Every winner these days now acknowledges the other nominees and it usually comes off phony. "Kenneth, Nick, Jonah and dear Max, it is an honor gentlemen to be among you." Just gorgeous.
My favorites are Jodie Foster for “The Accused “ when she said “ Cruelty might be very human and very cultural but it is NOT acceptable, which is what this movie was about “ Other favorites are Mira Sorvino when she made her dad bawl his eyes out. Hilary Swank for “Boys Don’t Cry” had a good one that’s aged very well when she talks about accepting and celebrating diversity. Frances McDormand for “Fargo “ was so well written and delivered that she made the audience smile with pride.
I think my two favs ever are Mira Sorvino’s speech and mentioning her dad, and Kate Winslet, when she asks her dad to whistle. Honorable mentions to Anna Paquin for getting herself together enough to say a few words, and Meryl Streep for SC, where she gives kudos to Kevin and Peter in the loveliest way.
I didn't entirely agree with the win but I thought Michael Caine's Oscar speech for The Cider House Rules was one of the best speeches ever. Plus Bob Hope getting his honorary Oscar was great mainly because he always said he relied on que cards and his writers yet he didn't have anything ready and was able to give a great speech.
I loved Olivia Colman's speech too. She's so adorable! I also loved the humility in Bong Joon Ho's speech. I thought it was cool how he acknowledged everyone he was nominated with.
If we talk about iconic oscar speeches, there needs to be a slot for Jorge Drexler when he won best original song for "Al otro lado del rio" (the son from Motorcycle Diaries). It's still to this day the only Spanish language song to ever win a best song oscar and since he was unknown to the world the organizers of the show wouldn't let him perform his song and had Antonio Banderas sing it instead. When Jorge won, instead of giving a speech, he just sang a verse of the song a capella with his incredibly sweet voice. I might be biased because I'm also uruguayan but it's unforgettable to me, we all expected him to name the country or some famous uruguayan people, maybe some members of his family (I was in college with his brother) but nope, he just sang LOL.
Here are my top 10, in alphabetical order: - Adrien Brody - Anna Paquin - Frances McDormand ("TBOEM") - Halle Berry - Hattie McDaniel - Jared Leto - Lupita Nyong'o - Patricia Arquette - Tom Hanks ("Philadelphia") - Troy Kotsur
Hattie McDaniel's speech is truly moving. My throat catches, no matter how many times I've heard it. What a shame her actual award has been lost. What an even deeper shame her life and career were cut short.
Wait a min, I can't believe you didn't mention Bong thanking Tarantino for including his films in his yearly top list. This is how I discovered Bong Joon and Korean Cinema. When he said that I was so moved, it brought me to tears. 🎬❤
Personally I loved Denzel's speech for Training Day. It was a class act all around and that moment where he and Sidney Poitier held their trophies up to another was so iconic!
You should definitely do a part 2. I would 100% pick Adrien Brody’s one from 2004. He does some humour and also talks about some really serious and controversial issues even within how the movie was created. I know there are issues with its availability on UA-cam due to his unscripted kiss with Halle Berry and his last paragraph about Iraq as it was a really recent thing but it is just such an outpouring of happiness, gratitude and emotion that always makes me return to it. He also won it for one of the best movie performances of the century, maybe of all time in my opinion full stop, which is insane considering he is still the youngest actor to win Best Actor at 29. It is insane that he hasn’t been bigger since tbh.
No Ruth Gordon for Rosemarys Baby? One of the best and funniest Oscar speeches of all time. Plus Meryl Streeps speech for the Iron Lady and Michael Caines for the Cider House Rules. Oh and Maureen Stapletons speech for Reds.
One of my favorite speeches comes from a less talked about category. An Irish Goodbye’s win in Best Short Film got a quick thank you speech in before they stopped to take the rest of their time to sing Happy Birthday to their actor James Martin. So incredibly sweet and humbling to have half of Hollywood suddenly be singing Happy Birthday to you let alone on one of the Worlds biggest stages!
Reminds of when ‘Once’ won best original song and the woman who co-wrote didn’t get to talk and Jon Stewart made sure she got a chance. Those are great moments
Tom Hanks' acceptance speech for Philadelphia is my favorite Oscar speech ever. It truly is heartfelt and just so raw. It gives me hope for a better tomorrow...as hokey as that sounds. 💖
Great list, but it definitely skews pretty modern, even taking into account the fact that not many 1930s or 1940s speeches are available. Three of my favorites that I think should have definitely made the list are: Rita Moreno, Sidney Poitier, and Ruth Gordon :)
Excellent video! Bong Joon-Ho's speech is one of my most rewatched. He is so sincere in his graciousness, I find it really lovely. I'm with you on Olivia. Her speech is so charming that watching it instantly puts me in a good mood.
I’ve got a few Eva Marie Saint “I’m gonna have the baby right here” Adrien Brody both his winning speech and his presentation the next year with the Binaca. Priceless. I know he’s still cancelled, but Kevin Spacey thanking his mom for driving him to acting class during his acceptance speech for ‘The Usual Suspects’ is lovely. Clark Gable thanking Frank Capra and Claudette Colbert is sweet and gracious. Paul Williams thanking ‘all the little people’ for best song…. There are so many esp. from years past (ie before the 2000’s) that really deserve a look
No force in heaven or on earth will convince me that Cuba Gooding Jr. gave a better performance than William H Macy in Fargo, or Edward Norton in Primal Fear. This is one thing that PISSES me off about the Academy; this was a reward for a hip actor in a very hip and of-the-moment movie and the award was mostly for one scene of hip sort-of-funny dialogue that became the phrase of the moment.
Great list, I love all of these speeches, especially Colman's and Bong's. But Michael Caine's speech when he won for "The Cider House Rules" is just phenomenal. I watch it over and over. Definitely an all-timer speech.
Some great choices here. Esp Olivia 🥰 Is there any chance of doing an 'Irish invasion of the Oscars' type video? There have been a lot of Irish actors making a big impact lately, especially now with Cillian winning
Not sure if it's entirety is my favourite (haven't watched in a while), but DDL winning for Lincoln and joking about how him and Meryl Streep were going to play each other's roles (Meryl as Lincoln, DDL as Thatcher) always makes me laugh. Also Ke Huy Kwan winning speech is so beautiful
The two I go back to more than any other are Ke Huy Quan for Best Supporting Actor and Brendan Fraser for Best Actor. Not only are they great and genuine speeches, they both touched me deeply since I grew up watching Indiana Jones and Looney Tunes: Back in Action.
Definitely my favourite is Joe Pesci, really appreciate the sheer lack of ego & pretension. After that, it would probably be Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer, he kept it short, sweet & humble.
Joe was terrific. I adored Cillian's speech, so honest and heartfelt. His performance carried "Oppenheimer" and I had been rooting for him to win all awards season. It was really gratifying when it came.
There was the cringe part where he kissed Halle Berry but personally, I’ve always loved Adrian Brody speech and the warm congratulations the audience gave him on his brilliant performance
Bong Joon Ho giving a shout out to the four 4️⃣ directors who didn’t win was extremely heartwarming because I love 💗 when award winners celebrate their peers. Olivia Colman’s speech 🎤 was special because I wanted her to win so much and it was incredible that she won for a comedy movie 🎥.
To me, the best Oscar speech of all time is by Gerda Weissmann Klein, subject of Best Documentary Short Subject winner "One Survivor Remembers". Her speech is so raw, humbling and heartwarming, all at once, it leaves you a changed person.
I just realized how well The Awards Contender speaks. He speaks slowly with perfect pronunciation. Thank you, Brian. Edit: Juliette Binoche as well at 2:00
No Life is Beautiful? For Cuba's enthusiastic win but not this one? Aa tiny Italian man climbing on seats, screaming in Italian, hugging everybody on the way up? I laughed so hard that night I cried which is fitting since I cried from beginning to end in that movie.
Such a great video! Now I want to re-watch, write them all down so I don't miss anything, and look them up on UA-cam. My all time favorite speech was Joaquin Phoenix. He's one of my favorite actors and, as a fellow vegan, he spoke to my heart ❤
I can’t think of a better speech than that of Justin Lance Black when he won the Best Screenwriter award. Truly heartfelt. The speech from Sean Penn that year was equally moving.
I have to say, Tom Hanks' speech for "Philadelphia" is my all time favorite too. Good call. It's eloquent, honest, empathetic and beautifully delivered. It's the model on how you talk about a film about a social issue without grandstanding.
I feel like just adding in Walter Matthau's short Oscar speech, purely just because of him poking fun of the fact he fell of his bicycle a few days before he won, and got a few laughs out of it.
IMO, Marlee Maitland’s win for Children of a Lesser God, or Troy Kotsur’s win for Coda would have better captured memorable wins from the deaf community. As they say: Representation matters!!🤟🏽
Ellen Burstyn should have won for Requiem For A Dream. I love Louise Fletcher, Kathy Bates, Halle Berry, and Charlize Theron's speeches...... also how stunning is Ann Margret at 4:17? Edward Norton should have won over Cuba Gooding Jr. WOW. Now I am crying. I think Tom Hanks mentioned the high school drama teacher that inspired him who passed away from AIDS in his speech. I apologize if I am incorrect.
I find Dustin Hoffman's speech quite pretentious. Hattie McDaniel's win was a milestone - but she wasn't even allowed to say what she wanted. Her speech was reportedly written by the studio and it's so cringy when they made her say she "hopes she'll always be a credit to her race". I agree on the rest of the list, specially Olivia Coleman.
Didn't Hoffman promise to give his Oscar to SAG so the union could display it in their office as encouragement for struggling and out-of-work actors? That never happened! Fortunately, he sounded like a less of a prick when he accepted his second Oscar for "Rain Man."
Good choices. My all time number one is Shirley MacLaine's epic speech for winning for the "Terms of Endearment". And she got her Oscar from Rock Hudson and Liza Minelli. Talk about a gay über bingo! 😉
One of my favorites, certainly from recent years, is Jamie Lee Curtis. The fact that she gave shout-outs to all the people who helped her in her career when she did films that the academy usually overlooked by saying "We just won an Oscar" several times is awesome. She only ever said "I just won an Oscar" when she was talking directly to her late parents. In fact, all the acting Oscars from that year were pretty good. Brendon Frasier, Key Huy Kwan, and Michelle Yeoh also had memorable speeches.
Great list! Ruth Gordon has another speech that I really enjoy. Especially if you know her story as an actress. It’s relatively short and simple but still funny and well deserved.
Dustin Hoffman's speech for _Kramer vs. Kramer_ is definitely my favorite of all time. I also loved Jon Voight restraining his emotions while giving one of the most humble acceptance speeches for his win for _Coming Home._ Also, it's not Oscar but I adore Mahershala Ali's SAG speech for _Moonlight._
I was all set to mention Julie Andrews acceptance speech winning for Mary Poppins, where she said " Finally my thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie and who made all this possible in the first place, Mr. Jack Warner!" Warner had refused to cast her in My Fair Lady which she did on Broadway, which freed her up to make Poppins for Disney. Warner was sitting in the audience and he laughed so hard he wiped away tears. But actually she made that speech at the Golden Globes, which she also won, not the oscars. Its still my favorite awards speech.
David Niven's reaction to his win was sweet and given his consummate raconteurism his one sentence got across how much it meant to him more than the usual spiel would have done.
It would be better ,iA) If their speeches are written in the screen ,so that their speeches can be understood with sprit & B) If some scenes of the movie are shown in the background, for the works they are being selected as oscar awadee .
For me, my #1 is Ke Huy Quan - the genuineness of his speech had me in tears!
I thought of that speech, such an emotional and sweet speech
Can you do the opposite now. Doing the 10 worse Oscar speeches.
I second this
JLaw needs to be there. 😁
Yes please 🙏.
+1 🙏
Probably too many to be able to pick just 10; the vast majority of recipients seem to just reel off the names of all the people they're grateful to (don't forget the producers or your agent!) and telling their partner, kids and parents that they love them. But this moment is directly connected to those childhood imagining[s]. And for anybody who's on the down side of advantage and relying purely on courage, it's possible."
For me, as an Asian guy, Bong Joon-Ho’s speech during his victory in Best Directing is my #1 all-timer, and then Michelle Yeoh’s is my 2nd. 🙏🏻❤️💯
Yes lovely speech.
Never get tired to watch Olivia Colman's Oscar speeches. So funny, so original!
No Russell Crowe - when he talks about childhood dreams and being able to pursue them…you could hear a pin drop in the auditorium. It was mesmerising.
Good one. Yes it’s a classic.
My favorites are Jodie Foster for “The Accused “ when she said
“ Cruelty might be very human and very cultural but it is NOT acceptable, which is what this movie was about “
Other favorites are Mira Sorvino when she made her dad bawl his eyes out. Hilary Swank for “Boys Don’t Cry” had a good one that’s aged very well when she talks about accepting and celebrating diversity. Frances McDormand for “Fargo “ was so well written and delivered that she made the audience smile with pride.
Lupita nyongo's is one of the best
One of the more recent, very heartfelt speeches.
Lupita's speech was HEARTFELT, but it sounded REHEARSED .
One of my favorites
Berry’s speech had gravitas. It ignited my lifelong interest in awards. Haters be damned.
Bong Joon-Ho....one of the classiest Oscar speeches EVER!!
Caine was one of the most gracious winners when acknowledging each of his fellow nominees.
Great speech, undeserved win
I loved Olivia Colman's speech too. She's so adorable! I also loved the humility in Bong Joon Ho's speech. I thought it was cool how he acknowledged everyone he was nominated with.
If we talk about iconic oscar speeches, there needs to be a slot for Jorge Drexler when he won best original song for "Al otro lado del rio" (the son from Motorcycle Diaries). Viola Davis when she won for Fences
One of my favorites. We'll deserved win.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s was so heartfelt . I don’t think she ever got blasé about winning.
Yes! She belongs on this list. I'd bump Hanks off this list, his speech was so full of virtual signalling that it was cringey.
Ke Huy Quan was one that had me crying happy tears
Rita Moreno’s speech was a good one. Surprised it’s not included
Yes! Very brief and to the point.
I love Anna Paquin’s speech when she won for “The Piano” in 1994! She was so adorable!
Even though my heart breaks each time I think of the Colman win over Close, I will agree that was one of the best Speeches!
You're not alone...on both counts!
Here are my top 10, in alphabetical order:
- Adrien Brody
- Anna Paquin
- Frances McDormand ("TBOEM")
- Halle Berry
- Hattie McDaniel
- Jared Leto
- Lupita Nyong'o
- Patricia Arquette
- Tom Hanks ("Philadelphia")
- Troy Kotsur
For me it has to be Peter O'Toole's Honorary Oscar speech. It is always my go to on youtube. I never get tired of it.
Ms. Shirley MacLaine’s speech has everything. What a talent!
I always thought
That when Sally Field won her second Oscar
It was the most honest
Acceptance Speech
Ever Awesome
Hattie McDaniel's speech is truly moving. My throat catches, no matter how many times I've heard it. What a shame her actual award has been lost. What an even deeper shame her life and career were cut short.
Parasite winning everything is such an incredible moment. BJH looking more gobsmacked with every subsequent win ❤
It was incredible
😁
It was so wonderful. I'm with Bryan - "Parasite" was my absolute favorite movie in 2019 but I was surprised and delighted to watch it clean up.
Wait a min, I can't believe you didn't mention Bong thanking Tarantino for including his films in his yearly top list. This is how I discovered Bong Joon and Korean Cinema. When he said that I was so moved, it brought me to tears. 🎬❤

My personal favorite is Viola Davis. She makes me cry with her speech.
Also Rita Moreno’s is iconic.
I think I read that the producers of GWTW wrote a speech for Hattie McDaniels but she obviously didn't use it. Great list!
No Ruth Gordon for Rosemarys Baby? One of the best and funniest Oscar speeches of all time. Plus Meryl Streeps speech for the Iron Lady and Michael Caines for the Cider House Rules. Oh and Maureen Stapletons speech for Reds.
Gordon's speech was very witty!
One of my favorite speeches comes from a less talked about category. An Irish Goodbye’s win in Best Short Film got a quick thank you speech in before they stopped to take the rest of their time to sing Happy Birthday to their actor James Martin. Reminds of when ‘Once’ won best original song and the woman who co-wrote didn’t get to talk and Jon Stewart made sure she got a chance. Those are great moments
My favourite goes to Anna Paquin who won Best Supporting Actress. She was totally ecstatic and speechless, and she was also cute as a button.
That's one of my favorites too
Tom Hanks' acceptance speech for Philadelphia is my favorite Oscar speech ever.
Yes! There were some really emotional and funny speeches in the earlier years (Gordon is a prime example).
Excellent video! Bong Joon-Ho's speech is one of my most rewatched. He is so sincere in his graciousness, I find it really lovely. I'm with you on Olivia. Her speech is so charming that watching it instantly puts me in a good mood.
Olivia Colman’s speech is my absolute favourite. I watch it from time to time to cheer me up 😊
I’ve got a few
Eva Marie Saint “I’m gonna have the baby right here”
Adrien Brody both his winning speech and his presentation the next year with the Binaca.
Those were definitely better performances.
Cuba Gooding, Jr. did in fact deserve the Oscar for Jerry Maguire, you obviously are not a fan of that movie.
william h macy in the supporting category is an absolute joke
@@merveben4753agreed it is category fraud, he was lead. But since he was in supporting he should have won regardless.
A great speech you omitted Brian, was Frances McDormand from 2018 for "Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri"
2018 and it was extraordinary
Maybe it’s just me, but I think that speech and McDormand’s delivery of the speech was a bit cringeworthy…😅
@@t221000 That it was. I dont think it would have been as noticable in years before. But are in a post me-too world so it came at just the right time
@@LouiseAndersen1991 That was a fantastic Oscars ceremony because of the Me Too culture
Great list, I love all of these speeches, especially Colman's and Bong's. But Michael Caine's speech when he won for "The Cider House Rules" is just phenomenal. I watch it over and over. Definitely an all-timer speech.
Some great choices here. Esp Olivia 🥰
Is there any chance of doing an 'Irish invasion of the Oscars' type video? There have been a lot of Irish actors making a big impact lately, especially now with Cillian winning
Not sure if it's entirety is my favourite (haven't watched in a while), but DDL winning for Lincoln and joking about how him and Meryl Streep were going to play each other's roles (Meryl as Lincoln, DDL as Thatcher) always makes me laugh.
Also Ke Huy Kwan winning speech is so beautiful
Ke's speech is one of my all-time favorites. ❤
The two I go back to more than any other are Ke Huy Quan for Best Supporting Actor and Brendan Fraser for Best Actor. Not only are they great and genuine speeches, they both touched me deeply since I grew up watching Indiana Jones and Looney Tunes: Back in Action.
Hattie McDaniel's speech was clearly filmed separelty from when she actually won
I really loved Cate Blanchetts speech for Blue Jasmine. Pure class
Great picks! Fun list, nice spread of people and eras
Russel Crowe is a really good one, and he also mentions my city of Newcastle as well
Halle Berrys speech is probably the one I go to for a good cry. Great video!
Jonathan Glazer’s speech for The Zone of Interest
I’m surprised you didn’t include Matt Damon & Ben Affleck’s screenwriting win but overall a good list imo
I go back to listen to Lupita Nyango's heartfelt and humble acceptance all the time. She is like a bright star in the dark heavens
Hattie McDaniel
Brilliant actress
So deserving of this
God Bless Her
love director bong' s speech. honoring everyone
Ruth Gordon's acceptance speech was absolutely charming
I just realized how well The Awards Contender speaks. He speaks slowly with perfect pronunciation. Thank you, Brian.
Edit: Juliette Binoche as well at 2:00
I thought for sure Shirley Maclaine's speech for Terms of Endearment would have at least got a mention
No Life is Beautiful? For Cuba's enthusiastic win but not this one? Aa tiny Italian man climbing on seats, screaming in Italian, hugging everybody on the way up? I laughed so hard that night I cried which is fitting since I cried from beginning to end in that movie.
Brian has mentioned that win in one of his videos saying he was not a fan of every aspect of it, including the accepting hysteria
Hattie McDaniel’s speech was so moving - Olivia Coleman’s is hilarious! 😁
Where is Matthew McConaughey’s speech? That was an incredible speech that was really well spoken.
Thank you sweetheart.❤ I love your channel.😊❤🎉
I love In & Out, such a hilarious and underrated movie! When I found out it was inspired by that speech I was shook.
Recency bias but I thought Emma Stone’s speech from this most recent year was wonderful
Louise Fletcher's speech makes me cry every single time! ❤
Jamie Lee Curtis is definitely up there for me
I have to say, Tom Hanks' speech for "Philadelphia" is my all time favorite too. Good call. It's eloquent, honest, empathetic and beautifully delivered. It's the model on how you talk about a film about a social issue without grandstanding.
Where is Viola Davis??? Cmon, that was stunning speech and one of the best!
It was our privilege, thanks Brian!
Great list, but I was surprised to see Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Yu left off. I hear people quote those speeches all the time.

Disagree with you on Hattie McDaniel, but to each their own.
😮
Frances McDermond"s 3 Ebbings Billboards speech is one of my favorites
Can you do one with the technical categories?
Great list!
Ruth Gordon has another speech that I really enjoy. Especially if you know her story as an actress. It’s relatively short and simple but still funny and well deserved.
My favorite is Adrien Brody's speech as best actor for The Pianist.
My favourite is still Cuba Gooding Jr.'s. The guy ended up speaking with the music and the music made his speech sound even better.
I know this one was quite recent but no speech has stuck with me more then Guillermo del Toro's speech for Pinocchio
The best ever for me always would be Shirley Maclaine's speech
My favorite Oscar speech is probably Forrest Whitaker followed closely by Michelle Yeoh followed by Heath Ledger's family.
Omg what a great video idea!
There are so many wonderful speeches in Oscar history!
David Niven's reaction to his win was sweet and given his consummate raconteurism his one sentence got across how much it meant to him more than the usual spiel would have done.
Hey, can you make an Adam Sandler Elusive Oscar video and why he has never been nominated?
Please do another actor race. Those are my favorites.
Emma Thompson's both Oscar winning speeches were funny and classy.
It would be better ,iA) If their speeches are written in the screen ,so that their speeches can be understood with sprit & B) If some scenes of the movie are shown in the background, for the works they are being selected as oscar awadee .
No one in movie history deserved an Oscar more than Halle Berry in Monster's Ball.
