How powerful is M2 Bradley?

  • In fact, the Bradley already has a track record of winning shootouts with full-sized Russian tanks. Production for the Bradley began in 1981, when it replaced the M113 armored personnel carrier, greatly exceeding the M113’s speed and power. The Bradley has been a staple of the Army’s armored troop-carrying capability since its introduction to the battlefield during Operation Desert Storm, losing only 3 of the 2,200 that were deployed.

Not to give too much away, (OPSEC) but the M240c can be accurately operated like a pin point accurate sniper rifle with a burst rate of 6-10 rounds per second in the day or night. It doesn't have the armor for tank hunting, if that were not a consideration there would be no need for MBTs at all. If the Bradley is a mile away from Russian armor its more vulnerable than its opponent. You seem to imagine the Russians are just going to sit there and see if the Bradley is all its cracked up to be. A WW2 era 17 pounder mounted on a clown car could probably take down a T72, provided the T72 sits there and lets him.
The fact is the Bradley's record is predicated upon extremely favorable battlefield conditions. That's not to say its a paper Tiger, but the fact it had no problem taking out Iraqi T72s with the full might of the US military to protect it and Apaches and F16 flying around above, is not the same thing as taking out a T72 in Ukraine conditions. I've always wondered about the process for upgrading the Bradley vs replacing.
Seems to me there ae a lot of "preferables" related to the Bradley's basic design.
The taller profile is vastly preferred for comfort of the crew and troops being transported.
The armament can always be upgraded easily to whatever one might want as long as it's not a really big gun. But a missile system is more than adequate for a shot or two. It just needs to retreat quickly after an encounter and get resupplied an can't stand toe to toe with an adversary's heavy armor for long.
Being tracked probably is not going away in favor of wheels.
The engine can be replaced with a hybrid electric like the proposed Abrams X, probably without much issue.
So, why replace the Bradley with a new design?

Military R&D is BIG business. Especially in the US. The government gives out highly lucrative contracts for companies to come up with new tech. Most of the time, though, exactly what you're talking about happens: they just upgrade the existing platforms with better arments and sensor packages. It's why things like the F22, while exceptional as it is (in theory), F-15 and F18 aren't going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, the Hornets just got upgrade packages not long ago to Super Hornets with more powerful engines and sensor tech. The B52 is another good example. It was supposed to be replaced by the B1 and B2 bombers long ago. But they built a fraction of the B1 and B2 that was initially claimed and their programs were extremely expensive and suffered massive budget overruns. Meanwhile, the B52s from the Cold War got engine upgrades and are still more than capable of raining a very bad day down on any enemy anywhere in the world.
Dont get me wrong, some of the new things that have been developed over the years are really good and really cool...it's just extremely expensive for the taxpayers when you could get more "bang for your buck" improving existing weapons platforms.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Military Industrial Complex. Selling you crap you don't need for only 500 million, 2bn overruns not withstanding. Why upgrade old tech when you can buy brand new. For a limited time only I can sell you 3 for the cost of 2 on a minimum of 5000 units or more. Seriously though the Bradley had more than 2 tow missiles and additional 25mm and 7.62 stores on board.

@Dwane Anderson yes. But look up recent developments Bofors-Raufoss 40mm and 57mm multi task munitions.
Air burst 40mm is no joke. Nor is 40mm exploding shell in the very middle of a buildings room. There is also a variant they rarely discuss that sheds three or four submunitions in a long chain of dispersment. Only a larger bore diameter allows this experimentation of modern munitions.

The Bradley is a tank killer because it comes with this thing called infantry
If it can dismount its infantry with anti-tank weapons prior to the battle the tank can find itself fighting up to 7 opponents from multiple attack vectors
I wouldn't want to be in a Bradley if it takes a direct hit from a tank round, the armor isn't nearly as thick as a tanks
But that is also why it will run circles around most tanks, with a speed that is almost twice that of most tanks

The NATO doctrine for fighting Russia calls for the breakthrough of Russian lines in localized areas, using armored vehicles like the Bradley and Leopard 2 to smash through the opening and get around behind the frontlines, causing chaos. Precision artillery also targets key positions and command centers, causing confusion and chaos behind enemy lines. Best case scenario for Russia, they recognize they are being overrun, and retreat in time. Worst case, they're untrained conscripts completely panic and break down, accidentally shooting allies and abandoning equipment en masse. Large encirclements, complete collapse. With any luck, something big will be coming soon!!!

But you don't mention whether the canon upgrade will be made available to the Ukrainians, nor do you mention what type of Bradley's we are sending to Ukraine. I like to know how hard it would have been to send Ukraine 500 Bradleys (out of our mothballed stock of 4,000) instead of the measely 50 we sent. I don't get goosebumps just looking at undeployed military gadgets. Increasing the caliber-size isn't always about putting out more power, but is also about simple delivery of payload: meaning, a bigger projectile can hold more explosives. The kinetic rounds -- the non-explosive ones -- may be much more powerful, only a little more powerful, or not much more powerful at all. I'm just saying that I think they want to put more explosive on target, and that's why the gun got bigger.
